DH’s penguin obsession

BettyWhittaker · 18/01/2026 17:39

DH is obsessed with penguins (the biscuits, not the birds) and always has been. He says every British household has a packet of penguins in - just as his grandparents did 30 years ago.
He’s particularly excited at the minute as they’re on offer in Asda for £1 a pack. He came in the other day with 3 packets, all different players - acting like he’d just closed in on the deal of the century.

Anyway, I know it sounds petty but it’s winding me up. Every evening around 8pm he stands up and says “penguin?” No I don’t want a fucking penguin, I never do and I’ve told him to stop asking me. Yes it sounds like a small thing but this is years of frustration. This morning his mother came around whilst he was out and once I made a coffee she said “no penguins in?” Ffs and they act like I’m the weird one!!!

Anyway next week we’re having a little party for DGD and DH wants a plate of penguins all arranged on a plate for the buffet. I think this is tacky as hell. He thinks I’m being a snob.

AIBU???

Bonus points for anyone who can tell me if every British household does indeed have at least one packet of penguins in.

Morrisons have them too for £1 a pack. Just learnt they are two bourbon biscuits with chocolate on which made them less tasty then found a pack of the orange ones in Morrisons..needed to do some market research....I won't tell you how many are left but dh and dd did help.

Jellybean23 · 18/01/2026 21:54

Lidl have their own version. Fight back , buy some Polar bars.

P.S Penguins have been extinct in this household for many years.

Flannelfeet · 18/01/2026 21:55

Just pick, pick, picckkk up a penguin for the families sake 😆 🤣 😂. Only kidding..Just buy mcvities gold bars and tell them all penguins are shite and your never buying them again! Xx

This would make me love my husband more.

Are Lidl aware that Polar Bears and Penguins dont exist together in reality. They're on opposite sides of the world.

RamALamADingDong2 · 18/01/2026 21:56

I had one recently and was sorely disappointed! They're not even made with chocolate anymore!!!

JudgeJ · 18/01/2026 21:57

LalalaLava · 18/01/2026 17:46

I'm guessing "flavours"

Aren't they all the same though? I recall, back in the late '50s/early '60s, my little brother and I would fight over who got the green one!

Auroraloves · 18/01/2026 21:57

Really mess with him, get some seal bars in

Allaboutthecats · 18/01/2026 20:26

They were my least favourite. Give me a club, trio, gold bar or viscount any day.

Penguins, wagon wheels and blue riband can do one.

What about a taxi a United or a bandit?

ncghghgh · 18/01/2026 21:58

I bought some today funnily enough 😂

tealandteal · 18/01/2026 21:58

No we don’t have any penguins in the house and I don’t think I have ever bought them in the 15+ years I have shopped for my own food. DH has never brought home penguins although he says his parents would often have them in.

My mum never bought penguins but my grandad did occasionally, he was more likely to have a blue riband in though.

My children are 8 and 3, I don’t think they have ever eaten a penguin. They are not usually served at the parties we’ve been too.

Dragonflytamer · 18/01/2026 22:00

I am refusing to buy them now that they have been downgraded from having a "chocolate coating" to a mere "chocolate flavoured coating". Yet another casualty of the hunt for cheap ingredients.

BackToRealitySigh · 18/01/2026 22:00

I nearly had a packet today but Aldi wanted £3.49 for 14 biscuits which I thought was ahem....daylight robbery excessive

Feelinold · 18/01/2026 21:22

This post has made me remember how much I miss Penguins 'in the dark'. They were dark chocolate penguins that were in a dark blue packet and tasted SO so good. Does your husband remember those?
It's so sad that now Penguin bars are not just chocolate flavoured now. I miss the jokes too.

I voted YABU as I think a plate of penguins will go down well at most children's birthday party. Not sure about the Britishness aspect but it certainly sounds nostalgic for your husband and as long as he's healthy, why not let him enjoy them.

They still have jokes on them?

Probably. 😂

magicstar1 · 18/01/2026 22:05

Go to Aldi and get him a pack of their Seal bars instead Grin

Dragonflytamer · 18/01/2026 22:05

soupyspoon · 18/01/2026 18:28

They're not chocolaty enough for me.

They're not really chocolate at all any more. Just chemically flavoured palm oil....

VillaOfReducedCircumstances · 18/01/2026 22:05

If I had a pack of penguins in at all times, I’d just eat them all all of the time.

wfhwfh · 18/01/2026 22:05

winewolfhowls · 18/01/2026 19:28

Sounds sweet tbh
You'd be more pissed off if it was Ferraro Rodgers, it would cost a bomb.

I agree! A lot of Mumsnet posts i read and feel vicariously seething on behalf of the women with the aggravating husbands. But i think this is endearing - its evidently an integral part of his childhood he wants to take forward into adult life. And it sounds like he’s the one picking them up at the shops too. Very wholesome

I love when they do this 😁.

ADogRocketShip · 18/01/2026 22:06

Don’t think I’ve bought penguins ever! Mum had a pack in the cupboard now and again when we were kids but I def haven’t bothered buying any since I moved out (about 20 years ago!)

Hatty123 · 18/01/2026 22:06

Nope. I hate them, no one in my house or my extended family has ever taken to them. Cheap tasting chocolate and a weird after taste in my opinion! I’d wolf down a Cadbury’s chocolate finger though, or 10! 🤣

SGBK4862 · 18/01/2026 22:08

I never buy them. I lived in a residential place for a while in my 20s (for work) and the cook always gave me penguins in my packed lunch, when I required one. I developed an aversion towards them and eventually couldn't bear to eat them at all (though love chocolate). In those days they probably were coated in real chocolate too....assume it's chocolate coating now?? Your DH has revolting habits! (My nephew had an obsession with penguins - soft toy ones)

Negroany · 18/01/2026 22:09

Prefer a Club.

Reminds me of my nan giving them to us in a bowl, and we used to very carefully open the silver paper at one end, slide the Club out, and then refold it so it looked like it was still there - I'm not sure we ever fooled nan, but it made us laugh.

Anyway, no Penguins here. Nor Clubs actually.

sanityisamyth · 18/01/2026 22:10

I don’t think I’ve ever bought a packet of Penguins? Weren’t they on the list of now being “chocolate flavour” as they don’t have enough cocoa powder in them to class as chocolate? If so, even less reason for me to buy them!
