Its something dd asked me and dh.
We've discovered we used to know/ met a few. I had to explain some were v famous years ago.
I went to school with some foreign royalty but later ended up shagging minor rock stars (had a song written about me)
Also in proper jobs met many influential politicians and a dictator.
Now have boring job
Anyone else?

Okay ... 👍 probably not, but then running to MN to brag ask strangers how many famous people you know

Are you ok? Do you need help, are you lonely? Just say you're lonely and need a hand hold - thats better than this

None

Same here, I've met a couple of famous people over the years eg Cherie Blair and Jo Pavey but I don't "know" any.

CherryRipe1 · 01/01/2026 14:31

My Dad was friends with Spike Milligan and we visited him a couple of times. He was quite manic and scared me as a child. My dad was of a similar character so in hindsight could see why they got along coupled with their love of playing jazz music as musicians.

dynamiccactus · 01/01/2026 14:32

Having seen Emma Watson mentioned, I've never met her but I did work at the same place as her dad for a short time! I once got the train partway home with him and had a chat but it was only later I discovered he was her dad.

I also worked with the brother of someone well-known - they are uncannily similar actually. But I didn't know the well known person at the time I worked with him, it's only when he pops up on TV now that I think "he's so like his brother"

Peridoteage · 01/01/2026 14:36

None at all. I am guessing you went to a rather expensive school and have connections to a wealthier subset of people than most of us.

Mark Lanegan. Anyone who has read his memoir will know I'm one of probably hundreds. Daniel O'Donnell gives me the major ick. Val, I might have, but our paths never did cross, and he was about 60 years older than me 😂

Thanks - I'd never heard of him personally, but a quick look online suggests that he was very prolific in his lifetime; and I had heard of some of the bands he played with.

I’ve got a friend who is in a long running soap. I was also once married to someone whose father was famous.

DH and I took my nephew, niece and families to lunch prior to a matinee of Oliver in July and Simon (Fagin) Lipkin joined us. He had been best man at my nephew's wedding ten years earlier and I had met him then but wasn't really paying attention at the time. I did this time!!

I went to see Oliver yesterday and he was absolutely brilliant in it. Please tell me he's a delight in real life. Fabulous show by the way.

Laserwho · 01/01/2026 14:39

I have a famous family member. But to us they are just a member of the family and don't really see them as famous. Just the same old person they have always been.

WhatIsTheCharge · 01/01/2026 14:40

I’m related by marriage to an ex-professional rugby player who’s name would absolutely be known to anyone in the U.K. who follows rugby.
DH and I are very close family friends with a guy who is more or less a household name for NFL fans. He was drafted into an NFL team out of college, played with them for a few years and then moved to another NFL team before retiring a few years ago. He was DH’s best friend all through high school, and his wife has become a good friend of mine.

WearyAuldWumman · 01/01/2026 14:42

One - a successful author.

However, my late husband was brought up on and around Balmoral Estate and worked there for a while. He was in the forestry division, but also ghillied for the Royals (including the Queen), so knew them - so far as you can know them - on a work basis. Also danced with some of them at the Ghillies' Ball.

His dad was first employed there in the reign of George VI.

I thought You’re So Vain was about Warren Beatty

VeterinaryCareAssistant · 01/01/2026 14:46

I know 3 but only because their pets are registered at the vets I work at.

One is a famous footballer who hates paying for his pet's treatment, to the point that a vet pretended he had know clue who he was and asked if he needed financial assistance for people on benefits. Famous footballer shut up a bit after that.

The other is a singer and the other a politician.

BohoGarden · 01/01/2026 14:47

My friend is married to a retired famous footballer. He's a miserable sod who doesn't do any of the housework and when he's not playing golf he's watching it on the tv. I do anything to avoid being in his company.

He just got an OBE so extra kudos to you.

@ Mapletreelane....yes he was lovely. And I agree, the show was beyond brilliant!

NessaCoaches · 01/01/2026 15:07

I was a driver for Gladys Knight and the pips, a nanny for Richard and Judy, personal assistant to Om Puri, roadie for The Who, I had an affair with Dodi and John Prescott and one of my best friends is Noel from HearSay.

NewYearsResolutionToBeLazy · 01/01/2026 15:08

I have a friend who is a famous author. People know their name but not many know what they look like so it’s actually a great way to be ‘famous’.

Badabingyabadabadoo · 01/01/2026 15:08

I once saw timothee chalamet outside a Mayfair hotel before I knew who he was..I was walking past and saw a bunch of girls waiting so I joined them and they told me him name and that he was an actor and he walked right by me..I didnt actually see him in an actual film til years later!
Footballer john Barnes also patted my head once at an airport when my older cousin got his autograph...again I had no idea who he was at the time.

I can't believe you would suddenly deny all knowledge of Goldie Looking Chain - some friend you are.

FlutteryButterfly · 01/01/2026 15:22

Asked out by Bryan Harvey (East17) at an Esso petrol station when i was aged 17 when they were in the height of fame. I said no.....

A few PL footballers, a couple of England cricketers and tv news reader.

HisNotHes · 01/01/2026 15:27

None. Closest I get is that I went to school with a very famous comedian but he was three years above me and I never even talked to him.

ChamonixMountainBum · 01/01/2026 15:29

I used to play rugby to a pretty decent standard (came through one of the premiership club academies) so know loads of ex England World Cup winners.
