Coats make me mad- is anyone else like this?

I find coats (especially bulky winter ones) make me irationally angry.

I hate the fact that a person needs so many of them for different scenarios and they take up so much space. They look untidy.

I hate how some outfits don't fit under a coat so you get the horrid bulky armpit or sleeves caught halfway up your coat sleeves sensations.

I'm short so I feel like coats just make me look dumpy (even more of an issue now that I'm a bit overweight hmph)

My husband bought two new coats at the weekend and though they are lovely I just would rather they didn't exist. As soon as we got in in the house after buying them I had a silly disagreement with him which I now realise was due to the stress that the coats caused me! (The disagreement wasn't actually about the coats!!!)

Is anyone else like this?
I have sensory issues (e.g. misophonia) and my reaction to coats is similar to my reaction to that so I wonder if it is connected. But I don't even have to be wearing the damn things! Just looking at a coat hung up makes me stressed/panic/angry!

Hoping to find I'm not the only one 😁

I'm perimenopausal and get soooo hot! On days when a coat/jacket is needed I end up a hot sweaty mess. Or end up carrying it which is just a pain.

Plus, I dont drive so my bags wreak them because they get rubbed in the same places constantly. My main coat is an ugly but practical Seasalt one which has gone bobbly because of my work rucksack. My previous one was a beautiful wool coat but that got a hole in it within months despite me purposely switching my bags.

AND! There is nothing more depressing than seeing a sea of people all wearing black, grey or other dark coats in the rain on the commute home on a winter evening when its getting dark.

Hellohelga · 06/01/2026 12:37

My mum is like you so she only wears gilets. I love my coats though and think they look nice on. Maybe you haven’t found the right coat yet. Should be not too tight and not too heavy. Also get rid of batwing sleeves and baggy/lumpy jumpers.

I had a housemate who had no end of coats. We couldn't actually open the door properly because the coat rack was so stuffed with her coats!

You don't need that many. One smart, one casual / waterproof. That's it. That will cover you in all scenarios.

What about a warm one? I dog walk in the summer in a thin waterproof. In the winter I need a thick waterproof.

I also have a wool peacoat - semi formal eg parents evening
A slim wool three quarter length - drinks, lunch, theatre
A long wool coat that fits a bulky jumper - cold city breaks eg NYC/scandinavia
A long anorak - work, plus lunchtime walk
A puffer - cold but dry dog walks
Smart jacket - job interviews, summer theatre
Shackets - summer, pub.

Plus a few I've forgotten I'm sure!

OP i hear you. Except I think the problem is that men's coats take up more space!

Aaaaargh coats. I have a lovely thick padded coat with fur edged hood. But the hood comes down over my eyes. And the zip sticks all the time. It’s a real event when I manage to zip it all the way up or down in one go.

Then there’s my lighter coat, a Regatta. It’s a lovely coat, well designed, the hood has a peak which is brilliant for keeping the rain of your face, but it has a habit of randomly unzipping itself from the bottom.

What is it with fucking zips?

There's a way of solving this - the fur on the hood is supposed to be turned inward so it sits on your face. This means the hood doesn't blow off in the wind or cover your eyes, and that the fur keeps your head and face warm.

I too love a good coat, each one has a scarf and gloves that go with them and are hung on matching wooden hangers in hallway
Its a mood thing with me like perfume - I wake up and think which coat and fragrance is appropriate and will make me happy today

QuickPeachPoet · 06/01/2026 13:16

You are more than welcome to not like coats and not want to own them or wear one yourself.
However you can't dictate what your DH or others do. He wants to keep warm and rightly so.

dailyconniptions · 06/01/2026 13:19

I definitely agree. They are irritating as hell. Plus, I work in a supermarket and I notice people with absolutely grimy, filthy coats who never wash them. Also, the smell from many of them..gross.

OriginalUsername2 · 06/01/2026 13:21

I hate having to carry them around when the weather can’t make its mind up or when you go into a shop with the heating on.

FlyingApple · 06/01/2026 13:33

I bought a down coat that is warm enough and light enough that I only need a t shirt underneath and that's helped me so much.

ManyPigeons · 06/01/2026 14:04

You simply don’t have the right coat I’m afraid. I have a really beautiful wool coat, long, mostly waterproof, large enough any outfit fits under and warm without being sweaty.

Only downside is it doesn’t have a hood but I take a hooded scarf out with me. It’s the only coat I wear and I get compliments on it everywhere I go. Honestly the best buy ever for £75.

Greedybilly · 06/01/2026 14:09

I bought an expensive Fatface coat but it drove me nuts as I was so hot and annoyed every time I put it on.
I didn't look like the women in the advert who was NOT redfaced and seething:)

ThisIsAGlobalPlayerOriginalPodcast · 06/01/2026 14:10

I don’t have the same visceral reaction but they irk me for the exact same reasons.

Yeah I make the kid wear coats and then end up carrying them round the shops. Drives me mental.

Soashamed60 · 06/01/2026 14:24

@Mandoidi yes with you here. Luckily we have enough storage for dh many jackets.
I have a big winter coat. I hardly it as most of the time it's just not cold enough for me. I use a pac a mac for waterproof/windproof.
Can't drive in a coat. If I need extra warmth I use a coatigan or fleece.
I think the UK does seem to be getting warmer on the whole so maybe thick winter coats won't be needed as much?

Mandoidi · 06/01/2026 14:32

Thanks guys, glad to know I'm not the only one!
It's gotta be down to my ND traits I'm sure of it.
It simultaneously makes me mad and chuckle- how can I get so cross at a coat 😂

I’m the opposite if anything. Very much a coat person. You do need one for every eventuality and that can be a bit stressful, making sure you do, but it is important to prioritise having the right coats for everything. And try to avoid having outfits that fit poorly under coats - if necessary size up in your coats.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 06/01/2026 14:41

Also you need adequate storage in your house for coats.

It is annoying when the weather can’t make up its mind, but that’s why you need a range of coats. Or if needs be, wear the lighter coat and make up for it with layers underneath that can be removed and put in your bag.

The annoying thing is when public spaces like trains and shops are heated to a furnace when it’s cold outside (so you’re wearing a coat and layers, which you then have to take off) and then chilled to freezing in the summer when you’re in a t shirt - you can’t always remember you might need a cardigan!

What have I dictated that they do?

I hate clothes in general as most of them don’t fit me properly. At least I can hide in coats and get away with not wearing something nice underneath if I’m just going shopping or something.

CarrotSeeds · 06/01/2026 14:50

You are all weird 🤣. I LOVE coats. And nice handbags. And have dozens of both 🥰

Deadringer · 06/01/2026 14:59

I always wear a coat or a jacket because I hate handbags, I need pockets for my stuff, so I like a decent jacket. I don't like long coats, or very warm ones though, and I hate hats and gloves. I try not to out if its cold!

HorrorAndHaagenDazs · 06/01/2026 15:01

I love coats, and need them up in Scotland.

Socks make me want to die though so I do get where youre coming from OP.

chuggabo · 06/01/2026 15:03

What do you need to be perfectly tidy for? You dont live in a lab (do you?) . Your house just needs to hold your stuff, and coats are just a small part of your stuff.

Brefugee · 06/01/2026 15:03

if they are taking up too much space: you have too many coats and can get rid of some
if they don't fit over the clothes they are supposed to fit over: they are too small, change for a bigger size.

I never drive in a coat - that is just bonkers behaviour.

FlyingApple · 06/01/2026 15:12

Sometimes I look at boys clothes for toddlers and they look so comfy and I don't know why adults have to make it so difficult!
