Will everyone please STOP the extremely tone deaf 'Christmas Fridge' threads

TempNameForObviousReasons · 21/12/2025 22:07

I see these multiple threads every single year and they drive me bonkers. The four days leading up to Christmas Day my feed is inundated with all the stuffed fridges, it's a complete and utter disgrace. Not just a few posters but sometimes literally hundreds of you all joining in with these enormous overflowing fridges, it's barbaric and in incredibly poor taste. I have already seen THREE seperate fridge threads today alone, it's scandalous... please people just think about what you are doing by jumping on this bandwagon. Now I take this a bit personally and here is why.... There are people in this world who are starving and many families, mine included, are having to rely on food banks this year just to keep our children fed. As in dippy eggs and soldiers on Xmas eve. Many of us are in a dire state with finances and the pressures of Xmas. The fridge threads are incredibly upsetting and triggering. By all means have a nice christmas dinner with all the trimmings but why post it and rub it in the faces of those less fortunate? They will be very lucky to scrape together a very basic dinner for the family this year?

I so look forward to seeing everybody's gluttonous greed in full swing, fridges stuffed full of obscene amounts of food and alcohol that will most likely go to waste. (And waistlines. The greed of Christmas it's all totally out of control and I despair)
All the cheese boards, cheesecakes, cheeselets, and on and on and on.
Honestly I wish MNHQ would BAN the threads, they cause many people anguish and distress.
It is one day so please keep some perspective or even better, pop a selection pack or some small treats in a collection trolley to help all the fantastic homeless charities and food banks ensure more people can enjoy a sweet treat on christmas day.

(Thanks to my local foodbank and those who kindly donated, at least me and my children have a lovely box of celebrations that I will bring out on Christmas Day for us) 🙂

I wouldn’t usually refer to an OP’s previous posts but not having enough money to feed your kids well at Christmas (and berating people who want to share their happiness at doing so) whilst considering cosmetic dental treatment does seem a very strange spending choice.

Incidentally many people can’t even afford non-cosmetic dental treatment so it does seem a bit heartless to be posting about unnecessary but desirable cosmetic dental treatment.

Oh dear. Confused

”Triggered” by a fucking fridge. The state we are in.

usedtobeaylis · 21/12/2025 23:16

I had no idea people posted pictures of fridges full of food. Crass.

She's getting invasilign! This is just an absolute rage bait post, she could afford it if she chose to. She chooses not to. And even if she couldn't afford it, it's a public forum! People can post what they like!

I have no understanding of why anyone can only put egg and soldiers out for their kids as a Christmas meal . Even on benefits you could squirrel away a £1 a week over a few months surely and as others have said veg is cheap and can make tasty meals . I’m not buying this story if im honest .

I’m not allowed soft boiled eggs any more, so the OP shouldn’t be posting about them. Far too triggering ;)

roundsquares · 21/12/2025 23:16

You lost me at the snide remark about gluttonous waistlines, to be honest.

Don’t click on the threads and then there’s nothing to be offended by.

TempNameForObviousReasons · 21/12/2025 23:11

I haven't commented on them at all.

I am being insulted because of this thread I have started. People just don't get it why I and others in my situation are so upset and annoyed by it all. Every single year.

Why are you claiming to speak for others in your situation? I'm in a similar situation and fridge threads don't upset or annoy me.

bigbumbum · 21/12/2025 23:16

OP Mumsnet is a place to discuss anything.

My child has a serious medical condition so Christmas, in fact everything looks different for us. Should that mean no one on Mumsnet should talk about the fun things they are doing?

Im sorry things are hard financially for you but that doesn’t mean no one can post about things they are enjoying. Yous situation isn’t the fault of other posters.

If those threads offend you so much simply scroll past and don’t open them

Awww, I'm sorry to hear about your child. Flowers I hope you still have a warm and peaceful Christmas. 💕

Are there three threads? I live on MN and haven’t seen one.

I can see two in Active but they’re on the Christmas board. The OP can hide the Christmas board if she likes.

In fact iirc that was the idea behind having a separate Christmas topic - it can be hidden if people find Christmas stuff a bit upsetting.

I know what you mean. I hate food waste even though i could do a ridiculous shop on the credit card..I felt the same about someone who listed the other day the huge quantities.. literally thousands of pounds they had bought for DC. I didnt respond on it but found it just too much.. tacky and wasteful. Its tone deaf for sure.

MatchaTea1 · 21/12/2025 23:19

I’m sorry you are having a tough time financially, but the appeal of mumsnet is it has people from all walks of life on here. Just because you can’t have something it’s a really spiteful and mean attitude to begrudge anyone else having what you don’t.

If people are now insulting you on other threads that’s as a direct response to your language used about them - if you can’t take it don’t dish it out surely 🤷‍♀️

Thanks for posting links to the fridge threads earlier. They sound quite interesting- we have had to tighten our belts a lot this year, but I’m still curious to see how the other half live in a lighthearted way 😁

Bloozie · 21/12/2025 23:19

You really are not being unreasonable.

I’ve no idea what anyone gets out of sharing a full fridge. Regardless of how it makes people who are struggling feel. It’s vulgar as fuck. Tacky. Braggy. Pointless. What am I supposed to do - give their Camembert a standing ovation?

I hope you and your kids have a lovely Christmas x

MaybeItsTimeForMeNow · 21/12/2025 23:20

I like to look even though its a mile away from my own. Just like I look at holiday destinations i can't afford. Don't read it op

It's been pretty obvious from the start this is an attention-seeking rage bait post 😁

But still it passes the time.

KilkennyCats · 21/12/2025 23:20

I have seen lots of threads today where people have been told they haven’t bought enough presents and ought to go out and buy some more. Very wasteful and tedious IMO but presumably some people are enjoying them
Yes, the amount of muppets advising posters to spend another £10/20 on “bits” (the mind boggles) to make the pile bigger is quite something.
Who wants or needs twenty quids worth of Primark/Poundland shite bought for no other reason than to make extra parcels for under the tree?

You've said this twice now. Where?

On the one I started, there's nothing between 2pm and now apart from one who has bought some puddings and cream.

On the second, the most controversial thing is a comment saying you should put raw meat on the lowest shelf.

On the third, not one post since 14.06.

Gowlett · 21/12/2025 23:21

Hundreds of pounds worth of cheese.
Targeting the exact Salmon Terrine…
Christmas overkill has become a norm.
Just look at the shops. It’s too much!
But, fair play to those who can afford it.
There will be so much waste, though…

TimePutASpellOnYou · 21/12/2025 22:57

And I just realised where I’d seen your name. I reported a really nasty post you made on a previous thread to a woman who was suffering with anxiety. It’s been deleted. So you think it’s ok to go around saying horrible things to people but then expect others not to post photos of their fridge because it upsets you! 🤣

As I said previously, prioritise food over your Invisalign treatment and you’ll be able to buy more food.

I have never been nasty to anyone with anxiety on here so why lie about me? Convenient you say its been deleted.
