Yes. The new Squid Games where it cuts off to them in the room talking about their childhood. I don’t give a shit.

OMG, yes!

But it’s the manipulative programme makers and the easily manipulated viewers that are the motivators.

TheTicklishNavyFatball · 22/11/2025 20:29

This annoyed me too. Everybody seems to have a sad / heartwarming backstory prepared … but it seems so fake and unconvincing. Cant people just want to win for themselves?

Zov · 22/11/2025 20:31

I agree. Maybe I'm a heartless, cold, old fish, but IDGAF about the lives, or personal battles in life, or sob stories, of people on TV shows! (I'm not overly interested in hearing about peoples shit in real life truth be told. We've all got a story to tell.)

Sooooooooooo many shows are ruined because of this... It started with Pop Idol, and trickled into X Factor, and Britain's Got Talent. Then it started to spill over into shows like 60 Minute Makeover, and 10 Years Younger, and The Big Build, and Ground Force etc. No-one was allowed on these shows without a sob story.

NOW it's on Ambulance, 24 Hours in A & E, and similar 'reality tv shows' of the emergency services and so on. The actual police/paramedics/midwives/nurses/doctors etc. have all got a (sob) story to tell now. I did laugh the other week when one young resident doctor (in training) was giving us a story of how he was so upset as his grandad died a few months ago. At 93. He was 93 dude. 93!!! Many people tend to die at that age. Some people die younger!

GaIadriel · 22/11/2025 20:33

I agree. I saw a clip from a game show the other day where a guy basically gave £300k away to this woman.

I don't know the back story but he'd told her he wasn't bluffing and she was like "are you sure you're not messing with me?" He wasn't and she won the money. He was like "well, you've got a family to support". All the comments were about what a fine humble gent he was.

I just remember being a bit cynical and wondering whether anybody would've done the same for him. The woman in question didn't seem too guilty about taking the money. Her main concern seemed to be whether he was bluffing or not. Would've been hilarious if he'd been like "haha, got you there sucka". 🤣🤣🤣

Bundleflower · 22/11/2025 20:34

The producers practically demand this shit. I hate it. I was delighted to see the back of X-factor for this reason. I don’t give a shite that your neighbours Nan’s dog has died. Just sing and then shut up ffs.
Reminds me of my mums Take a Break magazines. Makes my teeth itch.

I’m always fascinated by the ‘shock’ of someone’s death when the person is something like 85 years old. How much of a shock is it, really?

Vitriolinsanity · 22/11/2025 20:37

If I was a contestant on Deal or No Deal I would know by now that one needs to punt upwards to get the Bankers offer. If you say, new kitchen, want to take DNana on a luxury cruise you’re never going to top £16k.

Go large: at least £30k FGS. The programme has been running 20 years, when will these suckers cop on?

Bruisername · 22/11/2025 20:41

DD(15) and I have a running joke that whenever something bad happens to us ‘it’s our story for x factor’

oh Simon, a few months ago I stubbed my toe and then the dog had to go to the vet and we thought he might have cancer but he didn’t in the end and then someone stole our wheelie bin’

I'm obsessed with the idea of him stressing trying to thinking of something bad thats happened to him and that having to do

They are pushed into it. I always fast forward the make them cry parts where the judges are clearly going to keep going until there are tears. I never understand why the contestant says they are doing this for their dead nana etc. No, you are doing it for yourself, dead relatives have no interest any more!

EveryKneeShallBow · 22/11/2025 20:49

I get newsletters from a health charity. On a recent one they sent a request from the makers of Bake Off - Do you have a story about your journey with xxxxx disease? Apply now for the new series.

its the whole victim narrative of modern life

my friend works with one of their school friends and they are both from a minority group. So when it was the relevant week their employer asked them to speak at an event about the challenges they faced. My friend refused because didn’t feel had faced any challenges! The friend did it and talked about their difficult time being bullied at school and my friend was like ‘what did you say that for?’ And Reply was ‘well I had to come up with something!’

mumofoneAloneandwell · 22/11/2025 20:55

Victimhood is currency in today's society!

It might not be a shock but it can still be a difficult time

its just the fact everyone is expected to have a sob story - why don’t we ask people what’s gone well for them instead

It's the only reason they get the gig half the time.
As long as you are prepared to sell your soul for a bob or two and declare your anal bleaching habit to the nation you will be allowed your 15 minutes of fame. Often it's how they whittle down contestants, how desperate they seem to get the people at home onside rather than hoping the investment banker doesn't win the jackpot and coming away feeling life is unfair. Keeping the dream alive my friend, fake as it may be.
