Bizarre things you couldnt fathom

Not AIBU. Just curious.
Have you ever experienced anything either publicly or privately that just didn't make sense or seemed bizarre or you just couldnt fathom in some way.
I was in a small cafe looking out on Trafalgar Square about 10 years ago. ..Alan Yentob walked in through the door. .I kept an eye constantly on the door because I wanted to get a good look at him when he walked out again but I didn't want to stare while he was in the cafe. I was by the window seat looking out on Trafalgar Square. After about 15 minutes i turned my head and looked round in the cafe and he was nowhere to be seen. It was a small cafe !! He wasnt sitting at any of the tables and I'd had my eye on the door the whole time so I know he couldn" t have slipped past me. There was no other exit and only some toilets. It was a really bizarre experience that I can't fathom to this day. I KNOW I never took my eye off the door. I just dont know where he went.

I was lying reading on my bed one evening. Husband was putting the baby down in the bedroom diagonally across the landing. It was late summer so it was still light outside. All was quiet.

Suddenly heard a man yell out in real rage from the next room. A real roar of rage. Got the fright of my life.

Wondering if my (extremely passive, gentle) husband had taken actual leave of his senses, I raced out on to the landing (heading for the baby’s room) and at the same time my husband ran out of the baby’s room looking really freaked out. We both shouted “what the hell was that??” He thought I was being attacked. I thought he had lost the plot with the (now sleeping) baby.

No one around outside. I guess it must have carried from somewhere but it genuinely sounded like it was coming from inside the house. Never did figure it out.

When I was a child we had two fish in a tank. Flash and superfish.

one day, flash just vanished. We couldn’t work it out, where had he gone?

the mystery has a resolution though. We found him behind the cabinet a year later .. well, his mummified body. He’d jumped out the tank!

I feel like the only explanation for this one is your husband sneaked in and grabbed the phone while your back was turned so he could have a good look through it…

Yes I thought that - he’d been having a good old snoop in it in his shed or playing a bit of a mean trick on you.

Well he lived up to his name! (For those too young to know what I mean):

🎵 Flash! A-ah!
He's a miracle
Flash! A-ah!
King of the impossible! 🎵

Alan Yentob has left the building.

I drove past a pick your own strawberries farm not far from where I live and saw my MIL bending over picking fruit. She was wearing an outfit she wore often. As I drove past the car park I saw her car. I mentioned it when I next saw her and she said she hadn't been there. I thought she'd forgotten (although unlikely) but she had been out with her friend in a different town the whole day. I know it must have been a lookalike with the same clothes and the same car with a similar reg. no. maybe, but I would have bet anything it was her.

What kind of missions?

Things I have to do. Can’t talk about them on here as they delete the posts.

About 20 years ago when I was in my twenties I was in a pub with a couple of friends. The pub was next door to a newspaper office so there were a few journalists there too.

I got talking to one of them. He had a proof of the paper with him and I said something like, oh are you proof reading / checking for typos? Journo (arrogantly) said there would never be any typos…I said of course there will be at least one typo in a whole paper….its just the nature of the beast. He insisted….

Anyway he challenged me to find a typo. I started reading and as I turned page after page, started to think I might have to confess I could find no typo.

My friend came over to stand beside me to ask what on earth I was doing. I explained and carried on reading.

Then I saw a thick yellow line appear around a headline, somewhere in the middle of the paper. The headline itself contained a major typo which I wish I could remember the detail of! I pointed it out to the journalist and he fled back to the office to fix it before the paper went for publication.

I cannot explain it but I know what I saw. I think my friend somehow helped me to see it. He thought that too.

We had a kitchen bin (nothing fancy) posted to our address during lockdown under my husband’s name. However, my husband nor I (nor the kids!) ordered a bin. It had no delivery slip with it to know its origin - just in a plain box. We scoured Amazon, eBay, everywhere to see if it was an accidental purchase but no record of any order and no money taken out of our bank account! No relative purchased it for us either. The weird thing was our old bin lid had recently broken so it was a handy replacement even if pretty basic!

