Coats make me mad- is anyone else like this?

I find coats (especially bulky winter ones) make me irationally angry.

I hate the fact that a person needs so many of them for different scenarios and they take up so much space. They look untidy.

I hate how some outfits don't fit under a coat so you get the horrid bulky armpit or sleeves caught halfway up your coat sleeves sensations.

I'm short so I feel like coats just make me look dumpy (even more of an issue now that I'm a bit overweight hmph)

My husband bought two new coats at the weekend and though they are lovely I just would rather they didn't exist. As soon as we got in in the house after buying them I had a silly disagreement with him which I now realise was due to the stress that the coats caused me! (The disagreement wasn't actually about the coats!!!)

Is anyone else like this?
I have sensory issues (e.g. misophonia) and my reaction to coats is similar to my reaction to that so I wonder if it is connected. But I don't even have to be wearing the damn things! Just looking at a coat hung up makes me stressed/panic/angry!

Hoping to find I'm not the only one 😁

Was so excited at this thread I woke my husband up to show him 😂 we are perpetually arguing about coats as he thinks I'm crazy to hate them as much as I do so had to show him it's not just me! I'm also a strong sock hater for what it's worth, the moment I'm home it's off with any excessive layers

I’m with you on this! I hate them - too many are needed if they’re going to be suitable for different clothes and occasions, they take too much cupboard space, make an annoying rustling sound if they’re waterproof, they’re awkward in the car, too hot once in a shop and a massive pain in the arse.

I look stupid in this extreme cold because my top layer is a thick roll neck jumper so I appear underdressed. I’m warm though because underneath it I’ve got thermals, two T-shirts and another thin jumper! Coats can get to fuck.

AllIdoistidyup · 07/01/2026 17:30

YANBU. Pain in the arse. 2 of mine are too long for the wardrobe so live on the newel post. You can't wash waterproof ones easily. Stuff gets left in the pockets. And I get really hot so end up carrying mine anyway!

Duckchops · 07/01/2026 18:07

Same re coats. Also shoes. And my hair. I loathe having hair

Badly fitting clothes too, but when you find something that fits well (increasingly difficult), oh, the joy!

singthing · 07/01/2026 18:22

I cannot stand parka coats which have those drawstring middles. I have never seen anyone look like anything other than a lumpy sack of potatoes.

Even worse when they have that triangular point at the back with another little completely pointless string.

whatcanthematterbe81 · 07/01/2026 18:25

I’ve got 12 coats at the min. Some are jackets but I just LOVE coats and need a few different ones for different outfits. Same goes for boots. Way too many pairs but I just bloody love them

DiscoBeat · 07/01/2026 18:33

We bought an enormous French oak wardrobe (very cheap on eBay!) for the hall for all the enormous coats and things. I don't like bulky jumpers and bulky coats but sometimes it's necessary, although I love my long gilet that I bought recently. It has a padded collar but no sleeves.

RampantIvy · 07/01/2026 18:56

I don't hate coats, but I dislike the need for them.

In warm weather I love to slip on a pair of sandals and I am ready to leave the house. In winter I have to get bundled up in a scarf, hat, coat, gloves and boots and it is a faff.

LaurieFairyCake · 07/01/2026 19:03

God, coats are my favourite creatures. I’ve got about 15.

Frankly it’s because you’ve put on weight, I used to hate them too when I weighed a LOT more. In fact I would try to go out without coats all the time trusting my internal padding would keep me warm 😬

lose weight ? <ducks> 😂

BurntBroccoli · 07/01/2026 19:17

I could have posted this! I wore my winter parka type coat for the first time the other day and it’s just so restrictive and uncomfortable. I’ve been wearing lots of layers and a thick jumper plus scarf which is lovely and comfy but not waterproof alas!

I also have mesophonia and I absolutely hate labels. They are snipped off any clothing immediately.

Definitely a sensory thing.

icouldholditwithacobweb · 07/01/2026 19:17

I hate coats too. I find them way too restrictive. I wear a long padded gilet most of the time, which I love because it's toasty but I have freedom of movement (mostly) in it. Is it stylish? No. Do I give a crap? Also no. Comfort wins out for me.

mcmuffin22 · 07/01/2026 19:35

I love a coat but when it gets warm enough to ditch them it feels like a really nice event. My ideal weather is hot enough to wear sandals and not have to even think about a jumper.

