Wearing pyjamas around the house?

Just a lighthearted one!

At weekends I always come downstairs in my PJs, have a slow morning and a cuppa before getting ready for the day. And in the evenings, once I’ve put my daughter to bed, I normally get straight back into my PJs (as long as I’m not expecting company!) and then go downstairs to watch TV/relax until it’s actually time to go up to bed.

My friend seems to think this is weird and that pyjamas should only ever be worn in the bedroom. For clarity, we’re not talking anything revealing — just long bottoms and a T-shirt, the comfy kind you could answer the door in if the postman knocked!

Surely I’m not the only one who does this? Is wearing PJs around the house really that unusual?

Would love to know what everyone else does!

I don’t wear PJs or any other nightwear come to that, but there is nothing unreasonable in you wearing what you want in your own home.

TheZanyMintViewer · 11/12/2025 06:41

I wear pj's most of the time. I WFH.

A lot of MN posters seem to think it means something terrible about your character or life but I think it's grand.

SlothCat · 11/12/2025 06:43

My pyjamas are mostly more like loungewear anyway and if I’m at home, that’s what I’ll be wearing

honeylulu · 11/12/2025 07:16

I think it's quite common. I rarely do it myself as I rarely wear pyjamas unless it's really cold. I also like to have a bath just before bed so my nightwear goes onto a clean body. But when I get home from work I do change into leggings/tracksuit bottoms and a t-shirt/hoodie which is similarly "loungey".

I don't pass any judgement on people being comfy in their own homes.

Terriblytwee · 11/12/2025 08:18

Absolutely not. Have some self respect and get dressed… is what I think but I KNOW in the grand scheme of things it doesn’t really matter.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 11/12/2025 08:21

I wear PJs a greater part of the time. I wfh in my bed with the dog at my feet, get up and dressed when I've got stuff to do and then back into PJs once it's done. I walk the dog in my PJs (I live in a tiny hamlet in the middle of nowhere and can go DAYS without seeing another soul). I eat dinner in my PJs. I'm sitting here in my Christmas PJs right now. They are comfortable, wash and dry quickly, perfectly respectable (although I would want to meet my agent or bank manager in them) and I can't see any sensible reason for wearing anything else.

I know no one what would ever dream of doing this! Get up, get dressed. Ready to start the day. What happens if a friend drops by in the evening at random and you’re in your PJs! Does this not happen? Do people not have friends these days.

Theres lots of threads in which people wearing pjs in the day crop up and it blows my mind every time. The things you learn.

I find it more weird that your have friends that would drop round unannounced 😂.. Do people still do that? If one of my friends showed up unexpectedly I’d assume something was up and me being in my PJs would be the last of my worries!

Close friends of mine still do that.

They just turn up on your doorstep? They don’t send a message first to make sure you’re in?? The only person who turns up at ours unannounced is my Mum and I love it when she does but then she wouldn’t judge me if I was in pjs.

imnothavingagoodtime · 10/12/2025 18:28

If I’m not going out at the weekend I’ll often wear PJs all day and then have a long bath and put on fresh PJs. It’s not weird, it’s wonderful. Your friends are missing out!

Genuine question-no friends randomly arriving? No lost delivery people? No quick trip to the shops? I don't want to be in pyjamas when there are other people around or even possibly around.

Yes! just in the neighbourhood, drop by. Entirely normal.

scalt · 11/12/2025 08:47

I love staying in my PJs on a slow morning. But just to confuse everyone, I don’t wear slippers with them - I wear trainers, usually without socks, because I like going in the garden, weather permitting.

littlemissalwaystired · 11/12/2025 08:48

I’m on mat leave and my baby isn’t here yet. What are proper clothes?Grin

My friends don’t randomly come over, they would message first and ask if we were in. IF that did happen they wouldn’t give a sh*t if I was in pjs, they’ve seen me look worse 😂..

Delivery drivers- I’m wearing shirt type pjs not a negligee so I don’t care about this.

But, no I haven’t reached the point of popping to the shops in my pjs. If I needed to go out I’d have to get dressed.

This doesn’t happen often, I rarely get a day where I’m not going out for some reason, but when it does I love it.

Yes, they just turn up. When l say “close friends”, they are “close” in 2 ways. They are also close in terms of distance. Always welcome.

If l’m not in, that’s a chance they take. They have to take me as they find me though, although that won’t be in PJs; don’t have any.

I have friends who randomly drop by. They wouldn't mind PJ's but they would think I might be unwell if I were wearing them during the day.
Prefer to meet delivery drivers fully dressed although I don't suppose they care.
Would never, ever go to the shops in pyjamas but I'm older and probably old fashioned.
Another factor is that mobile phone reception where I live is dodgy. I might message someone to see if they're in but the message might reach them after I do.

Whereas many people would find that incredibly rude - if someone turned up at my door unannounced I would assume someone had died 🫣

Honestly, my friends just turn up, as I do to them. Kettle on. Really not considered rude. If people come to see you, that's lovely. I don't understand the Mumsnet paranoia about random visitors at all.

xSideshowAuntSallyXx · 11/12/2025 09:03

I'm always in my pj's by 7pm so I can sit, relax and watch tv. In the mornings I get up, feed the cats then get dressed, I'm always out and about during the day so will always get dressed.

Summer is different because I tend to go out later in the evening when it's light.

Winterwonderwhy · 10/12/2025 18:29

Why do you care about what your friend thinks or does in her own home?

The friend has told the OP she is weird!

CanYouHereMeRoar · 11/12/2025 09:08

My PJs go on after my evening bath/shower, I wear smart casual five days per week for work so it's quite nice to wear something comfy before bed but I would feel a bit odd cooking in my PJs. In the weekend I get dressed mid morning after a leisurely breakfast, by that point I want to get ready for the day.

Only my in laws randomly drop by and it wouldn't phase me if they saw me in my jammies.

Who said I was paranoid?

I’m quite happy to have people over but IMO it’s rude to turn up without an invite and expect to be hosted - what if you’re sick, or in the bath, or in the middle of decorating, or having sex?

It’s just polite to send a text to make sure you’re welcome.

Boomer55 · 11/12/2025 09:08

I wouldn’t as I like an early shower and fresh day clothes on until bed time.

But each to their own. 👍

silkysoft · 11/12/2025 09:10

YANBU- go to any clothing website and there is whole section for loungewear and all of them look like various versions of PJs or yoga pants etc

If this wasnt common and popular it wouldnt exist.

Personally, I cant imagine why anyone would choose to wear jeans or smart trousers when just watching tv at home or pottering about. It seems bizarre to me.

I think it’s nice that you have people who just pop over for cuppa and chat. It’s just not something my friends and I do. I do think it depends on the community you live in. My mu constantly has people dropping in unexpectedly.
