Bizarre things you couldnt fathom

Not AIBU. Just curious.
Have you ever experienced anything either publicly or privately that just didn't make sense or seemed bizarre or you just couldnt fathom in some way.
I was in a small cafe looking out on Trafalgar Square about 10 years ago. ..Alan Yentob walked in through the door. .I kept an eye constantly on the door because I wanted to get a good look at him when he walked out again but I didn't want to stare while he was in the cafe. I was by the window seat looking out on Trafalgar Square. After about 15 minutes i turned my head and looked round in the cafe and he was nowhere to be seen. It was a small cafe !! He wasnt sitting at any of the tables and I'd had my eye on the door the whole time so I know he couldn" t have slipped past me. There was no other exit and only some toilets. It was a really bizarre experience that I can't fathom to this day. I KNOW I never took my eye off the door. I just dont know where he went.

Every day I used to walk past a little semicircular grass patch on the way from work. One day I had a feeling I should walk around the patch instead of straight past it -it would only have added a few seconds to my journey time. As soon as I left my normal route, a car went out of control and mounted the pavement. I have no doubt the little detour saved my life. The car smashed into a lamp post. The driver wasn't killed, but the front of the car was mangled.

That's amazing.
Something similar happened to someone I know. He was driving on a country lane and before a blind bend he heard someone shout "Slow down" so he did. No one around or in his car. It was night time. Just then a lorry rounded the corner on the wrong side of the road. Maybe been on their phone or something? He doesn't know but he'd have been wiped out.

Oh @LushLemonTart and @NotMeAtAll in 1983 I intended to do some Christmas shopping at Harrods. I always used the Hans Crescent entrance. I started walkg towards it and suddenly decided to turn heel and go to Boots instead. The bomb went off before I got there.

Had he been drinking😂

You'd have to be pretty plastered, and would you remember it afterwards? And this was someone whose livelihood depended on driving.

The brain can do all sorts of weird things. For example they think when deja vu happens it's just the brain stopping for a micro amount of time so that it is then registering its current situation as something that happened in the past when it actually happened a nanosecond before. But that temporary switch off gives the person the impression that the thing they were experiencing happened a long time ago. So maybe this thing was another kind of weird brain thing.

@beholdtheidiot either you’re having us on or your friend is, that is so obviously photoshopped. Why is the whole photo so much darker, with no surrounding room. Your friend probably doesn’t want to talk about it as they did it for a joke and were embarrassed when people believed them.

Blondiebeachbabe · 17/01/2026 12:51

I have a few of these.

Many years ago I decided to leave my first H, due to his continued cheating. I had not told a living soul about this. One night my H was out, and I was sat browsing the internet at houses, to see what I could afford on my own. My phone then rang and it was my Mum. She explained that they'd been to the village hall that had a Medium night on. She went on to tell me, that a Medium had told her that she could hear someone calling out my name, and to tell me that a move of house was indicated, a good man, and happiness. My Mum obviously thought it was nonsense, as in her mind I was happy. I should add here, that I have a VERY unusual name. I did indeed leave, get a new house, and met my now DH.

This same Medium told my Mum that she would come into possession of a guitar in unusual circumstances, and that she would win the lottery. About a year after the reading, my parents were sitting in the garden at about midnight, and a guitar came flying over the fence, and landed on the lawn. Then, a few weeks later, they did indeed win the lottery (£20k).

Mum is no longer with us, and I was watching a Medium on Tiktok, who told me that if you want contact from loved ones who have passed, you have to ask out loud for it and ask for a sign. I asked out loud for my Mum to show me a butterfly. A few weeks later, on Mother's Day, my DH gave me a card from the dogs. It was a plain card, with a pin badge in the centre of a beautiful butterfly. I wear it on my coat now.

Shortly after that, I asked my Mum to show me a bumblebee. The next day, I see a FB advert posted by a lady with the same name as my Mum, who happens to make woollen bumblebees. The name of her company was my Mum's favourite flower.

I asked about 2 weeks ago for Mum to show me a feather in an unusual place. The next day my dog was sitting in the garden with a white feather stuck to his lips!

DH and I were talking about MIL one day, she has also passed away. One of us said something a bit negative and a huge canvas flew off the wall.

I saw a Medium a few months ago - first time I have ever done so, and she knew my Mum's name. She also knew lots of things she had no way of knowing. The appointment was booked anonymously, on purpose.

I have a few more like this. Very strange!

Someone I know stayed in a hotel in Chester. The rooms were all decorated in an older style and all had large portraits In the room. The person took a pic of the room to show a relative. This shows the portrait above the bed. They showered and when they came out the picture had changed.
They say they went to reception and the people were baffled and had no idea how the picture had changed. When he went back to the room it was back to normal again.
I know the story is vague but the person it happened to was really disturbed by it and I don’t want to out them. It’s all really strange, the person would rather not talk about it.

I don't think Emperor Maximilian I ever made it to Chester. I think your pal needs to be more worried about the Habsburg jaw and genetic implications of inbreeding Grin

I have suspected that he’s having us on as it’s so absolutely ridiculous and the photo doesn’t even look like the original. He has spoken very little about it though and refuses to engage over it. He is adamant it happened but has made it clear he won’t talk about it. It’s all very weird.

That's interesting re deja view. It makes sense. But I can't see how it would work in this case. But maybe he fell asleep for a moment and dreamt it, or had some sort of waking dream.

