Coats make me mad- is anyone else like this?

I find coats (especially bulky winter ones) make me irationally angry.

I hate the fact that a person needs so many of them for different scenarios and they take up so much space. They look untidy.

I hate how some outfits don't fit under a coat so you get the horrid bulky armpit or sleeves caught halfway up your coat sleeves sensations.

I'm short so I feel like coats just make me look dumpy (even more of an issue now that I'm a bit overweight hmph)

My husband bought two new coats at the weekend and though they are lovely I just would rather they didn't exist. As soon as we got in in the house after buying them I had a silly disagreement with him which I now realise was due to the stress that the coats caused me! (The disagreement wasn't actually about the coats!!!)

Is anyone else like this?
I have sensory issues (e.g. misophonia) and my reaction to coats is similar to my reaction to that so I wonder if it is connected. But I don't even have to be wearing the damn things! Just looking at a coat hung up makes me stressed/panic/angry!

Hoping to find I'm not the only one 😁

You would hate my coat collection, I have loads. But I think it's appropriate to have loads of coats if you live a certain lifestyle. I am outdoors a lot, own a dog, climb mountains and camp all year round. I walk in all weathers. I need a range a coats to deal with different scenarios. I also travel abroad to different locations to and take part in various outdoor activities. It's the same with footwear or any other outdoor equipment. You need the right gear for the environment you are in, or literally people can become hypothermic and die up mountain!! It's unreasonable to expect people to have a one coat works in all situations situation

Zanatdy · 06/01/2026 15:17

Or you could be my 17yr DD who refuses to wear one. Even today at -6 when she left the house!

henlake7 · 06/01/2026 15:23

In general I love my coats....its just the puffer style ones I hate.
But Im a cold soul so after a certain point I have to resort to lagging myself like an old boiler.
I mean I like the warmth, just not loving the feeling of walking around wrapped in my duvet!

WarmGreyHare · 06/01/2026 15:27

Annoyed by the sensation of wearing them and annoyed at the space they take up and how much they cost, all fine.
Upset by them to the point that seeing your DHs new coats and having them in the house gives you actual anxiety and makes you pick a fight with him? No, that's not typical, and id say is something worth thinking about.
If you have issues with the noise of people chewing.... Is it the rustling you get from costs you don't like? Do you feel the same about all costs or is it those with a nylon type outer layer? Ie would a wool coat or a thick fleece make you feel the same?

BashfulClam · 06/01/2026 15:29

I love my coats. They don’t take up too much room as I keep them on some books on the back of the spare room door so they are ‘hidden away’

Oftenaddled · 06/01/2026 15:31

I buy one light smart hooded waterproof coat with hood every year or two on vinted and that covers everything.

Layers below if needed, not if not, hood up if wet, down if dry. Coats can be lovely so I can see why people would buy more but I don't see an actual need to have them cluttering up your living space. Put some away in a wardrobe?

RudolphTheReindeer · 06/01/2026 15:41

I don't wear a coat unless it's less than 5 degrees and even then only if I have too or I'd die of hypothermia. Hate them.

LucyMonth · 06/01/2026 16:00

I have sensory processing disorder and OP I FEEL YOU, YOU ARE SEEN!

I’m indifferent to coats but I have stripped down to my underwear randomly in the car because I was going to murder someone if I had to be uncomfortable in my clothes for a second longer. Putting deodorant on nearly brings me to tears. I have to walk around topless for 1/2 an hour minimum while it dries in.

Seeing someone dressed but with wet hair makes me furious. How can anyone stand that sensation? What’s wrong with them? Do people not feel things? 😭😭😭

I often have wet hair when dressed. I don't use a hairdryer, it really damages your hair. Best to let it dry naturally for hair health, especially if you have very long hair like me. Fair enough if you prefer to dry your hair before getting dressed, but why does it make you furious if someone else has wet hair? Unless they are dripping their hair all over you, it doesn't interfere with you at all in real terms

I hate it when your out in a coat and then you go into a shop and its warm in there. You can get too hot.