I was babysitting my younger siblings one night whilst my parents were at a local pub at a birthday party. They would call regularly to check on me.
I fell asleep on the sofa, and woke up to my dad walking through the door. It was on open plan lounge diner, with glass french doors leading to the lounge/diner. The front door was clearly visible from the sofa. My dad walked in, I woke up, he said "hey baby, my stomach is a bit dodgy, just going to the toilet" he walked past me on the sofa, down the hall. I heard the bathroom door close. I got up, walked through to the kitchen, got myself a glass of water, and one for my dad. Went back to sit on the sofa, flicking through the TV. Waited a good half hour, then went to chap on the bathroom door, which was closed with the light shining out from underneath. I was the last to use this bathroom, and knew I had left the door open and the light off. Knocked the door, shouted dad, and open the door to find the bathroom empty. I searched the entire house and started panicking when I couldn't find him.

Called the pub, asked for my mum, started explaining the situation and she stopped me and said "your dad is standing right next to me and has been all night.
Que my dad sprinting home to make sure I was OK!
The most bizarre thing I've ever experienced!

Edited for typos

When I was about 25, I had just moved house with my boyfriend and I was out with a friend one night. At gone 9pm a young man who spoke in a very London “street” kind of way called my landline and asked for me by name (which is unusual and masculine). When my boyfriend said I wasn’t there, he didn’t leave a number but said “tell her that David called”.

I did not know anyone called David nor anyone who spoke like that (not anywhere near London). I had not given anyone my brand new landline number. I was totally vexed but what happened the next morning only vexed me further!

I got his number from 1471. The area code was from the city I lived just outside of. So I called it back. A middle-aged Jamaican woman that sounded like his mum answered, so i asked for David and told her my name. She shouts for him saying “David, it’s Reins.”

He didn’t even say hello, he just said “ahh sorry for calling last night, I got the wrong number” I said, but you asked for me by name. “Yeah yeah, I meant to call my friend Reins in (another city an hour away) and got the wrong area code.” So I said, so you have a female friend called Reins with exactly my number? “Yep, sorry, bye.”

I just can’t work it out!

His excuse just can’t be true or else he’d have assumed it was his friend on the phone when his mum called him to the phone.

If he was calling for dodgy reasons (but I can’t think of any) such that he would want to deny it the next morning, he would have used fake name and withheld his number, and it can’t have been anything legitimate at that time of night.

Who is David?!! Still bugs me to this day.

Moonlightdust · 12/01/2026 23:31

Oooh I remembered another one! Several years ago in the middle of Christmas Eve night, our Google Assistant device suddenly and very loudly started playing “Santa Claus is coming to town!” It terrified the life out of us as it woke us all up! All family members swore profusely they didn’t set it! The thing was the version was ‘olde worlde’ and so beautiful and enchanting with bells ringing - I’ve tried searching for the same music and never found it! It was also kind of magical as the children were young and believed in Santa 🧑‍🎄 I always wondered if it was some global hack!

I see angels. Nobody else sees them. I can talk to them, touch them, hear them. They set me missions.
Im not psychotic, had two opinions from psychs recently (was diagnosed psychotic for a few years and on antipsychotic meds).
So my only conclusion is that they are in fact a reality, and I was chosen as they say.

What do they look like? What do they ask you to do?

MyLittleTrojanPony · 12/01/2026 23:56

I’ve posted about these before…

I was wearing my AirPods to sleep one night and woke up and one had gone.
I hadn’t left the room and we spent weeks literally gutting the bedroom to find it but never did so I had to buy a replacement.

A few weeks later I had new carpet fitted so there was nowhere it could have been hiding when the room was completely emptied. My Dp had been awake reading and said I didn’t leave the room wearing the AirPods but surely even if I had we’d have found it anyway after 2 years?!

My dad used to wear a distinctive aftershave that stopped being made in this country so I ordered it from the US for every birthday and Christmas for him until he died in 2014.
My mum was diagnosed with cancer a few years later and the night she died there was me, my mums cat and my sisters dog all alone in the room. It wasn’t a nice death and my mum was hanging on but they upped her morphine and the last few hours were kind of peaceful.

The cat was lying on her tummy on the bed and the dog was curled up on the sofa opposite with me.
I’d been awake 22 hours and very drowsy when the smell of my dads aftershave filled the room and was so strong and distinctive so I was confused, suddenly the dog let out a howl and the cat started whining and my mum took her last breath.

I didn’t believe in anything supernatural and very much of the mindset that if we had no proof or scientific explanation then there must be a logical reason behind things, I’ve never found one that fits that night though.