The laughing Alexa has just reminded me of our soundbar incident a few years ago.

Every so often, we'd suddenly get incredibly loud music coming from our living room. It wasnt a single recognisable track as such, but loud guitar rock in a loop. No vocal. We quickly tracked it down to the soundbar but couldn't work out what it was connected to. I even went next door to check if the teenager there was inadvertently connecting to it through their Bluetooth.

It continued for weeks and weeks. I updated software, unplugged and replugged, disconnected the TV several times but it continued to happen - even in the middle of the night (scary!). I think I even asked for advice here on mn.

I finally had a long-overdue brainwave and changed my password on my Spotify account (not written down and only known to me) and it never happened again.

Bizarre.

When I was a child, I was fast asleep in my room, the family dog we had always slept at the bottom of my bed. Early hours of the morning (didn't know or look at the time) he was growling at something across the room, it woke me up, nothing was there that I could see. It freaked me out.

I had a round helium balloon in my room, partially deflated. One day we found out that my Grandad had passed away. I was in my room feeling sad and in shock, looked at this balloon at it was inflated. Kind of freaked me out.

Was just about to go to bed when I heard my DS talking, I went to go see what he was doing, he was fast asleep. Strange I thought. I looked back on baby monitors. He said something like 'Where's (insert DD name here)? Oh erm she's over there and pointed. Nothing else untoward. Checked the other baby monitor where DD was, as he finished saying it, saw a flash in the hallway. It freaked me out and I still have no clue. DS doesn't remember when I asked him about it.

Last year I was driving on a dark country road and what looked like a dark metallic sphere about the size of a beer keg rolled out of a hedge from the left and made audible contact with the side panel of my car. Found no sign of any collision, nothing in the road, nothing on the car. Spooked me at the time.

That reminds me of a drive towards London a couple of years ago - a Friday night in December so it was pitch black by 5pm. Driving up the dual carriageway and some small bouncy balls randomly bounce across the road in front of me. Came from the side of road which was just a low bank with woodland about 20 metres set back. Drove on another few miles and again a couple balls bounced across the road and even hit my car’s undercarriage, which gave me a fright! I started to think maybe pranksters throwing them, but after another 30 miles or so with no balls I saw another bounce across the road ahead. Was so odd as they weren’t falling out a lorry for instance as they were coming from the side of the road but nothing was there other than fields and no sign of people!

My husband was in the bath, about to doze off, so his eyes were closed.
Then, in his ear, he hears my voice really annunciating his name. Which obviously startled him and woke him up sharpish.

I reckon he just fell asleep and dreamt it.

That's definitely a hypnagogic auditory hallucination. They usually happen when someone's either just dozing off or just waking up, so at the point of transition between being asleep and awake. I get them very frequently, so I'm very used to them now, but people who have only rarely or never experienced them often think they're something supernatural or inexplicable, because they do feel incredibly real. Mine are usually a voice, someone screaming/shouting in fear or anger, a loud electrical buzz or a volley of furious knocks/thumps on the door.

Visual hypnagogic hallucinations can also happen in the same way, where people see something that isn't there just as their brain is switching from conscious to unconscious. I get those too, which is why I'm extremely sceptical when someone who believes they've seen a ghost describes it as 'a figure standing at the end of the bed / in the corner / sitting in the chair during the night' because that's exactly what my hypnagogic hallucinations are like. I get them very frequently and I can see why someone would think they were ghosts; they can be terrifying.

I was at a friend's house talking to her mum. We were talking about her husband's dad, who had died many years before.

All of a sudden, a wooden flower in a vase on the table starting spinning madly around. Was absolutely wild, with zero explanation. No windows were open, no gusts of wind. WTF.

Another one (well, two) is my DM worked on a supposedly haunted part of a hospital. There were lots of reports of odd things happening. But the two oddest were; the time when some chained-closed and locked doors started randomly rattling really aggressively. There was absolutely no way there could have been anyone on the other side of them, as that whole part of the ward was closed and had been for years and years, with no other way in the other side.

The other time, was when my DM had cleaned lots of blood up in a room where a lady had given birth recently. She popped out to get something for a few seconds, and when she came back, all the blood had reappeared exactly where it had been, and she had to re clean it again. Apparently, the same thing had happened to other midwives in the same room.

All sound absolutely batshit and unbelievable. All 100% true.

sausagepastapot · 23/01/2026 17:56

Oh I have just read the thread and remembered another one.

I worked in a pub as a teenager and was frying chips upstairs, on my own, in the kitchen. It is a very very old pub, 16th century.

I was listening to a CD on the stereo, when all of a sudden noticed a massive, black, blobby shadow flash and move quickly from the fryer to the stereo- at this exact moment the music started skipping and eventually stopped altogether.

Shit myself, took the chips out the fryer, and legged it back downstairs...!!!

18 years ago,I was pregnant but we didnt want to know the sex (well I did but my ex didnt)

Anyway,I was stood, very hot and very fat at the end of what felt like the longest queue in the local shop

I got chatting to the lady in front of me and she asked if I knew 'what your having?' And I said 'no,we want a surprise'

Clear as a bell i heard 'it's a girl' but the voice was 'inside my ear' rather than someone saying it to me

Gave birth to a girl 2 weeks late 4 weeks later
