Greggs - is it just me?

Or is it really over-rated? I’ve given up now, as every time I get a pastry it is lukewarm at best. The bacon rolls used to be nice but the bread is so floury now and I really don’t get the appeal over the sausage rolls.

The stottie from Northern ‘80s Greggs was sublime. I wish you could get them down south.

Noshowlomo · 02/12/2025 17:43

Yeah its gone shit. Many years ago they did they cheese savoury crunchy baguette things and they were INCREDIBLE! Nothing like that now it’s all bland

hyggetyggedotorg · 02/12/2025 16:22

I love a Greggs sausage roll or a tuna crunch baguette.

I seem to remember reading that they are no longer allowed to keep the hot things hot (but can’t remember why 😂). Unless you’re lucky enough to get something recently out of the oven it will be lukewarm.

I’m the same love myself a sausage roll or a tuna crunch lol

ComfortFoodCafe · 02/12/2025 17:45

They used to be amazing, gone to shit now and very overpriced.

BillieWiper · 02/12/2025 17:53

Yeah it's shite. I've never timed it so I got a hot pastry. So I guess that makes it seem worse.

The sausage rolls are proper gross though. The meat is so bland and fatty.

I'd say the steak bake or the festive bake are probably the best two things. But they've gone downhill over the last ten years. Much less meat in them. And meat can be really chewy.

I liked the pumpkin spice latte but only because it masks the taste of poor quality machine dishwater they pass off as coffee?!

The pizza looks ridiculous. Like something made by four year olds. Not tried it though so maybe it's lovely?

dementedpixie · 02/12/2025 17:56

In the olden days they did a meat and potato pasty and would stick it back in oven if you wanted it heated up. We used to buy a 3 course meal; pasty as a starter, a big softy as a main and a cake for pudding

Happyjoe · 02/12/2025 17:57

Wasn't the owner locked up for child abuse? Can't remember.
Years since eaten but I used to like the cheese salad rolls, had mayo and branston on it, it just worked!

Merseymum1980 · 02/12/2025 17:59

Hate it, expect for the sugar strand donughts

JasmineTea11 · 02/12/2025 18:01

It's shit food. Perfect for hangovers though.

TheDandyLion · 02/12/2025 18:03

More Gregg's than McDonald's in the UK. It's cheap scran and just fine.

mammajulie · 02/12/2025 18:07

Monty34 · 02/12/2025 16:55

Really gone off them. Too often too lukewarm. When they began they were consistently good. But they aren't like that now.

In the 1930s?

WhatASmashingBlouseYouHaveOn · 02/12/2025 18:09

Yeah, getting sick of the so called hot pastries not being hot or even warm if you time it wrong. At my last visit I asked the cashier "are any of the pasties hot?" She waffled on about how they aren't under hot lamps or in hot food cabinets anymore and they haven't been like that for the last 3 years.

I said, I understand that, I'm just asking are any of those items in there right now hot? She wouldn't tell me, I got a spicy chicken sandwich instead which I actually really enjoyed. It was certainly healthier than a sausage roll!

MyAmusedPearlSquid · 02/12/2025 18:10

As a former employee of greggs the reason behind sausage rolls etc cold was mostly because we done alot of bakes etc early morning ready for the 6.30am trade they do cook them during the day as required but mostly it will be cold the food has gone down hill tbh i only eat their now on occasion and it is usually a sausage roll

ElReverendoGreen · 02/12/2025 18:10

Totally agree OP. I haven’t had a greggs for about 10 years, possibly longer.

cold and greasy

FastTurtle · 02/12/2025 18:12

Kirbert2 · 02/12/2025 16:56

Nothing beats a Greggs sausage roll. I love their pizzas too.

They also do a good macaroni cheese.

Ooooh yes, the pizzas are good, sort of oily in a delicious way.

TangoWhiskeyAlphaTango2 · 02/12/2025 18:13

Like everything else in life they are too expensive for what is very basic food. We have one right by work but I won't pay their prices anymore.

BettyBobble · 02/12/2025 18:15

Went in one morning from r a sausage and omlette roll. Lady said the omlettes hadn't been delivered. I never even realised they didn't cook them fresh

JacknDiane · 02/12/2025 18:15

Their coffee is great and you can't beat a greggs sausage roll

iSage · 02/12/2025 18:17

Their flatbread sandwiches are nice.

Boogiemam · 02/12/2025 18:20

As a Geordie no longer in the NE, I should love Greggs but lately I've found it disappointing when I reminisce. It's either the nostalgia effect, it's gone downhill or both.

I was shocked the NE ones stopped making ham and pease pudding stotties. The stotties themselves are disappointing now too, I used to grab them whenever I was visiting family but get them elsewhere now. I seem to remember the cakes being amazing as a child l, now it's the same dry ass fairy cakes with whatever random seasonal icing or donuts. Boring. And getting rid of the Mexican Chicken Oval Bite was sheer madness.

OneBadKitty · 02/12/2025 18:28

Never understood the popularity of Greggs other than it's cheap prices.

All the pastries are soggy and floppy, sausage rolls are filled with sausage slurry, chicken pasties are literally filled with sick!

OnlyTheBravest · 02/12/2025 18:33

Loved the frozen range during the teen years. Kept them out of the kitchen endlessly searching for snacks.

Pollqueen · 02/12/2025 18:33

No clue, never bought anything from Greggs but from what I have seen, it all looks beige and unappetising

Monty34 · 02/12/2025 18:40

mammajulie · 02/12/2025 18:07

In the 1930s?

Ha ! No, I didn't word that very well, I meant when they became mainstream everywhere. At first good. Then downhill.

80smonster · 02/12/2025 18:44

I can confirm our local G’s only serves cold everything. 😂
