Wearing pyjamas around the house?

Just a lighthearted one!

At weekends I always come downstairs in my PJs, have a slow morning and a cuppa before getting ready for the day. And in the evenings, once I’ve put my daughter to bed, I normally get straight back into my PJs (as long as I’m not expecting company!) and then go downstairs to watch TV/relax until it’s actually time to go up to bed.

My friend seems to think this is weird and that pyjamas should only ever be worn in the bedroom. For clarity, we’re not talking anything revealing — just long bottoms and a T-shirt, the comfy kind you could answer the door in if the postman knocked!

Surely I’m not the only one who does this? Is wearing PJs around the house really that unusual?

Would love to know what everyone else does!

I suppose if your friend usually dresses quite casually she probably feels comfortable just pottering around like that? I don’t sleep in pyjamas but usually wear pyjama-type clothes of a stretchy soft trousers and vest / cotton sweater type around the house and garden unless having visitors. I mostly wear fitted dresses when out, not really what I want to be wearing scrunched on the sofa or when out feeding and watering the ducks!

I work from home, but I wear comfy work clothes in working hours. However, the SECOND I log off, I get in my pjs. And on the rare occasion that I'm forced to leave the house, they're on within 5 minutes of getting in 🤣

I don't have any pjs as I sleep in shorts and a camisole or tank, but I frequently wear yoga pants or running leggings around the house. Is that considered the same thing?

StepAwayFromMyCrutches · 10/12/2025 20:48

I am with your friend. Pyjamas are for sleeping in. I might stay in them later on a weekend, or if I am unwell. But would never wear them in the evening for sitting around in.
I don't wear uncomfortable clothes though.

It's not weird!! It's what I enjoy doing also op. Those slow mornings, early evenings or as soon as I get in the house, when you just want to be cosy.
I have a fair few sets of pyjamas, DH thinks it's weird but it's part of my relaxing process.

singmoon · 10/12/2025 20:49

I don't really ever wear pyjamas, even in bed, but I have what I call sloppies. Basically trackies t shirts sweat shirts etc, and I change into these pretty much the second I get home. Love being comfy at home.

Tdcp · 10/12/2025 20:57

Your friend is weird 😂

blankcanvas3 · 10/12/2025 21:02

On weekdays I put my pj’s on as soon as I know I won’t be going out again, so if that’s at 3:30 once I’ve picked up DD from nursery, then its 3:30! Weekends I stay in pyjamas all morning unless I’m going out, then on again as soon as I know I’m not going out again later on.

cannyvalley · 10/12/2025 21:04

I wear a tshirt and pants to sleep in bed, but still own loads of pairs of PJ’s … exactly so I can wear them around the house. Nothing better than getting out of clothes after work and getting comfy PJ’s on.

ComfortFoodCafe · 10/12/2025 21:04

Yanbu. I would wear mine all the time if I could I have about 15 pairs. 😂

Anononony · 10/12/2025 21:08

I don't get dressed if I'm not leaving the house 🤣 especially at the moment, my jammies are warm, I'm not getting cold getting changed to mooch around the house

I will add I do shower daily (before the afternoon school run, wfh for myself, partner does morning drop off), so I'm not festering!

TheNameWasOnceChosen · 10/12/2025 21:19

If I'm in, my PJ's are on. First thing I do when home is put my PJ's on. My son does too.

TheWibble · 10/12/2025 21:22

For me pyjamas are just comfortable house clothes. If I'm chilling out at home, pyjamas are what I'm wearing. I don't actually wear mine to bed, as I prefer to sleep in my underwear. So in the morning, I get up and put my pyjamas and robe on to go downstairs. I only really get properly dressed to leave the house.

Missymarple · 10/12/2025 21:34

Your house, your business but I wouldn't wear my PJs round the house. I don't feel quite comfortable being up and about without my bra on. I'm not sat there in a dress and heels, I happily go about the place in my lounge wear over my bra and knickers, but the PJs don't make an appearance until I'm getting in bed.

mondaytosunday · 10/12/2025 21:45

I got my teenage DD pjs that said ‘weekend uniform’ on it - so yea if she wasn’t going out she’d wear them all weekend.
If I’m not going out on a Sunday I might stay in pjs all day (I’m usually out with the dog but she’s 14 and starting to struggle m, so if the weather is poor she’s happier just doing her thing in the garden).

