Hurray for Venezuela!!

So disappointed but not at all surprised at the reaction from MNetters safe and cosy who have no real idea of what 26 years run by a drug/sex trafficking dictator has been like.

You have no idea.
Reasonable methods of protest have been shut down and punished, elections are a sham. There were not food let alone arms to do a coup.

We needed an outside force. We are not stupid and contrary to comments on the other thread like "Anyone cheering that is as stupid as it is possible to be", we are sceptical but at least now we have a chance.
How dare left wing keyboard warriors be so priveledged to think they know better than people living there.

Hurray!

I think Mumsnetters are far more comfortable with ‘ideals’ being upheld than the reality of what that looks like. But then they don’t live in a dictatorship and Trump is a sexist, so 🤷‍♀️

GingerBeverage · 04/01/2026 20:18

Yes I was one who had absolutely no idea, but have now read up. There are a lot of displaced citizens who I hope will be able to return home in time.

You think you are clever supporting a murderous dictatorship that has ruined my country?
My brother lives on $6 a month. Yes a month.
We now we have oil. Trump has mentioned oil. We do not believe it is entirely from the good of his heart, but at least he has done something to help rescue us.

OP posts:
newmenewwhatever · 04/01/2026 20:28

Trump could not give a shit about the people only the oil.
i really hope there is stability and things vastly improve but it wasn’t done for those reasons and I would be very wary

lljkk · 04/01/2026 20:30

Grenada, El Salvador & Nicaragua have all been "saved" too.
How's it going for them? Are they prosperous nice places to live nowadays, do you think?

Is modern El Salvador what you aspire to be like, OP?

Now that bogeyman Venezuela is taken care of, who next? Cuba? Mexico? Colombia? iran? What do you reckon? I think it's easy to predict: which one has the weakest military/ fewest backers? So that's Cuba, probably, right?

We have been waiting for foreign intervention for over a quarter of a century.
Could it be any worse than what we have endured already? I very much doubt that is even possible.
When Venezuelans are celebrating this, please don't be so big headed to think you know better.

OP posts:
noblegiraffe · 04/01/2026 20:38

If you are Venezuelan then I am not surprised you are celebrating being free from that arsehole and being grateful for someone finally taking action against him. I sincerely hope that it all works out for you and at least now there is a space for hope.

Thank you for your input. I find it rather odd that people that have never lived in that country have such opposing views. As someone whose parents left a country due to communism, I understand the relief of the Venezuelan people. I hope they find peace and overthrow this regime 💐

Not all Venezuelans are celebrating. The ones I know aren’t, but maybe they’re being pessimistic? They seem to be expressing a sort of “out of the frying pan and into the fire” attitude. I really do hope it works out for the best. Everyone should. But yes, I do question how this is going to work out when Trump doesn’t care about the average Venezuelan. One (only one, I admit) of my Venezuelan friends thinks the US will come in, build oil infrastructure, and take all of Venezuela’s oil for itself as “thanks,” in the same way they’re trying to force Ukraine to give up all their mineral wealth to the US.

You do realise that it was the Americans blocking the development of your oil industry. They wanted to starve you into submission. So you're basically celebrating the people who have been abusing your country and your family for decades.

I think Trump being Trump he is eyeing up the profit however (as you don’t need me to point out) your country is barely afloat financially so even if the USA cream off a lot of it, hopefully there will be a trickle down effect and things will somewhat improve.

People here (who don’t live under a dictatorship and dream of Your Party winning the general election) will however say how ‘uncomfortable’ they are about international law being broken, and continue to let perfect be the enemy of good

My dd has a good friend from Venezuela who has been displaced due to the desperate situation in her homeland .Hearing her stories over the years has made me very aware of that country and the plight of the people. Today l see those people being glad someone has come to their aid. I sincerely hope good things happen for them now as its a country rich in resources so the people deserve to live well. I am watching closely how things evolve.

Yes I’d say that that is fairly obviously what will happen.
That doesn’t mean Maduro wasn’t truly awful. But he’s not been replaced by someone who has done this because of concern for the welfare of the citizens, and therefore that welfare won’t be top of mind. Might well still be better for them of course, but Trump saying that the US will run it “for now” and that Machado “doesn’t have the support or respect” is extremely worrying. Who is he to decide who they support. He should now be working hard with the Venezuelans to ensure elections can be held and the results followed.

And leaving aside the specifics of Venezuela, the fact a US president can use military power, without even speaking to congress, to remove a leader and declare the US is now in charge of that country is not a good thing for the wider world.

Pedallleur · 04/01/2026 20:58

If Putin or China stepped in instead would you have been so enthusiastic. No such thing as a free lunch and Trump is going to want paying. He pardons one drug running ex President and forcibly removes a citizen from his own country.

So you want American troops on UK soil acting independently of the UK Govt? If Putin offered you Russian troops would you agree? Trump would bin the NHS off overnight

Sorry, I agree with this. Are you in Venezuela OP? Or are you based in the UK now?

eeemes · 04/01/2026 21:05

Unfortunately, there is no evidence that the lives of civilians in a country invaded by the U.S. to remove a despot/regime ever improve. It’s normally just eventually replaced with something worse once troops pull out. There are so many examples of this and literally none of it going well for the people long-term.

Pedallleur · 04/01/2026 21:08

Perhaps China or Russia could help the former inhabitants of Diego Garcia who were evicted by the UK/US Govts.
