Greggs - is it just me?

Or is it really over-rated? I’ve given up now, as every time I get a pastry it is lukewarm at best. The bacon rolls used to be nice but the bread is so floury now and I really don’t get the appeal over the sausage rolls.

that's been experience too but I think their sandwiches are decent and well priced compared to other shops.

I love a greggs sausage roll 😋 anything else I'm not to fussed

hyggetyggedotorg · 02/12/2025 16:22

I love a Greggs sausage roll or a tuna crunch baguette.

I seem to remember reading that they are no longer allowed to keep the hot things hot (but can’t remember why 😂). Unless you’re lucky enough to get something recently out of the oven it will be lukewarm.

Dramatic · 02/12/2025 16:22

Love Greggs, I'm in there almost every day.

TokyoSushi · 02/12/2025 16:23

I think it varies from shop to shop (although it shouldn't) but some Greggs are definitely better than others!

IamSmarticus · 02/12/2025 16:23

If they keep the pastry items hot or reheat them, they become subject to VAT which would increase the cost.

CloudSky · 02/12/2025 16:26

Love Greggs but I usually just buy the frozen Greggs pasties/sausage rolls from Iceland/food warehouse and cook them myself.

ExtraOnions · 02/12/2025 16:27

The don’t sell hot food for tax purposes. They cook it, then leave it to go cold … getting something hot from them is the luck of the draw. I would sooner pay a bit more for something hot

Yes, exactly. It’s not allowed to be hot legally.

I think they have done brilliantly, expanding out of Newcastle to absolutely everywhere. Primark, service stations and almost every high street in the country.

Ophy83 · 02/12/2025 16:40

I had terrible food poisoning after eating a bacon and cheese pastry from a Greggs on the m4. I assume it had been under the warm lights too long. Never again!

FastTurtle · 02/12/2025 16:42

I know it’s a cheap and cheerful place but I’ve noticed over the last six months it’s got worse. There’s a lot less protein in the baguettes etc and it doesn’t taste of much.
I still like the hot chocolate.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 02/12/2025 16:43

The baguettes are pretty good. Nice fresh bread.

inkognitha · 02/12/2025 16:47

Their vegan sausage roll is the best vegan dupe ever, and I m not even vegan

xanthomelana · 02/12/2025 16:54

Their pepperoni pizza is my favourite.

This is what I was going to say.

I had no idea they started in Newcastle . Good on them for expansion.

As a small little aside, when I was on holiday in the beautiful Northumberland, we stopped off in Seahouses where we came across a bakery called Trotters, that looked similar . Had a lovely slice of quiche .

Monty34 · 02/12/2025 16:55

Really gone off them. Too often too lukewarm. When they began they were consistently good. But they aren't like that now.

Kirbert2 · 02/12/2025 16:56

Nothing beats a Greggs sausage roll. I love their pizzas too.

They also do a good macaroni cheese.

UnimatrixZeroOne · 02/12/2025 16:56

I really like their pastry stuff but it's always so disappointingly cold or lukewarm.

MaloryJones · 02/12/2025 16:56

Like a PP does, I buy the Grreggs sausage rolls and steak bakes from the frozen aisle in Iceland .
At least they are hot when served up

RecordBreakers · 02/12/2025 17:02

I do like the sausage rolls, but have only ever been disappointed by the bakes / other pastries.

Recently, they haven't had cream for my treat hot chocolate at two different branches, which is more disappointing for me.

MyCatLovesCardboard · 02/12/2025 17:18

I don’t like a lukewarm cheese & onion pasty so I buy the frozen ones occasionally and they’re delicious.

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 02/12/2025 17:33

As others have said, Greggs don't serve hot food.

Noone goes to Gregg's because it's nice. They go to Gregg's because it's easy.

You want something nice, go elsewhere.

cramptramp · 02/12/2025 17:34

Steak bakes. Yum.

WonderfulSmith · 02/12/2025 17:35

I don’t get the love either. They have a habit of opening up near independent bakers and driving them out of business. And how are they a bakers, they don't sell bread?
