Husband told my sister to ‘fucking grow up’

I’m stuck in the middle over something which happened last night. Myself and DH met up with my Dsis and her partner for a dinner in a local restaurant.

The service was a bit slow and DH was getting a bit fed up/hangry. When it eventually came out, everything was placed into the middle for us to share out (think Chinese/thai type meal).

DH immediately started serving items on to his plate and my Dsis basically asked him to stop so she could get a video. He asked why and she said so she could upload on her to her social media. He then said the fucking grow up comment and there was an awkward atmosphere.

DH hasn’t apologised and I’ve had a shitty text off Dsis today. Luckily we aren’t spending Christmas together.

I absolutely think DH was in the wrong but he’s protesting his innocence and said having waited long enough for the food to arrive he shouldn’t have been told he couldn’t eat it.

It's the Instagram generation. If you don't take a picture of it, did it exist/happen?

And why do they take a picture of their food before it goes into their body and not also when it comes out of their body? Why not document the full experience? If the food disagrees with you, take a picture of the vomit as well.

Team DH here.

VicountBiscuit · 21/12/2025 19:03

I'm with your DH. Your sister needs to grow up, silly teenage behavior.

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 21/12/2025 19:10

They were both in the wrong.

Your sister shouldn't have asked him to stop eating so she could video food if he'd already been waiting a while.

He could have said 'I don't want to wait any longer, I'm starving so I'm going to eat' instead of insulting her.

On balance I think he was more wrong, she was very annoying but probably not deliberately, he said something deliberately nasty to embarrass her

moose17 · 21/12/2025 19:11

If your sister is over 18 then he’s right, she needs to grow up. Food for a for eating not for facebook likes

"The done thing"?

Nope.

Agreed.

Most people I know and knew slowly dropped off of posting on social media in our late 20’s. We weren’t the types take photos off our food though (or our shoes which was a thing at the time 😂)

I’m not sure what the demographic is anymore but surely most people in the restaurant would be filming their food on arrival if it was the ”the done thing”.

OriginalUsername2 · 21/12/2025 19:14

I suppose it is more shit to be rude to your partners’ family.

HouseofDreams · 21/12/2025 19:15

He is rude
She is annoying

stealthninjamum · 21/12/2025 19:15

I don’t like his language but I agree with the sentiment. I would suggest she apologises for further delaying the food and he apologises for the way he spoke to her.

UncannyFanny · 21/12/2025 19:18

Everyone has to stop eating because she wants to upload a video on instagram? Sorry, your sister is a dick and needs to grow up.

fatphalange · 21/12/2025 19:18

Deeply unpleasant way to speak to someone. I’d be embarrassed and angry on behalf of my sister if anyone spoke to her like that. A grown man getting angry for having to wait for his food and then taking it out on any sister of mine wouldn’t be acceptable to me.
Would I have stopped to let her take a quick video ? Probably not unless it was going to take literally seconds. I’m not some mardy arse who thinks it’s fine to swear at family though so I’d have said something like ‘no way I’m starving, can’t wait to tuck in- sorry!’

BitOutOfPractice · 21/12/2025 18:43

What? For 20 seconds? A man must eat immediately or he gets “hangry”. Fuck that shit.

it warranted, at most an eye roll and a jokey comment about the evils of social media has moving on. Not a snappy, rude socially awkward snipe.

Edited

She needs to sit separately then. Ive ordered food, it arrives, Im eating it. Nothing to do with being 'a man', this is about basic respect for the group that she is with, its not all about her and her stupid photo op

Dustyfustyoldcarcass · 21/12/2025 19:21

Why couldn't she have just videoed the food with some missing? Surely it's better to video people enjoying it.

Midgetgemsplease · 21/12/2025 19:22

They're both adults. Let them adult between them

HisNibs · 21/12/2025 19:22

"my Dsis basically asked him to stop so she could get a video". I do wonder exactly what she said to ask him to stop? I've seen "basically" used to paint a conversation in a whole different light. I suspect that perhaps Dsis wasn't as polite as she could have been?

Createausername1970 · 21/12/2025 19:24

Hanger is immaterial, you don't do it regardless. To anyone. Fuck that shit.

You can’t wait 30 seconds? Really?

Youd rather sit separately in a table by yourself away from the social party at Christmas with your family, than wait a minute for your food. Ok. You do you.

Bc87 · 21/12/2025 19:27

Not everything needs to go on social media.

The way he worded it was horrible though 😞

TheignT · 21/12/2025 19:28

I can't stand people messing about and letting food go cold. Unless she paid for it all it isn't up to her to dictate when people can eat.

BitOutOfPractice · 21/12/2025 19:28

Binus · 21/12/2025 19:25

We all make compromises for our loved ones. Every day. 30 seconds really isn’t much.

BitOutOfPractice · 21/12/2025 19:29

BettysRoasties · 21/12/2025 19:00

I mean I don’t care if it’s 20 seconds or 10 minutes I’ve paid for my food I’m eating it your photo ruined or not 🤷🏻‍♀️ if you’re paying then knock yourself out.

Really, your impulse suppression is that poor? Wow.

Dunnocantthinkofone · 21/12/2025 19:29

Whilst he was rude, I’m suspecting she pulls these pathetic attention seeking stunts regularly. A straw that broke the camel’s back perhaps?

Im sorry but she sounds insufferable and I’m 100% team DH

BitOutOfPractice · 21/12/2025 19:28

Why is the compromise them waiting rather than her not videoing?

The food was purchased to eat not to photo.

ForLoveNotMoney · 21/12/2025 19:30

How embarrassing for your sister. I too would have told her to grow up if she tried to stop me eating the food I’d paid and waited for.

BettysRoasties · 21/12/2025 19:31

BitOutOfPractice · 21/12/2025 19:29

No but I purchased my food to eat it. Not for a wanna be 30 year old influencer to photo. She can photo her own meal by all means but I want to eat mine while it’s still at optimal temp not once she’s finished faffing.
