Will everyone please STOP the extremely tone deaf 'Christmas Fridge' threads

I see these multiple threads every single year and they drive me bonkers. The four days leading up to Christmas Day my feed is inundated with all the stuffed fridges, it's a complete and utter disgrace. Not just a few posters but sometimes literally hundreds of you all joining in with these enormous overflowing fridges, it's barbaric and in incredibly poor taste. I have already seen THREE seperate fridge threads today alone, it's scandalous... please people just think about what you are doing by jumping on this bandwagon. Now I take this a bit personally and here is why.... There are people in this world who are starving and many families, mine included, are having to rely on food banks this year just to keep our children fed. As in dippy eggs and soldiers on Xmas eve. Many of us are in a dire state with finances and the pressures of Xmas. The fridge threads are incredibly upsetting and triggering. By all means have a nice christmas dinner with all the trimmings but why post it and rub it in the faces of those less fortunate? They will be very lucky to scrape together a very basic dinner for the family this year?

I so look forward to seeing everybody's gluttonous greed in full swing, fridges stuffed full of obscene amounts of food and alcohol that will most likely go to waste. (And waistlines. The greed of Christmas it's all totally out of control and I despair)
All the cheese boards, cheesecakes, cheeselets, and on and on and on.
Honestly I wish MNHQ would BAN the threads, they cause many people anguish and distress.
It is one day so please keep some perspective or even better, pop a selection pack or some small treats in a collection trolley to help all the fantastic homeless charities and food banks ensure more people can enjoy a sweet treat on christmas day.

(Thanks to my local foodbank and those who kindly donated, at least me and my children have a lovely box of celebrations that I will bring out on Christmas Day for us) 🙂

I’ve never opened a thread that hadn’t interested me or something I don’t want to comment on or see so maybe do the same and also I’m not in the best financial situation but I don’t hate on those that are better off and able to fill their fridges to the brim by their own choices. Equally it’s no one’s fault on here that you aren’t able to do the same

NeverDropYourMooncup · 21/12/2025 23:21

You've said this twice now. Where?

On the one I started, there's nothing between 2pm and now apart from one who has bought some puddings and cream.

On the second, the most controversial thing is a comment saying you should put raw meat on the lowest shelf.

On the third, not one post since 14.06.

One of them says something about the OP of this thread not liking the fridge pictures. So OP is mentioned but there is absolutely no insults.

Hundreds of pounds worth of cheese.
Targeting the exact Salmon Terrine…
Christmas overkill has become a norm.
Just look at the shops. It’s too much!
But, fair play to those who can afford it.
There will be so much waste, though…

I was so hoping your post was a poem.

GalaxyJam · 21/12/2025 23:22

I’m not arsed about people having full fridges. It’s the posting photos of them on social media that I find really fucking odd. It’s a fridge full of food.
Each to their own though, people get excited by different things I guess!

You’re a pillar among men ❤️ (or insert whatever other commendation you were looking for here)

Not looking for any commendation, why would you think that? Simply just giving my thoughts on the matter, as are we all… putting stuff into perspective, and missing loved ones.

Are there three threads? I live on MN and haven’t seen one.

I've never seen one, and wouldn't be interested in opening one if I did.

Yeah that's what I thought too?

I had a quick look at all 3 and literally no-one has insulted the OP.

Thank you for understanding my point.
I bite my tongue every year but now that things are really tough for me I just had to snap.
People are so greedy and don't consider those less fortunate.
Also how can I avoid the threads, they are right there when I log onto Mumsnet!

Avoid them by not clicking on them.

Sorry you're having a hard time but you're being ridiculous. I wouldn't say MN should ban threads about pregnancy because I'm not able to conceive, threads about home improvement because I only rent and can't afford to buy, or threads about outfits I can't fit into. The Internet isn't just for you x

Overthebow · 21/12/2025 23:23

FWIW I like egg and soldiers, but complaining that’s all your DCs will get on Christmas Eve is a bit ridiculous. That’s what, £3? Big bags of veg and potatoes are 5p in Morrisons at the moment, surely you could do something with those? Or use your Invisalign money.

TiredofLDN · 21/12/2025 23:24

IHateTheElf · 21/12/2025 23:16

She's getting invasilign! This is just an absolute rage bait post, she could afford it if she chose to. She chooses not to. And even if she couldn't afford it, it's a public forum! People can post what they like!

Course people can post what they like.

Just such a shame that- esp at Christmas - people dont post stuff that’s a bit kinder / bit more understanding to others in a less fortunate position.