PiIIock · 06/01/2026 19:23

I went out without a coat today in the snow. I wore layers under my jumper and trousers. Only my hands were cold.

I agree with the points raised but YABU because you don’t have to wear a coat.

Elsvieta · 06/01/2026 19:53

Keep them in the car?

You don't need a lot really. You could just have two, one really warm one and another for spring / autumn.

Mandoidi · 06/01/2026 14:44

What have I dictated that they do?

no but you are irrationally pissed of by your DH's coat ownership

X123x321X · 06/01/2026 21:13

I understand OP. I have sensory issues and can only wear certain combinations of clothes. It's a bit like claustrophobia and doesn't make any sense. I was the same as a child. Perhaps it's unreasonable to some people, but whatever.

I also have a dread of butter in some combinations of food. My father was the same, and so is my cousin. I'm not ND in case that's relevant. We just have a weird gene. 🤣

thenightsky · 06/01/2026 21:42

I'm furious that they discontinued Sure Quick Dry roll on. It really did dry quickly. These days I actually put the hairdryer on cool and blast it at my pits until bone dry.

Chattanoogachoo · 06/01/2026 22:04

I've worn a fleece gilet with matching heavy fleece recently and I've been amazed at the warmth of the combination. It certainly feels warmer than most of my coats.

asrl78 · 06/01/2026 22:13

I have two coats but the hi-vis one hardly gets worm. The Gortex jacket is a one size fits all so is worn whenever the weather dictates it is needed for comfort.

HorrorAndHaagenDazs · 06/01/2026 15:01

I love coats, and need them up in Scotland.

Socks make me want to die though so I do get where youre coming from OP.

The socks thing is so funny. My 9 year old hates socks. First thing she does when she comes home is rip them off and launch them across the room. I absolutely hate being in bare feet. I don’t understand people who are comfortable in their bare feet.

Socks are the best, especially at this time of year.

I had a housemate who had no end of coats. We couldn't actually open the door properly because the coat rack was so stuffed with her coats!

You don't need that many. One smart, one casual / waterproof. That's it. That will cover you in all scenarios.

Well, there's the riding jacket, and the waterproof riding coat. Then there's the cycling jacket, two actually, one lightweight one medium weight. Then the smart wool prom coat(s). Then two full length wool coats. And a microfiber, and a ski jacket, and a full length quilted coat. There's also a wax jacket, a quilted gilet and a velvet coat. Also a waterproof cycling jacket and I think I may have forgotten a couple. How can you just have two coats?

Most people don't ride and ski though. Sure, that could make a difference. Never wore a special cycling jacket and don't need wax and velvet and quilted and microfiber - nice things to have but not necessary.

I'm here for the solutions.
I,m on board with gilets ; anything else ?

MollyButton · 07/01/2026 06:07

I have very few coats. But then again I now don’t get cold until about 0C and it rarely gets that cold where I live. For example I went for a country walk in just a jumper yesterday.

TheLyricalDanceFlap · 07/01/2026 10:15

Coats are a faff YANBU. I never seem to have the right one. One of my pet hates is in winter when you need a coat for outdoors but shops/cafes/bars etc are boiling so you have to carry the coat indoors.

TheLyricalDanceFlap · 07/01/2026 10:25

MightyGoldBear · 06/01/2026 11:38

I've ditched handbags entirely and only have a backpack. The freedom!

Backpacks are not freeing! They make your clothes bunch up, you have to keep all the useful stuff in your pockets otherwise you’re taking it off all the time, I always feel at risk of knocking something over with one and nine times out of ten something inside it with rattle, clang or rustle as you walk along which is like torture.
We were in a long queue at a theme park and the Mum of the family in front had a back pack, it was up and down, on and off, open and shut, the zips were jangling. I wanted to launch it into the bushes.

socks1107 · 07/01/2026 10:34

Yes I am like this. I’ve found an amazing coat this year, warm, short in length and not puffer from marks. I wore it in Eastern Europe last month and it was a great coat!! Normally I’m overstimulated in them but this one’s ok
