‘sober curious’, have a day off…

I’ve just seen an acquaintance post an instagram story labelling themselves as ‘sober curious’ and encouraging people to ask them questions and others to reassess their relationship with alcohol. I’m all for them making changes that make them happier and healthier, but the positioning of the whole thing just made me roll my eyes, not everything needs a label. And if you need to label yourself as ‘sober curious’ in order to cut back then maybe you’re avoiding a more accurate label ‘alcoholic’.

Now I'm pissed-out-of-my-head curious.

StonwEd · 07/01/2026 13:29

Going against the grain i think I fall into this category. Recognise that I've got into unhealthy habits and am adapting and trying to do all the things I have enjoyed with wine, without.

Guess the difference is that I don't call myself sober curious or post about it online 😅 other than this post

Ineedanewsofa · 07/01/2026 13:32

It’s another one of these bloody boxes that get invented on social media for people to put themselves in because they feel the need to constantly define themselves/explain who they are are why they are instead of feeling allowed to drink/not drink as the mood takes them.
There is a pressure, maybe false, maybe real that so many people seem to feel these days to label every aspect of themselves. It must be so tiring!

Gribouille · 07/01/2026 13:36

I'm all for people doing whatever they want/can to quit addiction - maybe it will help some people question their drinking, maybe they feel they'll get criticised by their mates for going teetotal so this is a trendy way of flying under the radar?

The only thing I'd be wary of is if it's just a way of keeping the door open to drinking when you know you really need to stop...

What a load of wank🤷

Absolutely this. 100%.
More self-indulgent shite.

It’s like calling yourself “vegan curious” because you occasionally eat a vegan meal. Until you fancy a bacon sarnie.

I think this is "flexitarian"... 😂

Devilsmommy · 07/01/2026 13:41

Jesus Christ, social media has made everything so bloody wanky now. You're a fucking alcoholic. Sober curious fml

ShesTheAlbatross · 07/01/2026 13:43

So someone who still drinks but occasionally thinks “maybe one day I’ll quit wine” then.

In that case, I’m “exercise curious”.

But seriously, “sober curious” makes it sound like they think being sober is some huge life changing decision that cannot be reversed and needs to be carefully considered before taking the leap. Which, if you have a healthy relationship with alcohol, it is not. I don’t drink anymore. It’s no big deal. No one cares.

ManyPigeons · 07/01/2026 13:45

Dontdisrepectme · 07/01/2026 12:41

What on earth does it mean? Like you're curiously trying to be sober?

Jesus bloody christ on a bike.

Pretty sure it means they’re dipping their toes into sobriety but not willing to go fully teetotal.

It’s what alcoholics call ‘attempting to moderate’ or ‘bargaining’.

Nevermind17 · 07/01/2026 13:50

Crunchymum · 07/01/2026 13:07

Does it mean:

Sober curious = so rarely sober they are curious to know what it feels like 😂

That’s exactly what I would take from it. If you’re usually sober (as most people are) then you wouldn’t be curious about it, you’d know how it felt to be sober.

Bluebluesummer · 07/01/2026 13:52

The endless seeking out validation and the attempts to influence others to make similar choices that some people engage in is really tiresome.

Ellie1015 · 07/01/2026 13:58

I think it is easier to say trying being sober for a month or two than forever. For me it is a mindset for myself, would not be posting it online or encouraging others to do the same as it might come across as judgy/patronising and definitely annoying.

FlyingApple · 07/01/2026 14:00

Why are people like this? It makes me feel like an alien sometimes.

Sameshitedifferentdaze · 07/01/2026 14:05

What a load of utter wank. Just more dull people screaming for attention.

Daleksatemyshed · 07/01/2026 14:09

I miss the days when people weren't afraid of saying what they meant _ sober curious my arse

Onetimeusername1 · 07/01/2026 14:17

If it see it on dating profiles I read it to mean: alcohol problem/alcoholic

KimberleyClark · 07/01/2026 14:20

Sounds like it means he they are experimenting with sobriety, because they are a drunk most of the time?

wishingonastar101 · 07/01/2026 14:26

I'm diet curious and fitness curious.

pontipinemum · 07/01/2026 14:28

IDK anything that makes people question their alcohol consumption can usually only be a good thing.

It is a term that is much more palatable to people and something a lot more people will try.

After a stint in a MH hospital in 2020 I have sworn off drink I am not curious about something that for me = MH disaster.

But I know people that could do with taking it easier and if they did decide to be curious about what it is like to go to a wedding sober or how to adjust to not 'needing' that glass of wine to unwind go for it.

"utter load of wank" is up there in my top expressions along with "bag of shite"...

f me solid
So many people think the rest of the world cares about their life

This 👆

It is why I gave up on Facebook etc. All the benefits are outweighed by adverts, seeing presentations of life that are fake, and the dross constantly spewed about absolutely nothing.

Social media is like having the graffiti of every toilet wall in the world all in the same place.

FoxFeatures · 07/01/2026 14:34

The amount of navel gazing that goes on with some people is insane. I’m an instagram virgin and bloody glad I am too.

BettysRoasties · 07/01/2026 14:44

So basically they are just telling the world they used to be under the influence all the time but are cutting back.
Nice.

I wish some local residents could be weed curious 😂

Also Nos curious.

maybe speed curious

the list goes on.

I’ll think it over with a glass of gin later 😂🧐