I totally agree with you.

Fiftyandme · 07/01/2026 20:08

Yup.

rafeal · 07/01/2026 20:27

I like coats but yes they take up so much room. I feel I have too many and I still find myself feeling I don’t have the right coat sometimes.

Newname71 · 07/01/2026 20:31

I own one coat and his has to be minus degrees before I’ll wear it!! I feel like I’m being strangled. I just wear t shirts for most of the year but in the current climate I will give in and put a jumper on!!
They always say at work “it must be cold new name has a coat on”
Onw work colleague says she feels cold just looking at me 😂

I have sensory processing disorder and OP I FEEL YOU, YOU ARE SEEN!

I’m indifferent to coats but I have stripped down to my underwear randomly in the car because I was going to murder someone if I had to be uncomfortable in my clothes for a second longer. Putting deodorant on nearly brings me to tears. I have to walk around topless for 1/2 an hour minimum while it dries in.

Seeing someone dressed but with wet hair makes me furious. How can anyone stand that sensation? What’s wrong with them? Do people not feel things? 😭😭😭

I have wavy hair and regularly am fully dressed, bit of makeup on and good to go but my hair is wet because it’s still air drying .
Although in winter I will speed that up with a diffuser or will wait till hair is 70% dry before heading out .
late spring through summer and early autumn I have been known to be out and about with it very damp

Daftypants · 11/01/2026 09:46

i hear you OP , I do have coats because where I live I’d be cold without one .
Most of mine are very old because I can’t find anything that fits , looks decent on me, isn’t too hot , isn’t too restrictive.
I am small and a size anything from an 8 to a 12 depending on where it’s from and the fit .
These coats that look like I have a duvet round me are ridiculous .
I have a dog to walk so need a mix of waterproof and it needs to be warm, but not too warm , and lightweight.
Plus you never know what the weather is going to do and how warm it will be at your destination.
One day we needed to run errands at a mall a fair distance from us and the entire time I was there , even wearing a coat ..I was cold and miserable , felt ill .
Another outing I carried my coat

Gettingbysomehow · 11/01/2026 09:53

My coats take up all the space in my spare room wardrobe and I need that space.
I live on my own so they are all mine. To add insult to injury I never wear any of them. I just layer up. They are too bulky to drive in and make me too hot.

This made me laugh. I don't have sensory issues yet wet deodorant makes me physically sick and I cannot put any clothing on until its dry. I hop about doing the drying dance. I find Mitchum drys the fastest so I use that. And God forbid my hair gets stuck in the wet patch....Id freak.

Thehandinthecookiejar · 11/01/2026 10:13

I have 5 coat and 2 jackets. I used to have loads more but in my heart of hearts I longed for a go-to coat per season and maybe a smarter one for going out so I whittled it down. Had plenty to choose from lol.

Why not donate them to a clothing bank?

Branleuse · 11/01/2026 10:25

I struggle more with coats being menopausal now, and my temperature regulation is crap.
I don't like anything bulky or artificial as it makes me too hot.
I've discovered the joy of a practical down gilet or lightweight down jacket and a wool/cashmere jumper underneath.
It seems to keep me warm but not hot, and it's much easier to manage temperate changes from outdoors to indoors too.

hohahagogo · 11/01/2026 10:30

I don’t have “so many” problem solved.

i have a day to day coat ideal for use in the car, a waterproof jacket that lives in the garage mostly for summer use, a warm waterproof coat in the cupboard with the electricity meter and a wool formal coat that lives in the excess and weird clothing cupboard upstairs (with ball gown, wedding dress etc) for funerals, formal events and remembrance parade. Really not an issue, my day to day coat is the only one on the hook by the door. There are other garments under jacket category but they are motorbike related and live in the garage

hohahagogo · 11/01/2026 10:32

@LucyMonth I think you need help! You would hate me, I always head out with wet hair as blow drying doesn’t suit it, it’s curly
