Replacing crisps

My new year's resolution was to eat less crisps. My empty large doritos bag says I've failed. I love the crunch, the spice salt...

What alternatives are there? Don't dare suggest an apple 🤣

Golden Wonder Cheese and Onion Crisps, I can live on them.

RainBow725 · 06/01/2026 19:26

Italian breadsticks - not cheap but you don’t need too many to get the crunch satisfaction.

Rice cakes? Thought I put cream cheese on mine while it probably no better

Rice cakes are worse, even without cream cheese.

I had some chestnuts left over from Christmas, so I pierced them and put them in the oven while dinner was cooking. Got them out, peeled off the shells and with a dab of salt they were delicious. Crunchy, lower in calories but quite good for you. Better than crisps anyway.

ChapmanFarm · 06/01/2026 19:51

Can you just buy smaller sized packets?

Something like Salt and Vinegar Discos still has the flavour hit (too much so for me) but not as massive as as a bag Doritos.

Trying to avoid something you want often makes you get more obsessed. I'd just try and cut down the portion initially.

I like Skips because they are fairly low calorie but I still feel like I've had a treat.

The rice thins are nice but they put them in plastic trays that mean you eat the lot!

I slightly boil potato skins, dry them then tiny bit of olive oil and seasoning them. Cook them in the actifryer until crispy. Amazing

These are just homemade crisps!

ElizabethVonArnim · 06/01/2026 20:26

Accept no substitutes! However, I do actually like eating spinach from a bag. It’s good if you have a dip alongside eg soy sauce mixed with sesame oil and rice vinegar, or palm sugar syrup with bits of lemon or dry roasted peanuts chopped very small.

Isobel201 · 06/01/2026 20:43

I have quavers - less than 100 calories per pack and just nice to have something crunchy but not many calories.

TessTickle0 · 06/01/2026 20:51

I love crisps and wine,Don't know which I would struggle to give up more, so I don't try, instead I intend to cut down.
Torres crisps are the best!!!

OneWildBiscuit · 06/01/2026 20:59

Shores Seaweed Crisps are absolutely gorgeous and considerably less naughty than potato crisps.

The salt and balsamic vinegar ones are astonishingly yum.

Nancylancy · 06/01/2026 21:19

I watched a thing the other day about air fryers, and I know you said not an apple...
But she just sliced an apple very thinly, added spices (cinnamon etc) and used the dehydrator function to make crisps!
Presumably you could do this with any other fruit or veg and see what takes your fancy, but it would still have crunch, you could add your own salt or spices, and it's much healthier!

Tbh it's made me think about upgrading my air fryer!

Tresd · 06/01/2026 21:20

buy small packs instead of large?

SpringsOnTheWay · 06/01/2026 21:24

I fucking love crisps.
I eat crackers instead, I don’t put cheese or butter on (took a while to get used to them plain). Just baked boring crackers. Cheap, low fat and easy to get. I found Corn crackers are better than plain rice cakes.

the ryvita salt and vinegar crackers are immense, but not as low calorie.

Rodneynotdave · 06/01/2026 21:42

Pitta bread cut into strips, drizzled with olive oil, covered in salt and pepper and Grilled for a few minutes until crispy 😋

Sunshine1500 · 06/01/2026 22:05

Nothing comes to crisps but I sometimes replace them with lentil chips or nuts

Sunshine1500 · 06/01/2026 22:07

Or I buy multi packs instead of share packs to help cut down

Ilovemyshed · 06/01/2026 22:13

Take the skin off a butternut squash with a speed peeler, spray with light oil and sprinkle with seasoning. S&P is fine, chilli or paprika for extra.
Roast for a while.

Same with parsnip peelings.

Thesummer · 06/01/2026 22:21

Wasabi peas
Pumpkin/sunflower seeds (although they are very calorie dense)
A couple of poppadoms? Not the deep fried ones but the ones you can microwave.
Salted popcorn

PartySuziPlease · 06/01/2026 22:29

Poppadums

socks1107 · 06/01/2026 22:39

I have popcorn as my crisp swap

Curiouscase · 06/01/2026 22:40

this thread has made me add 2 x packs of lentil chips to my Ocado order, plus kallo beetroot crackers!

I think the lentil things are probably just as much UPF as crisps but are definitely less greasy with more protein…

celticprincess · 06/01/2026 22:40

According to this evening’s what not to eat that I saw about 10 minutes of his recommendation was basically mixed nuts. Not great if you have a nut allergy though!! He also said popcorn was also more healthy as long as it wasn’t heavily sweetened or salted.

MNTouristhere · 06/01/2026 23:12

Carrot / cucumber sticks and hummus are quite filling and tasty. Make a box of them up in fridge to pick at.

Wearescrewed · 06/01/2026 23:19

These are good

I eat gherkins when I need a bit of salty crunch! You can only eat so many and they are really low calorie!
