Wearing pyjamas around the house?

Just a lighthearted one!

At weekends I always come downstairs in my PJs, have a slow morning and a cuppa before getting ready for the day. And in the evenings, once I’ve put my daughter to bed, I normally get straight back into my PJs (as long as I’m not expecting company!) and then go downstairs to watch TV/relax until it’s actually time to go up to bed.

My friend seems to think this is weird and that pyjamas should only ever be worn in the bedroom. For clarity, we’re not talking anything revealing — just long bottoms and a T-shirt, the comfy kind you could answer the door in if the postman knocked!

Surely I’m not the only one who does this? Is wearing PJs around the house really that unusual?

Would love to know what everyone else does!

I've never done it but you like doing it so it's your choice.

TheTaupeScroller · 10/12/2025 18:53

I can't understand the appeal in being in nightwear and slob around all day, but it's not uncommon. For me it's weird, and not even comfortable 😂

I don't know people who stay home doing nothing and can wear pjs all morning or evening, unless they're very ill, so that might have something to do with it.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 10/12/2025 18:54

Ooohhh I might go and put my PJs on right now

Tryingatleast · 10/12/2025 18:54

I wish! Work Saturdays and Sundays and have to drop my son into evening shift so can’t even after work on weekdays. Sounds lovely to me!!

ChristmasIsAMindset · 10/12/2025 18:55

Same as you, but I raise you WFH pjs.

WFH PJs consist of garish and fleecy bottoms, a vest without a bra, and a work-appropriate top to throw on for meetings and calls. It's the modern day mullet: business on top, party on the bottom.

As soon as I get in from work, I put PJs on 😂 I don't have comfy/lounging clothes. I don't want to sit around in jeans or a dress!

Same haha! Can't be cosy in jeans!

Purpleturtle45 · 10/12/2025 19:09

When I met my husband he used to think it was weird getting changed into jammies when you got home form work, now he is a full convert 🤣

JLou08 · 10/12/2025 19:12

I do the same as you. I love lounging in the evenings, I wouldn't be as comfortable sat in my clothes.

NuffSaidSam · 10/12/2025 19:14

I get dressed when I get up normally, but it's PJ's on as soon as I get home from work (even if someone is coming over normally!).

NancyJoan · 10/12/2025 19:14

I can’t bear the idea of cooking or eating a meal in pyjamas, so would never put them on before bedtime, but weekend mornings are made for a slow start in pyjamas with a cup of tea and a read of a book.

PaisleyGilmourStreet · 10/12/2025 19:19

My 'about the house' clothes are all PJ bottoms and t shirts 🙂
There's a want about people who lounge at home in jeans 😂

SeaAndStars · 10/12/2025 19:32

I'm at the stage now where I resent having to do anything in the evenings which means I can't be in my PJs by 6pm.

BauhausOfEliott · 10/12/2025 19:40

I wouldn’t wear pyjamas all day but I often change into them after I’ve had my dinner and I’m relaxing for the rest of the night, or I put them on after a post-workout shower. I don’t ever wear them in bed, just as lounge wear.

I think this topic crops up a lot on Mumsnet and some posters seem to get really cross and judgemental about other people wearing pyjamas; I really don’t know why.

SwiftWatching · 10/12/2025 19:52

I don't understand sleeping in clothes, so pj's are for wearing at home but not in bed

SwirlyShirly · 10/12/2025 20:01

I think anyone who thinks pyjamas are just for bed to be completely irrational.

currently wearing my super fluffy gizmo from Gremlins pjs. I love them, they are so warm and soft and cozy, I’m living my best life.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 10/12/2025 20:03

Im in pjs as soon as im in from work

Hammy19 · 10/12/2025 20:06

I have separate 'bed' jamas and 'lounging around on the sofa' jamas 😂

Timebudda · 10/12/2025 20:30

Op your friend is barking mad.
I live in pjs, if im not going out why wear clothes i want to be comfy.
Even if i have visitours, i dont care its my home and i will wear what i want indoors in my own home.
Infact i am waiting for new pjs to arrive tommorw.
I have loads.

Solentsolo · 10/12/2025 20:35

I know no one what would ever dream of doing this! Get up, get dressed. Ready to start the day. What happens if a friend drops by in the evening at random and you’re in your PJs! Does this not happen? Do people not have friends these days.

Theres lots of threads in which people wearing pjs in the day crop up and it blows my mind every time. The things you learn.

PermanentTemporary · 10/12/2025 20:35

Not that keen. I was brought up that you could wear nightwear to eat breakfast downstairs, but after that you had to get dressed unless ill and I don’t really feel comfortable in pjs downstairs. Usually end up with cold ankles or just generally the wrong temperature in pjs.

Pretty sad that the assumption obviously is now that it is impossible that anyone might knock on your door/drop round to see you. Until very recently I lived in a community where that still happened - in fact it very occasionally happens even in my new place - and I like that spontaneity.

just buy some comfy clothes? All of the clothes I wear are comfortable. Why buy them otherwise?

Owly11 · 10/12/2025 20:37

Ask your friend what the hell is wrong with her!!!!!!

Hayley1256 · 10/12/2025 20:39

If I don't have any plans on a sat or sun then I have a morning shower and change into a fresh pair of pj's. I would end that friendship!

Screamingabdabz · 10/12/2025 20:41

I used to work with a woman who said her husband would ‘disapprove’ if she wore nightwear or pjs around the house. I was like 🤯

Nothing beats fluffy comfy pjs.
