I remember watching a documentary years ago looking at how various lottery winners had faired several years down the line. It was depressing really, mostly utter stupidity by some young 20 something’s winning a million quid or so, quitting their jobs, going on fancy holidays with their mates, buying insanely expensive cars before being skint and living with their parents three years later having pissed it all away. They honestly thought they could retire at that age and live like a rock star.

Charlotte Church did the same.

Charlotte Church did the same.

She obviously should have had much better advisors at her young age - unless she did but she refused to listen to them, maybe.

I suppose, at least for Charlotte, it wasn't explicitly a one-off big win on the lottery or a gameshow that wouldn't be repeated. As far as she was concerned, she was a rock star (well, OK, different genre!) and that was now her (high-paying) profession that could last forever.

Unfortunately, as with the majority of big music stars, the fame and the fortune doesn't always last forever, and you have to seize it whilst you can and prepare for when it's over and the money stops flooding in. For every Paul McCartney or Elton John, there are a thousand flash-in-the-pan music stars who hit the big time and then plummet back again just as quickly. It doesn't mean that they aren't talented - often very far from it; but the public can be very fickle indeed, and they are the ones with the power to make/keep you rich or... not so rich.
