Greggs - is it just me?

Or is it really over-rated? I’ve given up now, as every time I get a pastry it is lukewarm at best. The bacon rolls used to be nice but the bread is so floury now and I really don’t get the appeal over the sausage rolls.

Love Greggs. It’s not fine dining but really reasonably priced compared to most places and tasty.

I don’t get the love either. They have a habit of opening up near independent bakers and driving them out of business. And how are they a bakers, they don't sell bread?

They do sell bread…

but maybe I’m lucky because I’m in Newcastle and we have the best and the most Greggs!

Sparklesandspandexgallore · 02/12/2025 19:49

I only go in for a coffee when I get a free one. Their jam biscuits are nice but I prefer the other bakeries in town for everything else.

Lovelynames123 · 02/12/2025 19:50

We love Greggs, corned beef bake for me and sausage rolls for the dc. I usually try to use independent places but I live in Newcastle so it does kind of feel like supporting local!

I know a lot of people who work for them, good company to work for and support a lot of causes, and if you happen to get there as they've just put out freshly baked goods it's amazing!

Butchyrestingface · 02/12/2025 19:50

Greggs is alright but I prefer Baynes. Unfortunately there aren't too many of those and no sit-in facilities. Their filled rolls are lush though. 😋

AnonAnonmystery · 02/12/2025 19:55

Vegan sausage roll for me. I do wish it was hot though!

Joeninety · 02/12/2025 21:29

A hot food outlet that has to wait until their products are cold before they can sell them, without attracting extra taxes.........................This manky country in a nutshell now ?!

Wrongsaidfredd · 02/12/2025 21:31

Greggs is amazing, I go at least twice a week. It’s now taken over McDonald’s in terms of popularity. About fucking time McDonalds is so “mid”

Pearlmaster500 · 02/12/2025 21:32

Vile.. if im getting a sausage roll it’s got to be wenzels!

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 02/12/2025 17:33

As others have said, Greggs don't serve hot food.

Noone goes to Gregg's because it's nice. They go to Gregg's because it's easy.

You want something nice, go elsewhere.

Years ago I remember an awful flight home from a lovely holiday, very delayed because of weather issues, as we walked through the Arrivals door there were a Greggs and a Costa facing us, we thought we'd died and gone to heaven, we were so hungry!

Just discovered the vegetable slice

it’s so good

The don’t sell hot food for tax purposes. They cook it, then leave it to go cold … getting something hot from them is the luck of the draw. I would sooner pay a bit more for something hot

Me too!

being vegetarian there's never anything hot anymore.

I love a Greggs sausage roll or a tuna crunch baguette.

I seem to remember reading that they are no longer allowed to keep the hot things hot (but can’t remember why 😂). Unless you’re lucky enough to get something recently out of the oven it will be lukewarm.

They are allowed to keep hot things hot, they’d just have to pay more tax. So they’d rather keep the price down and not sell hot food.

Oh no wonder the veg bake was gross the other day. Duh me.

WoahThreeAces · 02/12/2025 21:41

Bloody love Greggs. Never had anything from there I didn't like. Baguette and a coffee, excellent lunch on my busy out and about work days. Plus the app is great, I'm always getting free stuff.
Team Greggs here 💯

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 02/12/2025 21:51

I love the chicken bakes 😋

HRTQueen · 02/12/2025 21:52

AutumnLeavesFallingFast · 02/12/2025 21:38

It is good HOT.

they were very warm it’s a busy Greggs (I don’t know a Greg’s that isn’t busy) mayeb that’s the difference

I had no idea that they didn’t serve hot food as everything I’ve bought has always been at least warm unless not meant to be

CalmShaker · 02/12/2025 22:00

I used to enjoy the odd bacon bap from them but I noticed the staff never wash their hands/wear gloves and go from opening the roll to the till to handling loose change. It's not very nice. Parsons Bakery much better

tinytemper66 · 02/12/2025 22:05

Corned beef pasties are lush.

Our one 'bakes' them very early in the morning, then they sit there getting colder & colder.

ours is pretty busy, but I'm guessing lots of nest eaters, so get topped up?!

it's good really because I then don't buy/eat them 🤣

Empress13 · 02/12/2025 22:27

Their sausage rolls are greasy loveliness 😜

Moaning5 · 02/12/2025 22:27

I love the cheese pizzas - not like a proper pizza, more like a school pizza from the 90’s - weird but yummy !

I always wondered why everything was cold - now I know !

Topseyt123 · 02/12/2025 22:29

I absolutely love their vegan sausage rolls. I'm not even vegan, though I am vegetarian.

DorisTheFinkasaurus · 02/12/2025 22:46

Oh I love a chicken bake/sausage roll/Tottenham cake (still served in London)! I won't say a bad word about Greggs. And I guess the ones I go to are very busy so the hot food doesn't sit around long enough to go cold.