No idea about the Invisalign. Doesn’t change that many posters have been utterly vile and lacking in empathy.

MyChristmasCheerHasBuggeredOff · 21/12/2025 23:24

But you could say that about anything...
Help me find a house
Look at my new car
What presents are you buying for your 10y old
Is this a postive pregnancy test

Every thread maybe about something that someone else hasnt got...
But they post because this is a public forum and people are allowed to post whatever they wish

5128gap · 21/12/2025 23:24

You can't censor more fortunate people sharing their lives because others are less fortunate. Where would it end, as pretty much everything some of us have, there will be others that don't. You'd have probably done more good if you'd not told people what not to do (they don't like it!) and focused more on what you'd like them to do, ie, donate to the foodbank. A post about the amazing work they do and how to help would have landed better than the telling off and calling people greedy.

Mummysof · 21/12/2025 23:25

To add, can I ask what you’re expecting people to walk round a food shop and not buy exactly what they want because they need to think of you and other food bank users? I can gurantee there’s a few that donate to food banks as they go but oh my word they can’t shop to what they can financially afford just because they need to stand at a shelf and say I really fancy that or need that for my dinners over the Christmas period but I won’t buy it because Susan down the road is a food bank user and I must think of her and not buy something

Carycach4 · 21/12/2025 23:25

If you have 10 or 12 people who are at your house over Christmas, then an overflowing fridge is a necessity not an extravagance

Edited

“She’s getting Invisalign”! Has me really lolling.

Best remark of the year.

op come on now, what’s the crack really?

I have yet to see a fridge thread pop up on active.

Have very much been agog at the big fat brother and boyfriend eating everything and everyone thread though.

blankcanvas3 · 21/12/2025 23:26

I quite like dippy egg and soldiers

I don’t think anyone is suggesting that people shouldn’t buy whatever food they want, at Christmas or any other time. It’s the posting photos of it on social media that’s a bit odd.

Yes @TempNameForObviousReasons which threads are berating and attacking you? I have looked at 3 'show me your fridge' threads, and can't see anyone attacking you.

Post a link to those threads where people are attacking you...

.

PInkyStarfish · 21/12/2025 23:27

What a horrible and nasty jealous post. If you don’t want to read about others enjoyment of Christmas, then don’t open those threads.

Being bitter and resentful with a massive chip on your shoulder is truly dreadful.

Franpie · 21/12/2025 23:27

I’ve never seen or been on those threads but I wouldn’t see it as greed or showing off wealth. I would assume they are hosting many over the Christmas period.

We’re away this year so our fridge is disappointingly bare as I’m trying to run it down. In previous years when we have hosted family on Christmas Day and then friends on Boxing Day my fridge has been bursting. If catering for 10 or 12 people, it’s impossible to fit everything in the fridge.

Fbfbfvfvv · 21/12/2025 23:27

Describing showing peoples fridges as “a complete and utter disgrace” is a bit strong. Even shops and supermarkets are rammed full of Christmas. How are you getting through each day if you are triggered by people enjoying Christmas?

All of us have things that can hit a nerve (there are threads I avoid for that reason). I’m sorry you have it tough. For what it’s worth I’ve never posted a photo of my fridge, my fridge is tiny. But I enjoy seeing other peoples only because I like seeing how people eat differently. I’m a bit weird/nosy though, when we had plastic recycling boxes that you could see into I used to have a glance to see what my neighbours had put in them!

I think you’ve kind of missed the point.
Op is referring to posting a picture of your food shop on social media, for complete strangers to exclaim at.
It’s a kind of bizarre thing to do.

Howardyoudo · 21/12/2025 23:28

So fridge threads are triggering now?

a thread that is clearly titled and you open it and are triggered? Honestly get a grip.

mondaytosunday · 21/12/2025 23:28

You can say that about anything. People shouldn’t post about holidays abroad because so many can’t even afford a minibreak in Blackpool. People shouldn’t ask ‘which property should I choose’ because many can barely afford rent; people shouldn’t ask about baby names because so many have fertility issues!
These holiday fridge threads are clearly labelled as such in the title. If it offends you don’t click on it.
By the way my fridge is fairly stuffed when my kids are both at home - I assure you it will all be eaten within a few days! It’s not greed or gluttony, it’s a family celebration and several meals all at home. We cook together and eat together. Sure more food than normal is consumed, but the Christmas ‘feast’ is an annual holiday and I make no apologies for enjoying it.
And who do you think donates to the food bank?
