Its something dd asked me and dh.
We've discovered we used to know/ met a few. I had to explain some were v famous years ago.
I went to school with some foreign royalty but later ended up shagging minor rock stars (had a song written about me)
Also in proper jobs met many influential politicians and a dictator.
Now have boring job
Anyone else?

An actor from Prime Suspect and Eastenders was at the same funeral as me

Echobelly · 01/01/2026 12:55

We have one friend who's a fairly well known actor/presenter/campaigner

My parents are good friends of a former politician turned TV presenter (don't worry, not Liz Truss!)

Thewalrusandthecarpenter · 01/01/2026 12:55

I’ve seen lots of famous people in AA meetings but clearly would never say who they are!

SmileyMoonset · 01/01/2026 12:57

It’s kind of a strange question to ask I think.

Famous people are just people, they have friends and families, colleagues, school mates, teachers, neighbours, doctors, dentists, etc etc etc just like everyone else.

I don’t really get the desire to be famous, I think it would be horrible on a daily basis, and as far as I can see, it doesn’t lead to any additional happiness in life.

Sheridan Smith went to ballet class with my two best friends when we were in y6. She was younger than us. I never met her but my friends would go on and on and on about Sheridan this... Sheridan that.... Sheridan blah blah... wasn't it wonderful when Sheridan...
We couldn't afford ballet class and I was a bit too dumpy to be a ballerina. So my (other) claim to fame is that I irrationally hated Sheridan Smith for a really long time and now I think she's a really great actress 🤣🤣🤣

TubeScreamer · 01/01/2026 13:08

No A list friends but I do have quite a few friends and neighbours who are tv presenters and novelists

Silverbirchleaf · 01/01/2026 13:11

My son was at school with someone who is now a lioness.

Someone I knew at uni was an mp for a while.

I was at school with an Olympic competitor but the average person wouldn’t know them).

LilyFeather · 01/01/2026 13:11

I snogged Jay Kay from Jamiroquai back in the day. He had a nasty lip fungus and was off his head

I snogged one of the Pasadenas at a school disco in Marlow - they’d come to perform. It was about 15 I think. Can’t recall which Pasadena it was though!

there you go. Genuine, real and surely I win in the fame stakes here? 🤣

taxguru · 01/01/2026 13:12

None at all.

geminicancerean · 01/01/2026 13:16

It interests me how the notion of Celebrity is treated so differently by different generations. My Gen X MiL is obsessed with famous people and still gets Hello magazine. My grandmother was also an avid Hello reader and had coffee table books about the royal family. My Millennial pals are much more blasé about it. My 7yo DD could not give less of a shit that her godfather is a household name, rolls her eyes when he’s on TV and thinks Preston from Preston Plays on YouTube is the most famous man in the world.

miamo12 · 01/01/2026 13:21

So much is chance, a friend of a friend’s dad was in the music industry which he joined as well, I managed to get invites to various industry events, behind the scenes things etc so met people, snogged (no more) a couple of famous at time but now forgotten pop singers then later due to my job organised award ceremonies so yes met people but not friends. I know people who are credited due to production not because they themselves are famous. I did date an actor once but he was a twat

wossupthen · 01/01/2026 13:22

DS is getting married next year and future DiL is pals with Emma Watson so she may well be coming to the wedding. This pisses me off intensely as I simply cannot bear the woman (not Dil, EW) I'm just glad I dont drink..

Didimum · 01/01/2026 13:24

‘Know’ and ‘met’ is very different, surely?

jemim · 01/01/2026 07:58

I was on a speed awareness course with Kirsty Gallagher. Does that count?

oh yeah and my husband is a household name. He’s very famous. But I couldn’t possibly tell you his name, or job, or age, or hint of why he’s so successful. You’ll just have to guess. And I won’t tell you if you guess correctly. I’d absolutely never make that up though, so rest assured it is totally true that you are so fortunate to be reading the words of the wife of someone who lots of people recognise.

Is your DH very, very short with an extremely long nose and called Henry? If so, I don't want to sound mean, but everybody thinks that he really sucks.

I've also shagged a rockstar, no songs written about me though, and no one ever believed me until he released his biography, and it turned out he'd shagged everything that moved. 😂Other than that, I don't know anyone famous, unless you count an academic author who used to be on TV now and again.

Hmmmm, got to be either Val Doonican or Daniel O'Donnell.

ResusciAnnie · 01/01/2026 12:36

You’re definitely the woman from the parish council zoom. Jackie Weaver!

Either Jackie or the woman who chucked the cat in the wheelie bin.

Politicians247UnderwearExtinguishingService · 01/01/2026 13:27

Mark Lanegan. Anyone who has read his memoir will know I'm one of probably hundreds. Daniel O'Donnell gives me the major ick. Val, I might have, but our paths never did cross, and he was about 60 years older than me 😂

Unicornsatonalilo · 01/01/2026 13:42

I'm related to a famous golfer who lives in Australia (on my father's side)

Part of my family 'broke away' apparently and moved there years ago (long before I came along)

He must be the offspring of one of them (I wouldn't have a clue which one)

I also went to school with hunter from the gladiators (TV show in the 90's)

He was a few years above me and hated rugby apparently (thats what my sports teacher claimed)

That's as far as being mates with one goes

1Strawberrycat · 01/01/2026 13:46

My mate caught David Coverdale's cold back in the day! He’s so proud of it!

Starseeking · 01/01/2026 13:55

I used to work at the same company as Emma Watson’s mum. It was an organisation of about 3,000 employees, and based in the City. Emma came to meet her a few times at the office, however due to the general population working in that area, nobody batted an eyelid.

My husband is related by family to one of the milkybar kids and by a connection in the same family to someone from tears for fears. Its a very distant connection and he's never met the bloke from tears for fears but I like to let everyone know. Additionally, I was once on Look North AND I met the London Boys. I think I win 🤣🤣🤣

Me and DS were on Look North a couple of years ago. Peter Levy liked our dinner 🤣 Meeting the London Boys is the crowning glory of 80s/90s early teenhood, well done. So sad about them still.

I've noticed that my teenager and friends aren't really bothered about bands, actors etc. These people were gods/goddesses when I was his age, teens had people they were into almost obsessively collecting albums, posters, magazines and such.

Fizbosshoes · 01/01/2026 14:00

I know - as in i drop round to their house sometimes, because im friends with their wife - a professional sportsman who played for England...but i wouldn't say i knew him well

My headmaster at my school told us Simon Le Bon had gone to the same school - which was mildly exciting, even though he had left years before. According to Wikipedia, though, he didn't go there at all.... so that puts paid to my already very tenuous link! 🤣

CarrieMoonbeams · 01/01/2026 14:04

You know the song "Space Oddity" by David Bowie? The one where the first line is "Ground Control to Major Tom"? Well, I have a cousin called Tom.

VoltaireMittyDream · 01/01/2026 14:10

As a teenager, I served canapés at Chevy Chase’s father in law’s birthday party.

My brother once used a hotel gym and found himself working out next to 50 Cent (and a bunch of bodyguards).

I saw Helena Bonham Carter on a train platform once.

That’s as close as I have ever been to fame.
