Shall we solve each other’s simple problems?

Merryoldgoat · 26/12/2025 17:46

So. I have a whole load of shit I’m dealing with that cannot be easily solved.

However I also have a variety of very straight forward issues that I could do with people helping with - so how about we all solve each other’s simple stuff??

Things I need help with and would appreciate answers from people who know:

  1. How many towels do I need for a family of four?
  2. What is the best way to keep Tupperware properly organised?
  3. What shoes do I need to be smart in all weather?

TIA?

@Flowersforyourchocolateprettyplease was it just skimmed or full depth plaster?

Either way, you can see when the plaster is dry because it changes colour. Heating and ventilating the space will help it dry faster. You can also do a mist coat when it is still a bit wet.
Five months seems a bit excessive to me unless it is lime plaster?

GAJLY · 27/12/2025 12:48

We have a bath robe, hair turban, flannel and a bath towel each. It does the trick.

Giggorata · 27/12/2025 13:11

I dyed everyone's towels in their own colour when all the family were at home, and now it's just us, I have dyed all the towels in two colours that go with the bathroom curtains and rug.

Agree that the Vaseline is a good call for softer feet.

I have a large plastic storage box in the pantry for the Tupperware. I leave them until thoroughly dry and store them with the lids
I tried numbering the lids with a sharpie but it quickly wore off.
I haven't had the smell problem but occasionally wash them out with a bicarbonate of soda solution.

I’m obsessed with teddy bear fleece bedding!! I’ve held off getting it for a long time because I’m that age…. Sweat like a bastard! I thought it’d make me really hot but it doesn’t. It’s weird. It’s really cosy and warm when you get in but it doesn’t make me too hot! I’ve got my mum and sister into it too. Bought DS1 and his fiancé sore for Christmas but haven’t had any feedback yet. I got theirs and my last one online from OnlineHome Shopping (OHS). I think a double was about £14!

MylipstickiscalledHugMe · 27/12/2025 13:43

Gorgeous bedding with up to 70% off at bedeckhome.

They do Joules, Ted Baker and others. I wish I needed some more but sadly I don't

My probelm is I can't find any nail varnish that actually stays on for more than a couple of days. It all peels after the first shower. I suspect the ingredients that made it stay longer are now illegal!

Just skimmed. Going from electric to oil heating.
Have asked him a few times as thought I'd misunderstood, seeing as new builds are up and painted in no time.

  1. Six or eight towels of each size. They won't all need washing at the same time and towels can take up a lot of space.
  2. Have a dedicated cupboard or just a shelf, and stack containers of the same size towards the back of the cupboard with their lids piled in front.
  3. 1 pair each: waterproof boots, ordinary boots, court shoes, smart trainers, posh sandals, flip flop type sandals.

You're welcome. In return:

  1. Should I give back to my sister the green and yellow sparkly jumper she gave me for Christmas? She wears that kind of thing, and if I pretend to like it she may get me another one next year.
  2. Where can I buy clothes pegs that don't fall apart with a pinging noise after a few months?
  3. Is there any way of keeping rice cakes for more than a day without them turning into damp cardboard?

Thank you.

  1. You bet!
  2. Lakeland but £££££

@AmberLime Rather than red paint (which, as noted by PPs, would be difficult to overpaint), how about a feature wall of black or red damask/flock gothic design wallpaper? The bedside lamp could have a shade that carries on the theme.

My quandary: I have a tall (about 7 ft high) bookcase with tongue and groove boards at the back. The weight of books on the shelves was such that the boards opened up and the shelves then collapsed off their supporting pegs. How can I ensure the shelves stay in position?

Zebracat · 27/12/2025 16:01

Piles of clean washing. Anyone over 12 does their own laundry. They get a lot less inclined to chuck stuff in the basket after trying it on etc. Any Laundry left in public spaces gets put outside- careful, cos they will do it to yours if they catch you.

