Its something dd asked me and dh.
We've discovered we used to know/ met a few. I had to explain some were v famous years ago.
I went to school with some foreign royalty but later ended up shagging minor rock stars (had a song written about me)
Also in proper jobs met many influential politicians and a dictator.
Now have boring job
Anyone else?

I was once speaking about a National Treasure in front of my aunt. My cousin asked a question because she knew we'd once been friends. My aunt asked if he (the NT) would also know me, the answer would also be yes. We were college friends for years and worked in France together for a few months. He later did a whole series based on that trip. It seems on these threads you're best mates after spending a couple of hours in a room with a random celebrity.
I also know a production manager on Traitors and Celebrity Traitors. She's not really famous, but absolutely lovely, note the same cannot be said of the widely adored NT.

I don't know anyone famous, but my parter used to hang around with Banksy before he was famous. He was not cool in any way.

I am really quite close to royalty. I was in civil service when Andrew and fergie got engaged and a helicopter landed beside where I work and we went to stare at them through a wire fence. They both looked quite nervous.
Then, years later, i was cycling through Edinburgh near Holyrood palace when the queen was driven past. She looked quite bored.
then I was working when we were told that Princess Di was visiting opposite building. I was fed up with them by then and didn’t go to see her.

Loads tbh, seven operas, two pop songs, an episode of corrie and a three diss tracks written about me at last count.

bombastix · 01/01/2026 20:22

Lots! Mostly political or writers or journalists.

The older I get the less impressed I am by famous people. Powerful people, maybe still impressed.

Me and DS were on Look North a couple of years ago. Peter Levy liked our dinner 🤣 Meeting the London Boys is the crowning glory of 80s/90s early teenhood, well done. So sad about them still.

Peter Levy liked your dinner wins mumsnet for me! I met the London boys in Henry Afrikas, Scunthorpe. I was only about 11 (first year secondary). My aunt and uncles company cleaned the carpets and she worked her godmother magic on the manager. I went backstage and had photos and chatted to them. There was another girl there who had won a competition in some magazine or other. The manager said if I was quiet and stayed in the corner, we could stay and watch the show (me, mum and auntie). I sat down and fell asleep in the corner (i was 11!!!) 🤣🤣 I was (and still am) so sad about them. Whenever we see them on totp2, my husband rolls his eyes and says something along the lines of... You don't need to tell the story again! 🤣

i know quite a lot of famous people. Pop stars. Actors. Household names.
not really close with any at the moment but I’ve had dinner with lots of well known people over the years. Got a few on my phone.

Teach the child of a well established, long standing soap opera actor. Other parent used to be on the show too.Child has a different surname and it was only at parents evening that I discovered this. Child is lovely and the rest of the class seem oblivious.

For me I think it’s how the famous people carry themselves.

Our good friend (ex-NFL player) does get recognised, and his surname is legendary in his hometown…..but he’s just like a normal bloke and gets a bit awkward and shy when people ask “Aren’t you insert name?!”……he works from home these days, selling insurance and spends most of his free time caring for his horses. Doesn’t have any air of “famous” about him at all!

Fizbosshoes · 02/01/2026 10:09

I occassionally see a guy who was on tv on a fairly niche programme that was dropped after one series. He walks around like hes super important - in fact the strut/swagger is what draws attention, if he didnt do that hed been fairly anonymous

My mum met a woman who knew the woman that knit The Clangers. I hope I’ve not outted myself 😁

Genuine question - when did we stop using 'ed as a past tense verb ending (sorry if that's not a gramatically correct way of saying it) I would always say "knitted" - an adoption from the US I suppose?

CluelessAboutBiology · 02/01/2026 10:28

i am friends with a couple who have 6 Paralympic medals between them.

BloodyHellBob · 02/01/2026 12:48

@BollihobsI’m not sure. I haven’t stopped using it entirely however I think the phrasing of “that knitted” just sounds clunky. But maybe that’s just me!

Whosthetabbynow · 04/01/2026 17:29

My late dad’s late neighbour was in the greatest British gangster film of all time

Cyclistmumgrandma · 04/01/2026 17:41

Went back to visit my old place of work (abroad so I don't get there very often). People kept saying "Cyclist! Hi!" and flinging there arms round me. I was asked by a new member of staff if I was someone important as so many people knew me. No, I just worked across more departments than most people do and was there for nearly 20 years. Does that count?

The Clangers knitter still wins it for me. DH meets lots of big names on sets and things and I’m rarely excited by them. I don’t really see our more showbizzy friends in that environment, I see them for a coffee or over for dinner, so they’re v much switched off when they’re with us. I did get once very overexcited about DH’s proximity to Formula One’s Gunther Steiner, but that’s because I find him hilarious.

MartinAynuss · 05/01/2026 15:11

I called Bruno Brookes a cunt when I met him at a Brother Beyond concert at the Royal Albert Hall in 1989. Does that count?

Don't know anyone famous as a friend, but Scott Mills was in my class at school and was lovely.

Also met Jasper Carrott at a golf show I was working at and LOVED him, he was so nice to talk to.

That's as good as it gets for me!
