DH’s penguin obsession

BettyWhittaker · 18/01/2026 17:39

DH is obsessed with penguins (the biscuits, not the birds) and always has been. He says every British household has a packet of penguins in - just as his grandparents did 30 years ago.
He’s particularly excited at the minute as they’re on offer in Asda for £1 a pack. He came in the other day with 3 packets, all different players - acting like he’d just closed in on the deal of the century.

Anyway, I know it sounds petty but it’s winding me up. Every evening around 8pm he stands up and says “penguin?” No I don’t want a fucking penguin, I never do and I’ve told him to stop asking me. Yes it sounds like a small thing but this is years of frustration. This morning his mother came around whilst he was out and once I made a coffee she said “no penguins in?” Ffs and they act like I’m the weird one!!!

Anyway next week we’re having a little party for DGD and DH wants a plate of penguins all arranged on a plate for the buffet. I think this is tacky as hell. He thinks I’m being a snob.

AIBU???

Bonus points for anyone who can tell me if every British household does indeed have at least one packet of penguins in.

YANBU but still it’s very funny.

I haven’t seen a penguin since about 1987. Didn’t know they still existed. And sounds like I’d be really disappointed by the current ones.

Wish I’d eaten more in the 80s, but we were both too poor and too posh so my mother hardly ever bought them.

Blueuggboots · 18/01/2026 20:14

Bleugh. I hate penguins.

and yes, he’s weird!!!

Bigdayout · 18/01/2026 20:14

Haven't had penguins in years. There's much better chocolate and biscuits out there nowadays. They aren't even proper chocolate anymore. The family obsession with them is weird.

Talipesmum · 18/01/2026 20:06

Wrong! Mint and chocolate are the best and mint clubs are better than orange clubs. Orange chocolate is v nice but mint chocolate clubs are better. Gavel. Etc.

ps do you remember Club Class biscuits? They were the fancy high end “taste the difference” style version of clubs in the 90s. You used to be able to get hazelnut ones (great) and fruit ones (bad - raisin chocolate).

You are very wrong! Orange flavour are obviously the best.

JustAnotherBoyMaman · 18/01/2026 20:15

I'm sorry but this post has made me want to go to Asda and buy some penguins.

ThatMintMember · 18/01/2026 20:15

That's pretty funny but everyone has their quirks! If I ever ask my husband what he wants from the shop it's always Wine Gums (i don't always get them but that is always his response). He is also obsessed with pepsi max and barely drinks any other fluids. For me it's sandwiches that I love, I had a chicken sandwich 5 days in a row last week 😂 and you can't beat a kit kat chunky for dipping in tea!

Go bit on your own obsessions and get your own back!

Phonicshaskilledmeoff · 18/01/2026 20:15

Buy him some Timtams - they will blow his mind

WiltedLettuce · 18/01/2026 20:16

Sponsor a real penguin for him for his birthday.

SurferRona · 18/01/2026 20:16

They aren’t nice, so none in this household. Weirdly, I do like the m&s chocolate covered bourbons and custard creams, which are effectively penguins. But taste nice. But Every night? And his mum wants them too? 😂. If I were you I’d get in some uber-naice biscuits and he can have his penguin, you get yours. Maybe one of those amazing M&S caramelled white chocolate florentines. He’d change his mind pdq 😉

Poppins2016 · 18/01/2026 20:17

I've never bought a packet of Penguins (I don't like them). DH probably comes home with a packet once every year or so (on average)...

AwfullyGood · 18/01/2026 20:17

Look at it this way, if you ever get divorced, you could probably negotiate keeping the house in exchange for 10,000 pengiun bars 😀

CeciliaMars · 18/01/2026 20:18

Love a Penguin.

JustToBeMe · 18/01/2026 20:18

I don’t, but then I’m T2.
I’d rather have a Jaffa cake to be fair 😆

Penguins are another victim of the general shitification of everything good: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c86737yg3jlo.amp

It is just McVitie's ripping people off

Aldi manage to sell their version with chocolate and they are cheaper

Bit disappointed when I opened this thread and saw it was about biscuits and not actual penguins 🐧

I don't think I've had a Penguin biscuit since I was in my early teens and visiting my GPs 25-odd years ago. Definitely have never bought them as an adult. DH is Canadian, been living over here for 6 years now, I just asked him in case they've had them at work or something but no, he's never tried a Penguin (temptation to say he's never p-p-picked up a Penguin is overwhelming, sorry 🫣).

We have bought the M&S chocolate covered bourbons a few times though, they're fab.

Homegrownberries · 18/01/2026 20:20

Once upon a time they were lovely but with the current list of ingredients - no thanks.

Milk Chocolate Flavour Coating (29%) [Sugar, Vegetable Oils (Palm, Shea), Cocoa Mass, Dried Skimmed Milk, Dried Whey (Milk), Butter Oil (Milk), Emulsifiers (Soya Lecithin, E476), Natural Flavouring], Flour (Wheat Flour, Calcium, Iron, Niacin, Thiamin), Sugar, Palm Oil, Glucose-Fructose Syrup, Fat Reduced Cocoa Powder, Raising Agents (Sodium Bicarbonate, Ammonium Bicarbonate), Natural Flavouring, Salt

SeaShellsSanctuary1 · 18/01/2026 20:21

I suggest you watch Benedict Cumberbatch on Graham Norton mis-pronouncing Penguins. You could try this on him to wind him up 😀

PickledMuffin · 18/01/2026 20:21

There’s different flavours of Penguin bars! I never knew that! 🤯

TY78910 · 18/01/2026 20:21

One for the MN Classics I think….

Fillyfrog · 18/01/2026 20:21

I buy them most weeks when they're on offer for kids lunchboxes but often find they're left in the cupboard uneaten since they changed to chocolate flavour coating or whatever it is. They definitely aren't as nice as they used to be, just sugar.

Imisscoffee2021 · 18/01/2026 20:22

Has he bitten a corner off from each end and seemed tea through it so its all gooey and soggy and amazing yet?

Archymum · 18/01/2026 20:22

I have never once in my life had a Penguin.

PickledMuffin · 18/01/2026 20:23

@JJWT that’s awful 😢

NoodleHorses · 18/01/2026 20:24

My kitchen is a penguin free zone. I honestly cannot remember the last time I had one, let alone bought a packet.

Farticus101 · 18/01/2026 20:24

A bit disappointed this isn't about real penguins. I thought you were going to say your DH dresses up as a penguin or something.
