We can’t. We decided to spend all our money on welfare and the NHS, and as such we have not invested in our military, infrastructure, business or the other essentials needed to function independently without relying on the States.

The resulting embarrassing dependency and sycophancy is a problem entirely of our own making.

Some of us did say 🤷‍♀️

That's a fair point. And my response is that perhaps if the US had not decided to keep the arms race going on an ever increasing trajectory, then there might be smaller armies everywhere.

Ike warned of this. That the US should be spending on houses and schools, not bombers and guns.

And look at those "officers of the law" that shot that woman. Decked out in tricked out gear. Gun fetishists.

Ike on the Military Industrial complex. Great speech.

And in the meantime, ICE doesn't seem chastened in the least

People have stolen police cars and imitated cops before

Melissa Hortman and her husband got killed by one

The BBC analysis is very good. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/videos/ceqzj9932wjo

It's very obvious that she wasn't trying to run anyone over. The agent was to the front left. She was turning right. He had plenty of time to step safely out of the way of the slow-moving car. In fact, we know he did so. He even had time to shoot her through the windscreen before stepping out of the way and shooting again through the driver window.

To me, this is where America crosses a line. I know it probably did a while ago, but this feels different. Not so much because a policeman shot a civilian - that kind of thing does happen in America. But because the President and the government have come out so strongly with a blatant lie about the murdered woman being a terrorist who was trying to run people over. And the scariest thing is that so many people - including on this board - are swallowing the lie, because they want to. American democracy is in a precarious position right now.

Hi. Could you please link to the evidence from these repected authorities? Thank you.

Well Mr Trump for one.

I also think we need to decide our stance on intervention.

On one hand the left wing routinely scream about us leaving other countries alone, minding our own business, not feeling entitled to meddle in international or overseas affairs.

On the other hand they’re insistent we do interfere when it’s against Trump or similar, and call us weak for not doing enough.

So - which is it?

Neither ? I mean you may only see two options. But that's just you.

You forget Kent State - among others.

No. It's accurate. The ICE officer aimed at her face and shot her in the face. It very much IS necessary to report the actual events, rather than obfuscate.

Was there ever any doubt?

You'd think that even if they don't care about lethal authoritarianism or three children being left motherless, because they're so edgy and cool, they'd care about so obviously only going for the lowest hanging fruit.

Law enforcement said to get out of the car, she refused drives towards the ICE officer and so he did nothing wrong.

Oh I’m so tired of this ‘you spend money on guns and not benefits’ malarkey.

Russia and China are huge, uncontrolled and mysterious threats to the world. We have already had a nerve gas attack on home soil here in England (RIP Dawn), they attempted to murder a further 2 people and left an entire small city exposed to a deadly biohazard. Russia is currently trying to invade Ukraine, a sovereign nation.

Military spending isn’t just about buying weapons; it’s about recruiting more staff, modernising, improving systems, intelligence. We’ve been forced to commit to putting boots on the ground in Ukraine because the USA will not do this, we blithely they would and have been caught with our pants down. We can’t afford it.

Benefits are nice but they’re basically a bottomless pit and a black hole of spending that increases year on year, disincentivises work and ultimately are not improving our country in the long run. Through work I have seen probably thousands of people (in our local area) whose lives have been destroyed by benefits dependence.

Let’s actually start spending on long term solutions and building our country back up again. Then we won’t be the US lapdog. But for now we have no choice.

Yep, but that doesn’t seem to be the narrative some people on here want to accept!

Absolutely 100% state sanctioned murder.
What in the actual hell is going on with America right now.
Trump has caused misery to millions in his own country, now he's marching into other countries and taking over for spurious reasons and insinuating Greenland is next. He truly is the epitome of a lunatic.

Untailored · 08/01/2026 16:49

How ironic that Trump is telling us how terrible it is to attack a law enforcement officer. Yet he pardoned all the January 6 offenders, including the ones who were convicted of…..oh…attacking law enforcement officers.

I'd suggest offering asylum to sensible Americans now trapped in the dystopian hellscape that was once their home but sadly, I don't think it would be much help, as the UK appears to be heading in the same direction.

How's Canada looking these days, and what are the chances they'd welcome us all?

I heard it is wonderful and welcome liberals.

NaughtyTortieOwner00 · 08/01/2026 16:49

Bruisername · 08/01/2026 16:24

Yes agree - also the healthcare ceo

i just can’t understand how anyone can justify killing someone in any of those circumstances

if we no longer value life then what does that make us

It a worry development from both left and right - that's in US it somehow seen as fine or understanable to kill people if you disagree with them.

I think it shows a much wider problem that they have.

NotTerfNorCis · 08/01/2026 16:49

Video shows the ICE agent standing to the side of the car and out of its path when he fired. He wasn't defending himself or anyone else. In fact, he was creating a danger.

Case closed.. surely?

He did. He placed himself in front of the vehicle and shot into a moving car.

Can’t find it now but apparently that is against all their training and law enforcement policies. They do not use firearms to disable or stop a vehicle.

simplesimoneatspie · 08/01/2026 16:51

PevenseygirlQQ · 08/01/2026 16:48

Well, the fact is she consciously didn’t follow law enforcement orders which resulted in the consequence of such a decision. Tragic, but logical.

FirstCuppa · 08/01/2026 16:52

Trump immediately saying she ran over an ICE member and he was hospitalised made me convinced it was a murder. You can clearly see all 3 men walking away on both legs completely fine once he has shot her.

Her wheels were turning right he was to the left of the car shooting point blank at her you could see it on the video.
They were screaming get out the fucking car.
I cannot comprehend how you are in any way defending this murderers actions. Truly stunned by your thoughts on this.
