Replacing crisps

My new year's resolution was to eat less crisps. My empty large doritos bag says I've failed. I love the crunch, the spice salt...

What alternatives are there? Don't dare suggest an apple 🤣

I love crisps a bit too much
Salt and vinegar square
" ". "" Discos
Coop Chardonnay vinegar.
So my substitute is gold star chip shop style pickled onions

I get the bite and can sook on the vinegary goodness.

I used to cook chickpeas in malt vinegar and then sprinkle salt and cook in the oven

My weakness is walkers Cheese and onion and ready salted, although I’ll happily eat my way though the whole multipack. Walkers crisp sandwiches on fresh white bread are amazing too, a terrible easy go to when I was cluster feeding my baby. Sorry I’m probably not helping.

I’ve stopped buying big multipacks like the huge box from Costco as it’s easier to eat my way through it and just get 6 pack so once it’s gone that’s it. I don’t really find crackers and alternatives really help, as I still want my walkers and am wasting the calories on things I don’t really like. I’ve found it easier to restrict how much I have of something I like rather than replace it with something probably only slightly lower or the same calories which just doesn’t hit the mark.

I can't be bothered to rtft but has anyone suggested edemame beans in pods? You can buy them frozen in bags and microwave or boil for 2 mins. They are not crunchy but fiddling about popping the peas out of the pod with your tongue almost makes up for it. As much salt as you add. Full of protein and the texture is oddly satisfying.

PS I have had to go cold turkey on crisps. They are my nemesis. Marmite flavour ones are the worst, I find myself thinking about the next packet while I'm eating the first.

I'm getting lots of crisp recommendations from it . Some stuff I've never heard of

Crispy chickpeas. Drain and rinse them, pat them dry, lightly oil them and add salt and spices, bake in the oven until crispy. Deeeeeelicious!

Blushingm · 07/01/2026 08:58

Salted popcorn?

noodlebugz · 07/01/2026 10:31

I don’t know if they’ve been mentioned already but for the salt and vinegar hit - the kallo salt and vinegar veggie protein cakes are really nice. Strong!

KimberleyClark · 07/01/2026 18:15

Marmite rice cakes are a good snack and low in calories. Though only if you like marmite!

Popcorn. Get yourself a bag of kernels and a popcorn maker. Drizzle a little olive oil and salt/spices over it. Gorgeous, healthy, high on fibre and hardly any calories.

You don't need a popcorn maker!
Use a large pan, bit of oil, (1 tablespoon), kernels in and slam on the lid on a high heat, shaking all the time.
Wait till the explosions mostly die down, sprinkle with salt and put the video on.
(What we used to do for movie night with the kids when skint.)

I love this thread - lots of new crisps to try

Needmorelego · 08/01/2026 11:46

I bought these yesterday but I was a bit disappointed in them.
The flavour was odd.
Probably a good thing because it was a large "share" bag and I didn't have the urge to eat the entire bag at once 😂
