Shall we solve each other’s simple problems?

So. I have a whole load of shit I’m dealing with that cannot be easily solved.

However I also have a variety of very straight forward issues that I could do with people helping with - so how about we all solve each other’s simple stuff??

Things I need help with and would appreciate answers from people who know:

  1. How many towels do I need for a family of four?
  2. What is the best way to keep Tupperware properly organised?
  3. What shoes do I need to be smart in all weather?

TIA?

Brown paper is best.

Is it? It’s certainly traditional to use it, but is it as absorbent?

I don’t think it’s about absorbency rather the way the brown paper interacts with the wax…

Thank you, everyone, for your suggestions re red wax disaster! I'll try the brown paper tip tomorrow. Today it's 'sort out the sitting room, day', after 6 grandchildren, one baby, 2 dogs and 7 extra adults'. It's been one of my favourite Christmases ever! I blooming love Christmas 😍🥰

Screw them to the wall with brackets?

Add a
cross brace along the back. Two pieces of wood, to cross in an X shape at the back, 1”x1” should do it. Other than making the square to take the wood where it crosses, it’s easy.

I'd like to be able to hang non tumble dryer friendly clothes up in our utility room to dry, so our hallway doesn't look so weird when we open the door. I cant be arsed to find the joists to attach one of the pretty wooden racks to on the ceiling, so I was thinking of putting a curtain rail along the wall (its a proper wall, not stud) but does anyone have a better idea that would allow enough space for the hangers to hang perpendicular to the wall? Something that doesn't cost too much and isnt a faff to install and use!
Just to note we have a window in there and the downstairs loo that can be opened to help ventilate and avoid mould!

Zebracat · 28/12/2025 16:21

If you have space, put up a shelf and attach the curtain rail to the bottom.

jnh22 · 28/12/2025 16:27

Ive just sorted my Tupperware problem!

I decided on 4 sizes: smallish, medium, large (1 litre) and very large (2 litre).

I bought all the same brand so lids were interchangeable.

I have a dedicated cupboard and store them with their lids on so it’s easy to grab the one I need without having to search for a matching lid.

Geneticsbunny · 28/12/2025 16:37

@EmbroideredGardener a wardrobe pole might work? They are very easy to put up and you cut them to size with a hacksaw. You just need a small enough span, so up to 1.5m should be OK.

@oustedbymymate check out Nancy Birtwhistle on Insta. She does sweat removal stains somewhere in her posts.

x2 towels per person (one to use, one in the wash) plus hand/hair towels

Stacked. Key is to have multiples of the same one. Lids are a law onto themselves.

Black timberland boots

My problems

  1. Choose a specialist endometriosis surgeon
  1. Should I paint new skirting boards before or after DH fits them

After I reckon, or the paint might get chipped when he’s putting them on.

Mumto2at · 28/12/2025 18:16

1- 2 towels each and then rotate 2/3 hand ones each bathroom you have
2- stacked and then lids to the side/ in a box
3- no idea sorry.

help me 😂
when I met my partner he hadn't seen his child in a year due to BM issues (she pushed him out and he had little money to fight custody). I lived with my dad at the time and somehow that conversation never came up
fast forward to now BM and her Boyf that she pushed out hubby for broke up so she wants him to know his actual dad seeing as this one wanted nothing to do with him after the split (hubby has seen him sporadically prior to this was very hit and miss though). Now we have him EOW and I have no idea how to tell my dad my husband has another child. Times passing and I just don't know how to bring this up with him (everyone else knows I just dunno why I never mentioned it to him)

I like this idea! I'd just need to make sure it can handle the weight of wet washing, but I can probably do that with deep enough screws! @Geneticsbunny that's also a good idea, I'd have to think about what to attach them to as they're not going across from one wall to another.
@sueelleker that would work for smaller items, but I tend to wash my work uniform all in one go so I'd be afraid of it falling under the weight of it all! Thank you for the suggestion though

Bellasayscheeseplease · 28/12/2025 18:53

Towels. For towels and much else, I've always gone with the rule of three: one in use, one in the wash and one for emergencies/back-up. Because you know, life.
Tupperware. Perhaps the same rule applies. If it does, I've never been able to get it to work.
Footwear: no idea.

martinisforeveryone · 28/12/2025 18:58

I'm definitely going back to read this whole thread, but I had to stop by and say that Tupperware, or similar, and its lids are the invention of the devil. I must sort them at least once a month and I NEVER have a full match 😳

Iv discoverd that I can't wear shoes with heels anymore.not even small ones .And IV got wide feet.
This stems from when I was born 70 years ago with club feet.
Any tips for where I can buy comfy shoes that aren't too nunnty

Yourcatisnotsorry · 28/12/2025 20:08

12 large and they should be bath sheets not tiny bath towels. One in use, one in the wash, one for guests or swimming each. At least 2 hand towels for each bathroom/toilet. If you use hair towels then two for each person who uses those (we have a hair turban thing for DD).
I like them stacked with lids on. DH puts the lids inside one of the tupperwares which is infuriating.
DMs or similar boots, waterproof and go with everything.

Mumofsoontobe3 · 28/12/2025 20:15

We've found a house we love - first time buyers. Mortgage approved, offer accepted, lawyers instructed. What happens now?

The house has a small utility room off the kitchen - my first ever utility room! Space for a washing machine and a dryer. It has a sink and a cupboard underneath the sink. 2 very small counter tops, what do I need for the utility room? Does it need a shelf?

Skirting boards: before they're fitted. Painting when flat is much much easier than when fitted. Any scuffs due to fitting can be easily touched up.

@oustedbymymate Zote Mexican laundry soap (the pink one) for just about any stain. I am evangelical about it but sadly not on commission. https://amzn.eu/d/1nTr8j2 it sadly does not smell of "rose", more like citronella, but I use it to pre treat stains and I swear it's magic.

its these kinds of threads I love about mumsnet - you are my people

BatsInHibernation · 28/12/2025 21:10

@Mmmkaay replace them one by one with cushions you love. They don't need to match but look for colours and patterns that are sympathetic to your decor. Look for down filled or 'like down'.
I got a lovely green velvet down filled cushion from Next that didn't cost much and is crunchy and lovely and has aged very well. Also, some Rachel Ashwell ones in the sale that are pale linen with blue flowers and also down filled. Only ever buy cushions you love! With pale grey (depending on curtains and rugs etc) you could go bold and colourful.