MinnieMountain · 27/12/2025 16:25

@outofofficeagain I resorted to picking our cat up and pushing her through her cat flap to go out. She soon got the idea when she wanted to go in again.

TheFluffyTwo · 27/12/2025 16:29

MylipstickiscalledHugMe · 27/12/2025 12:16

@TheFluffyTwo Hush Agnes Straight Leg Jeans fit me - I also have wide hips/small waist. They're reduced at the moment (the jeans not my hips ho ho). On the pictures they have the hems folded up but imo they look better unfolded.

@Cloudninelau a very thick layer of vaseline under socks at night, and eat plenty of good fats like omega 3, I swear this is the secret ingredient to avoid dry skin

Thank you! I'll have a look.

Screw them to the wall with brackets?

outofofficeagain · 27/12/2025 10:05

My issues

  • how do I get my cats to use the cat flap. They manage with the door propped open but not shut.
  • I don’t have enough kitchen cupboard space and my husband hoards condiments and random cheese or coffee related paraphernalia
  • how do I best clean my dog (spaniel) after a walk so he doesn’t make the entire house muddy. But also doesn’t take half an hour.

Cat tip. Put a bowl of tuna inside the cat flap and prop the flap open a smidgeon.....

Tryonemoretime · 27/12/2025 19:09

A brilliant red candle thought it was a Christmas angel, flew up into the air and sprinkled bright red wax down the wall and over my guitar before alighting on the carpet. Thankfully, someone had just blown it out, so nothing caught fire but how to get rid of the red wax stain?

Zuve · 27/12/2025 19:12

One large towel. Diet after Christmas. No big exercise until then, except for Christmas Day short walk to get the grub down.

Worriedreparents · 27/12/2025 20:20

dont know if anyone has said this but turbie twist hair towels really cut don on the number of towels needed, far smaller to launder too

  1. Two bath sheets, two smaller towels for each female family members/males who care about their hair, two hand towels for each bathroom.
  1. Chuck anything you have already and buy a new set that completely matches. Store in its own drawer/cupboard.
  1. Black leather Chelsea boots.

My own small problem:

  • I have a selection of old, non-matching sofa cushions. Should I continue to let them annoy me on a daily basis, or replace them? If replace, what colour cushions for a pair of light grey sofas?

Just buy new covers, not whole new cushions.

Wax on clothes you put newspaper over the wax and iron it. Not sure if that will work for the wall....

I’m wondering if going to London tomorrow with dc (primary age), where shall we go? Free, cheerful and not too busy. We haven’t been to the Maritime museum but travelling from Herts to Greenwich feels a bit far… is it worth it on a cold, short day when you can’t have a nice walk about.
Shall we just go the South Bank and see what’s left of the Christmas markets and hope it’s not so busy?

Edited

Agree with pp - head to Greenwich! Calmer, more enjoyable and easier to navigate with DC. I absolutely the maritime museum - there's plenty there to keep kids happy.

I’m going to Egypt and there’s no WiFi in the hotel. I’d like to get an eSIM to use Egypt’s ‘cellular network’ (the 4g that is just ‘out there’ / ‘in the sky’).

has anyone done this? Is it easy?

Perhaps plain white paper towels rather than newspaper?

But if modern newsprint doesn’t come off it wouldn’t matter.

Ughy · 27/12/2025 22:05

@Smallorveryfaraway you are my hero with your laundry rules. DH is the main culprit in our house. He piles up slightly worn clothes next to his bedside table, and then once it reaches about knee-height, he tips it ALL into the basket, regardless of whether worn for ten minutes or for three days. It means I finish up with my last load, all smug, only to turn around and find the basket literally overflowing immediately. Drives me mental.

When I have downed tools and insisted he does the laundry, he inevitably shrinks or ruins something incredibly expensive/ sentimental or will only wash his three pieces of gym clothing and disregards all of mine and the kids’ stuff… 🙄
