Replacing crisps

My new year's resolution was to eat less crisps. My empty large doritos bag says I've failed. I love the crunch, the spice salt...

What alternatives are there? Don't dare suggest an apple 🤣

Don't dispair!
Tesco Finest Sea Salt and Black Pepper Crisps come out as 'Good' (72/100) in the app Yuka. A bit better than Hovis Seed Sensations bread!

That sounds interesting. Could you put Tyrells Naked Crisps in the app for me please?
I've always hoped they are not to bad as crisps go. Would be good to have a green light though!

Cornichons: Mini pickled gherkins

Make a salty, limey, gingery salad with shredded red cabbage and carrot and eat forkfuls

Oblomov25 · 05/01/2026 20:01

I too adore crisps. Especially salty ones. With a glass of wine!
They say that (craving salty) shows dehydration from the day before.

Doyouthinktheyknow · 05/01/2026 20:02

I was a lifelong crisp addict, multiple packets a day but I haven’t had a packet for months!

I slowly reduced as part of an overhaul of my diet and eventually I started to realize I was enjoying other healthier foods more and I genuinely don’t miss crisps at all.

Occasionally when I do nights I will have rice cakes, the kallo sweet chilli and salt and vinegar lentil cakes do remind me of crisps but less UPF.

I think cold turkey is probably the only way for a crisp addict but you have to want it. I’ve lost 4 and a half stone and feel great so low UPF is the way forward for me and no crisps is part of that.

Kale coated with olive oil , rosemary and salt then roasted. It's delicious but actually not sure it's healthier....

Sorry, I have to scan the bar code.of the product. (free version of Yuka)
I have in the past scanned these Tyrells Simply Sea Salts, but that probably won't help. But when I next go to the shops later this week, if I remember, I will look out for them.

Or air-popped popcorn

This ! You can add spices if you want. Popcorn is really good for you too

Tin of chickpeas, dry them off in kitchen roll... add seasoning of choice, you can use fajita seasoning or similar with a few sprays of fry lite or similar then in the airfryer for 10 mins or until suitably crunchy, these were my go to snack when doing slimming world

Mustreadabook · 05/01/2026 20:49

Why? Is it for health/weight loss? I make sure that I don't have any of the giant bags in the house because I could easily eat a whole one, but one small multipack size bag of walkers is about 100 calories, so a fairly light snack that is very satisfying and filling. Perhaps set yourself a 'ration' of crisps that you are allowed, and only have bags that size available, rather than trying to eat none and then gobbling a huge bag.

Chickenhorse · 05/01/2026 20:52

Interesting I don’t boil mine, just thoroughly wash them and then air fry them. They are lovely and crispy. What does boiling them do?

dottieautie · 05/01/2026 21:00

It took me a very long time to realise eating crisps was less about the flavour or being hungry and everything about the crunch. It’s a form of autistic stimming and I’ve tried everything to replicate it and nothing works after the first bite. Raw carrots are close but too sweet. The potato skins thing above sounds worth a try though. Good luck op

ChinFluff46 · 05/01/2026 21:01

Bettysnow · 05/01/2026 17:54

I slightly boil potato skins, dry them then tiny bit of olive oil and seasoning them. Cook them in the actifryer until crispy. Amazing

Is that not essentially just making crisps? 🤣

Or is this much lower fat?

ChinFluff46 · 05/01/2026 21:05

For crunch, celery sticks are good. Not the same obviously but the nom nom crunch is there.

Bread sticks are probably healthier, but I can devour a whole packet of those as I like the crunch.

Dried apple with cinnamon is nice, kind of chewy though.

ChinFluff46 · 05/01/2026 21:06

Sugar snap peas are quite good as long as they are fresh and crispy.

sunshine244 · 05/01/2026 21:15

Why? Well I eat far too many. I'm fine if they aren't in the house but have to walk past a corner shop while doing the school run and I swear it has a beam pulling me to the giant crisp pack section 🤣

Although actually that's only partially true. My kids crisps are in the house and I rarely if ever eat them. What I crave is the extreme tastes of spicy or strong salt and vinegar.

My son's OT said that craving spicy/salty/crunchy food is common in people with ADHD due to the dopamine hit. I definitely crave them when stressed so it makes sense. Chomping on some celery won't cut it but I'll try the chickpea idea.

I still eat crisps, just the single bags of low cal ones rather than a big bag of really fattening ones. Something like skips or quavers are about 80 cals - about the same as a serving of grapes and much less than a slice of toast or the alternatives people are suggesting on here.

Even though there's not loads in them once I've eaten a bag I feel like the crisp 'urge' has been satisfied and don't want another, whereas with a big "sharing" (fat chance!) bag or tube of pringles I just keep going.

kpopdemonhunterz · 05/01/2026 21:18

Has this thread made anyone else want crisps so bad?

I was going to suggest the same thing.

They’re nothing like crisps but something about them hits a similar spot for me.

familyissues12345 · 05/01/2026 21:23

DH has given up crisps and instead is having a tiny bowl of graze nibbly things instead. He finds he doesn’t need many, they keep his fingers busy and they replicate the crunch well

FunnyOrca · 05/01/2026 21:24

Turmerictea · 05/01/2026 18:01

You'll hate me but I eat bags of radishes like crisps - same satisfying crunch!
Also peppers like apples

Maybe try adding some salt to your main meals if you're craving salt?

Have you tried roasting the radishes? No oil or seasoning needed. The flavour is amazing!

@sunshine244 I would suggest:

  • popcorn
  • breadsticks
  • seaweed
  • pom bears - still crisps but less calories?
  • or allow yourself crisps but you have to make them from scratch and use oven or air fryer rather than oil
soupyspoon · 06/01/2026 08:22

Chickpeas seem to explode in the airfryer for me

bumphousebump · 06/01/2026 08:51

Yeah it was a stress thing for me. Boss always says he can tell when I was having a bad day at work id be round the corner shop for a big bag of s&v. Or before my husband’s clan turned up en masse….

InfiniteJester · 06/01/2026 09:04

I can eat 16 bags of Monster Munch, they are like a drug to me, so I just don’t buy them. If I get the for DCs, I hide them in my car boot or on top of a wardrobe and label them as “theirs”. I had to do a LOT of work! Replace with anything crunchy - carrots, radishes, raw broccoli, cucumber. Just don’t make them available to yourself.

I have the occasional binge, burn my tongue, and remember how crap they make me feel!

KimberleyClark · 06/01/2026 09:07

How about hummus chips, lentil chips etc.

Falalalalaaaalalalalaaaa · 06/01/2026 09:10

I switched to walkers baked crisps so if I can’t resist the urge then at least it’s not as unhealthy and the packets are small!
