Coats make me mad- is anyone else like this?

I find coats (especially bulky winter ones) make me irationally angry.

I hate the fact that a person needs so many of them for different scenarios and they take up so much space. They look untidy.

I hate how some outfits don't fit under a coat so you get the horrid bulky armpit or sleeves caught halfway up your coat sleeves sensations.

I'm short so I feel like coats just make me look dumpy (even more of an issue now that I'm a bit overweight hmph)

My husband bought two new coats at the weekend and though they are lovely I just would rather they didn't exist. As soon as we got in in the house after buying them I had a silly disagreement with him which I now realise was due to the stress that the coats caused me! (The disagreement wasn't actually about the coats!!!)

Is anyone else like this?
I have sensory issues (e.g. misophonia) and my reaction to coats is similar to my reaction to that so I wonder if it is connected. But I don't even have to be wearing the damn things! Just looking at a coat hung up makes me stressed/panic/angry!

Hoping to find I'm not the only one 😁

I get very stressed about coats too. As a supply teacher I seem to need many different ones, for different schools and settings, in rain, snow and ice, and as I’m big they are obvs too! I feel like I’m sinking under the weight of them!

thebabessavedme · 11/01/2026 12:12

I'm with you OP, I bloody hate the feeling of being all bundled up, I can't stand anything tight on my neck or my cuffs, It all makes me sooooo angry. My Dh has been known to say 'don't go near mum, she has a coat on' and they all know what he means.

BackwaterBob · 11/01/2026 13:47

I love hearing about peoples irrational hatreds.

Coats take up too much room I agree. But that’s because I buy too many. I must hate myself.

I am short with big boobs, and puffer coats make me look like a weeble.

Roll on the warmer weather.

Then we will get all the summer haters on here moaning that they can't wear their oversized jumpers because it is too hot.

What they don't realise is that if you carry more weight than you want to you won't look any slimmer in your oversized jumper than in a cool cotton shirt.

soupyspoon · 11/01/2026 17:10

The vote has finished but you are DDDDDNBU

Im constantly furious at coats. The space they take, the fact that there are no hooks in toilets to hang them from (went in 5 different toilets today, not a hook in one of them), no where to put them when in a cafe/pub/restaurant, hoods just blow off your head, what is the point of them. You cant even clean the bloody things properly.

soupyspoon · 11/01/2026 17:11

Oh and washing hands while in the loo (when out and about) massive coat sleeve in the way, so to wash or not to wash my hands.

I do think you can refine the number of coats you need. Two, or possibly three, should be enough to cover all situations. Get a lighter weight raincoat that is big enough for plenty of layers on colder days. And then one that is smart enough for other occasions.

I have just walked to the overstuffed closet where my coats and cold weather jackets hang, counted them up, and laughed hollowly at this suggestion. I don't even fit into a couple of them any longer but seem to be under a curse which prevents me throwing them away! Whimper.

Good god, I must have about 5 leather jackets alone, plus 2 faux fur, one is casual, one is 'posh', then 3 smart wool coats, then 1 casual long wool coat, then 1 long hippyish wool coat, then water proof coats, then puffer, then a coastal type casual coat/jacket, then various waterproof jackets.

I want to look good, I like my outfits to look put together.

I don't own a coat because of these exact reasons. I bloody hate them. I'd rather be cold. I wear a hat and gloves and a big warm scarf if I have to be out in the cold for more than a short while. Coats are a nightmare. I get SO hot in them. Put one on to go out of the house and sit in the freezing car to drive to the supermarket. Then within 10 minutes of shopping, I'm utterly sweltering and feeling panicky. Ugh.

Do you never spend any length of time outside in winter? Do you never go for a walk?

I hate being cold. It makes me utterly miserable, but I refuse to stay inside on a cold but bright day. A bracing walk (wearing a warm coat, hat, scarf and gloves) around a local reservoir really blows the cobwebs away.

Edited

I go for a walk every day. I put a hoodie on with the scarf et al. I walk briskly and am soon very warm.
I don't ever need to dress formally so don't need a posh coat.
I use an umbrella and the above warm things if it rains.
I dash quickly from place to place if it's bitterly fucking freezing like lately in the south east.
i just don't need one.

Unlike OP, however, I don’t think you hate coats!

Itiswhysofew · 11/01/2026 21:16

I've got so many coats. They're my thing. However, when the warmer weather comes, I do like the lighter feeling you get without them.

Heartofglass12345 · 11/01/2026 21:17

I hate coats and I live in wales 😭

RampantIvy · 11/01/2026 21:43

I live on the edge of the Pennines. If I didn't own a coat I wouldn't leave the house for 6 months.

PistachioCornflakes · 11/01/2026 21:59

I have so many as I feel the old and hate to get wet, but also hate to feel bulky or restrained and get too hot as well. Sure I'd be better naked. There is never the perfect coat.
I abhor shopping malls, but the one beauty of them is you can walk round without a coat. On the high street my coat is off in the shop and then back on again outside and rinse and repeat.

Bimblebombles · 11/01/2026 22:02

Hang them all up in the garage or keep them in your car! I took them all out of the house one year when getting house ready for estate agent photographs and I liked it so much I kept them there.

Not the garage, they will end up with spiders in the sleeves 😱

CleanSkin · 11/01/2026 22:54

Unfortunately I have just discovered the joy of coats. Combine that with an excellent local tkmaxx & the we’re getting into doors-won’t-close territory.

I do hate coats, I already posted that, they drive me barmy with the storage, the size of them, no where to hang them when out in toilets or cafes or whatever, sleeves get all wet washing your hands.

But Im also always cold, always cold, so I need a coat and I want to have a nice coat or jacket for various outfits and occasions.