I know no one what would ever dream of doing this! Get up, get dressed. Ready to start the day. What happens if a friend drops by in the evening at random and you’re in your PJs! Does this not happen? Do people not have friends these days.

Theres lots of threads in which people wearing pjs in the day crop up and it blows my mind every time. The things you learn.

It blows my mind that you know no one who’d do this!! And like you I am fascinated every time I read one of these threads, for the opposite reason. I find it amazing how annoyed some people (not you) seem to get, and fling about words like ‘slovenly’.

Are you really confident that no one you know does this? I’d love it if you asked your friends and report back!

I do have friends but few who would drop round unannounced of an evening. And any close friend who did because they needed me - I’d not care at all about them seeing me in my jammies. They are people I go on holidays with and they’ve seen it all before, hell even sat in both our pjs together - that’ll tip you over the edge 😆

It’s not compulsory to go bra-less if you’re wearing pyjamas. If I’m wearing pyjamas to relax in the evening (I never wear pyjamas in bed), I’ve always got a bra on. I don’t find it comfortable to go bra-less. I only take my bra off to go to bed and even then I frequently swap my bra for a non-wired bralette to sleep in.

It’s not 1950.

I’ve got plenty of friends but none of us would randomly turn up at each other’s houses unannounced in the evening because we’re all considerate, thoughtful people who are aware that on a normal evening any one of us will likely be in the middle of cooking or eating dinner, putting kids to bed, enjoying a film with our partner, taking a long bath with a glass of wine and a book, etc. Therefore we would pick up the phone and call/message to check rather than just turning up unannounced.

Also, I aim only to be friends with nice, warm, kind people who aren’t shallower than a puddle on the pavement and therefore wouldn’t mind a bit what I was wearing in my own home. Consequently it wouldn’t matter if they saw me in pyjamas anyway. If I spend weekends with friends, we all see each other in PJs in the mornings and evenings, and the sky has yet to fall in.

madaboutpurple · 11/12/2025 04:11

My sister thinks it is a terrible situation and told me she had to bring it up within discussions from friends .She has not told me what her friends reckon so I don't tell her any more about this .If I have no plans to go out I tend to stay in my PJ's. My friends agree with me and if any sales people call I always say Oh I work shifts and have just got up so I can't make any decisions. I am actually retired .My sister reacted so badly, it was like admitting to murder as far as she was concerned. When it was lockdown I only put outdoor clothes on when we went for a walk. I got use to it.

MsTiggy · 11/12/2025 04:52

Yes I’m a pyjama person. I’ll change into them when I’m home after work.
If I have nothing to go out for on a Saturday I’ll get up and shower, do my hair and makeup and put on my nice Saturday jammies 😂. Festive ones this month.
I don’t sleep in them, only relax around the house in them.

Hufflemuff · 11/12/2025 05:10

I will wake up, spend 2 hours cleaning in pjs from night before. Shower. Change into different set of pjs on the weekend if im not going anywhere. Then at night, change into another pair of pjs because I would have more than likely spilled dinner or a drink droplet on myself in the day - or smell of cooking from where I'd cooked in the pjs.

SouthernNights59 · 11/12/2025 05:27

While I don't do it myself it's certainly not unusual.

NewNameforThisPost2025 · 11/12/2025 05:40

Your friend is crazy. No one wears pjs just in the bedroom!

I WFH and feel grotty wearing pjs all day. I do it all the time, which is how I know how grotty it feels! (Depression.)

At the other end of the day, 8pm earliest is pj time for me.

I do lounge about in them on weekend mornings, but I feel mentally healthier if I manage to get up and dressed by around 9. Not that that happens very often!

The nation became wedded to our pjs during lockdown, imo.

Is she assuming you don’t change your pyjamas frequently enough?

To stay in the same pjs all day and then go to bed in them would feel grungy to me. But I also find the ritual of getting ready for bed and changing into night clothes helps me get a good nights sleep. I’ve just made sure I’ve got a lot of pairs of lovely Jim jams. Thinking about it, I could probably go days without wearing out door clothes and not get smelly. 😀