I live very rurally on an old road where there have been a lot of accidents over the years.
I was walking home one night from the gym which is about 5 minutes from me in a hotel, the hotel and my house and a neighbouring one are the only buildings for miles. The road is unlit with no pavement and pretty scary but my car was in the garage.
I was nearly home when I heard a strange scratching noise behind me and when I turned to look behind me there was what looked like a man dressed in black but his body was like a shadow, he had a luminous white face with black eyes and I don’t recall any other facial features because I was just drawn to the eyes.
I can’t properly explain better then that because we made eye contact for a split second then I turned to look in front of me to see if anyone else was around or any cars passing and when I looked back the figure had gone.
The road was straight and it was so quick there was nowhere anyone could disappear to.

I ran the rest of the way home almost hysterical with panic and I don’t know if my Dp would have believed me if he hadn’t seen the state I was in.
I have walked a few times since but never seen the figure again and I’ve tried and failed to come up with an explanation but reading some of these stories I guess there will always be things we can’t find answers for, maybe we aren’t meant to know everything?

That cafe is the secret headquarters of BBC bigwigs and they can access their offices from the staff quarters? He knew someone who worked there and went into the back?

I had to Google who he was I’m afraid!

😂I know. Funny you should say that though cos my imagination did take hold and I did wonder if he knew some kind of shortcut through the back for whatever reason. It did all look a bit ' cloak and dagger' to be honest.

It was the 80s. I was 8 or 9 and we were building a school holiday den. It was circular under a yew bush with a sandy soil back wall curving around at about 4ft high. The day before we carved a nice arched alcove out of the bank to make a sort of shelf/cupboard.

Conforming to gender stereotypes as you did , I was sweeping the “kitchen” area with twigs, while my male friend J was setting up booby traps for invaders. I looked up and there was a hole in the middle of the alcove with an eye blinking at me!

I was only inches away so know what I saw. I turned to call J and when he came over the hole was there but the eye had gone. We ran home scared.

It rained for a couple of days and when we plucked up the courage to go back some teenagers had taken over the den.

The memory of the eye incident is so vivid to both me and J who is still a friend. I still ponder what it was - maybe a badger or a fox, but to us then it was definitely a goblin.

It must have been a badger. Surely it couldnt have been a person.

DH & I removed a set of internal glass doors between the lounge and dining room. Both doors held by a pair of 3" brass hinges. We removed the first door, no problem, DH unscrewed the bottom set of hinges on the 2nd door whilst I held it, all good...I was still holding the door, DH unscrewed the 2nd hinge and it fell to the floor - I moved the door outside and we looked for the hinge...
Let's just say that the hinge (heavy, large and brass) was nowhere to be seen.
We have completely stripped the room to redecorate and refloor (separate occasions but room completely emptied each time) and the hinge has never been found...

I used to work casually at the weekend at a framing business.

It was over two floors in an industrial unit on a modern estate. Upstairs was where the heavy equipment and mouldings were kept. As a side thing, the boss ran a badminton club, and sold shuttlecocks so sometimes I would have to go up and get them for regular customers.

On one occasion, I was fulfilling this task so jogged up the metal stairs and went towards the "shuttlecock section". At the end I could clearly see a large carboard box, around 18 inches square and about 3 feet high slowly rocking from side to side, fully on its edges if you see what I mean. I stopped in my tracks, there was no noise on the creaky metal floor, and after a few seconds it came to a halt. I approached it, trying to think logically that it had maybe been empty and fallen off the racking, perhaps due to vibration from me coming up the stairs. However it was two thirds full of tubes of shuttlecocks, and I couldn't fully lift it. It would have made a hell of a thump if it had falen, and due to the netal infrastructure, I would have heard it without a doubt. Also, it couldn't have fallen in the position it did, as these boxes were kept lying down with the end open so the cocks coyld be accessed.

I grabbed what I needed, high tailed it down the srmtairs, served the customer while trying to explain why it had taken a bit longer, who backed out of the place obviously thinking I was completely insane.

It is one of the most bizarre yet mundane things I have ever experienced.

Thats spooky

I was sitting quietly reading one evening when Alexa started to laugh, really loud guffaws. I turned my head slowly to look at the speaker and the laughter stopped. 'She' then started to speak in Chinese. I was so freaked out I unplugged her. It never happened again.

It's because of stuff like this I won't have a alexa. My 7yo has begged me to get one for a few years now, bit I'm not putting up with shit like that from an electronic device!
