Made the lasagna without the lasagna

Brainfogtothemax · 05/01/2026 13:26

What to do?

Just prepped for dinner, did all the mince with tomatoes, onion etc and made the cheese sauce, boiled some potatoes and went to get the lasagna sheets and don’t have any.
Not feeling 100% so cba going to the shops, how can I make it into a proper meal? I have some pasta I could use instead, but what about the potatoes? Save them for tomorrow 🤷🏻‍♀️

Ooh, I'm thinking you could do this with conchiglie as well - boil til soft enough to carefully flatten with a rolling pin, and then put together like a weird pasta jigsaw puzzle to form lasagne sheets. Even better if you've got farfalle as I reckon they'll flatten to perfect little squares. Fusilli probably no good unless you're willing to individually untwist each one.

Penne would work best, cook, then slice down one side and flatten. Hey presto, mini lasagne sheets.

Or weave cooked spaghetti into flat sheets of spaghetti fabric - would add an interesting texture.

(This thread is bonkers)

The potatoes were to go with the lasagna, my family like some buttery boiled potatoes with it

I don’t think I can slice the potatoes-too soft 😬

I’m fascinated as to why you had boiled the potatoes to go with it when the lasagne was a good 40-50 minutes off being ready since you hadn’t even assembled it yet

JoshLymanSwagger · 05/01/2026 14:55

I’m ringing my mum

Now you're ringing your mum?

Bobiverse · 05/01/2026 14:48

Adding cheese to bechamel makes it a cheese sauce. Bechamel does not have cheee; it’s just a white sauce. The cheese on lasagne is added on top, the sauce is bechamel sauce not cheese sauce.

You’re not making lasagne and neither did your mum.

She added some of the grated cheese on top too and grilled it, some in the sauce, remainder on top

Isn't the mince in a tomatoey sauce? So putting mashed potatoes on top will not make it into a cottage pie! It will be mince ragu with potatoes on top 🤣

Brainfogtothemax · 05/01/2026 14:56

JoshLymanSwagger · 05/01/2026 14:50

The mince with mash on top is a cottage pie.

Use the bechamel sauce which isn't bechamel sauce and pour it over some macaroni or other shaped pasta to make "random shaped pasta" cheese.

I’m not making two dishes 😩

I really don’t know at this point, everything I thought about lasagna since my childhood is a lie, Dh has never queried the boiled potatoes or cheese sauce though
I’m ringing my mum

"I'm ringing my mum" has just made me full on belly laugh for about 5 minutes, thanks OP 🤣🤣🤣

Honestly, it's close enough...especially with all the cheese.

It could be tomorrow's dinner.
Macaroni cheese plus a vegetable.

Do you always struggle to think outside of the box or are you feeling woolly headed because you don't feel well?

AuDHDqueen · 05/01/2026 14:58

I can think of worse problems to have.

make a cottage pie and slam the bechamel in the fridge and make a cauli cheese tomorrow.

AhBiscuits · 05/01/2026 14:51

Use the potatoes to make gnocchi and have a gnocchi bolognaise bake?

How on earth do you make Gnocci, it’s so slimy

TeenLifeMum · 05/01/2026 14:58

Cheese sauce freezes well, save that for another time.

ISpyNoPlumPie · 05/01/2026 14:58

So just to clarify. The final meal selected by the OP is an Italian cottage pie of sorts with the cheese sauce poured over the top like gravy. I think there have been some better suggestions but it’s basically the meal OP planned!

Not if you make it properly

Brainfogtothemax · 05/01/2026 14:47

I’ve taken on the suggestions, I will do the mince with mashed potato on top, then pour the cheese sauce over the top. Don’t know why but it seems a weird dish, no idea what to call it when Dh & Dd ask me

Call it cba lasagna surprise - surprise being there is no lasagna

never know it could be a new thing 🤣

Brainfogtothemax · 05/01/2026 14:58

It's basically mashed potato and flour.

I’m not making two dishes 😩

You're not going to be cooking more food than you already were.
It's the same amount of ingredients, just in 2 different ways and in 2 different pyrex dishes instead of one.

Scampuss · 05/01/2026 14:59

Ragu 'cottage' pie is lovely, good decision @Brainfogtothemax

RampantIvy · 05/01/2026 15:00

I have never ever seen lasagne served with boiled potatoes. In fact, I rarely ever see boiled potatoes served with anything these days. It is always, roast, mash, sauteed or chips.

Is your family Irish @Brainfogtothemax

This is a very good idea, two meals basically sorted bar maybe something on the side. I'm not going to risk making a suggestion as to what given that OP can't fatho eating salad or leafy things in winter.

OP, don't you ever put leftovers in the fridge? I don't understand why you are so thrown by what to do with some excess potatoes - unless your fridge is full, or you should have gone to bed already becausey you aren't well?

Linzi2377 · 05/01/2026 15:00

Slices of bread? 😂😂

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 05/01/2026 15:00

This thread is funny. Boiled potatoes have no place on a lasagne plate - surely it's lasagne, peas or salad depending on the weather, and garlic bread on the side? (All about the double card here tbh.) I put cheese on top, mozzarella and cheddar but not in the white sauce.

JoshLymanSwagger · 05/01/2026 15:01

AhBiscuits · 05/01/2026 14:59

Not flour.
I can't take a discussion of plain v self-raising v spelt.

You'd be better off sewing the conchiglie together, shell by shell. You can use celery string
