Don’t know why I hate i?! Does anyone else?

I shower on working days (3 x per week) and if meeting up with friends etc, but if i’m off for a while, I don’t, is that gross? I could easily go a week if only doing school drop off and food shop, dog walks

I dont every day- on advice of my dermatologist i have skin conditions and if i shower every day it worsens. I WFH home most days and dont do strenese exercise, again to chronic pain condition as well. When i shower i have to sit and wait for all my cream to soak in before i get dressed so it takes time. I tend to use bath more in eves instead, as i have stuff that helps my skin as well as it helps my pain. I only wash my hair once a week, its very long thick hair that takes a while to wash and dry but it doesn't get greasy really, might need dry shampoo towards end of week

Just wondering, do you find transitions - interrupting what you're doing, even it's sitting down watching TV, that kind of thing - irritating?

Stopping to shower and wash hair could be something you dislike because it's disturbing to get up, get undressed, put the clothes in the wash, run the shower, try to get the right temperature, get in, get washed, do hair, rinse hair, condition hair, turn the now comfortable hot water off and get cold, get a towel that then feels wet and you feel cold, go and put on fresh clothes/nightclothes, etc, etc.

Yes all of that feels a faff sometimes

You assert that you can tell, but if you meet someone who looks well groomed and doesn't smell 'stale', then HOW can you tell?

There's a fresh look. There is nothing wrong with not looking "fresh" everyday, I definitely don't, I'm guilty of washing the essentials at times, never over 2 days.

JaninaDuszejko · 12/11/2025 16:18

I swim every morning and shower and wash my hair afterwards. I have short hair to facilitate this. I love having showers and would hate to not be able to shower or bath every day.

I always find it surprising that some people choose to only wash their hair once a week, even if you have a dry scalp and hair and don't want to use shampoo that often surely you still need a co-wash to remove dirt and sweat? I think if you've got long hair and can't be bothered because of the time it takes you might be better off with shorter hair.

drspouse · 12/11/2025 16:19

Shower or bath - yes, with a very few exceptions (e.g. have a bath before bed, get up the next day and travel somewhere, go to bed, shower the next morning).
Wash my hair, no, that happens twice a week.

I hate this, there is plenty of people with adhd who live in a tidy clean home and wash themselves daily, run businesses, show up.
It is "can't be bothered" mode, procrastination at its finest, labelled as ND.

Wow, that’s nice. I wasn’t talking about Adhd, I was talking about autism possibly, I’m definitely not lazy

Hair once a week as it's very dry.

Skin also very dry so shower twice a week, even then after copious moisturising my skin takes a day to not feel like parchment.

Otherwise a daily wash at the sink to tackle the smelly parts.

It's an essential faff.
Going an entire week isn't good, how many times would you think about doing it, it probably causes more stress putting it off, building up anxiety.

Mapletree1985 · 12/11/2025 16:24

My hair and skin dries out so much after a shower that if I can get away with not showering, I will. Baths are out of the question. My skin feels two sizes smaller afterwards.

I don’t get anxious though, i’m just relaxed at home and quite happy, I don’t smell, would have been told if I did

I shower and wash my hair every day. Thats more than is necessary, but I like to be fresh. IMO if you shower and hair wash once a week you won’t smell good. I have relatives like this and when they’ve gone the room needs airing and the pillows smell. There’s a happy middle ground somewhere, say every second day or third at the very very most.

mickandrorty · 12/11/2025 16:26

I hate showering its boring, but by the time you've washed your face and bits in the sink you might as well just jump in the shower!

ForZanyAquaViewer · 12/11/2025 16:26

I like the actual process of showering. I find the whole thing very enjoyable, and I do it in the morning. It’s how I was raised to start the day.

I wash my hair about once every ten days. I’m Black and our haircare needs are VERY different. If I washed it every day, I wouldn’t have very much of it left and I’d lose half the working day. 🤣

Is it the actual doing you don’t like, OP? Or is it more about gearing yourself up to do it?

wishIwasonaBeach · 12/11/2025 16:26

Each to their own I guess and my husband is like this but I'm the opposite. I can't bear feeling grubby and will shower always once and sometimes twice a day. I do only wash my hair once a week as it's thick and takes 14 hours to dry 😂

HessianSack · 12/11/2025 16:28

Maybe you need a nicer shower? I shower every morning and every time I exercise (properly, not dog walking). I wash my hair about twice a week.

Halfwaytheree · 12/11/2025 16:28

I shower at least once a day, but usually twice. I love showering so much, I use gorgeous shower products and I find super hot water relaxing.

I don’t wash my hair daily. I usually go for every 2/3 days. If I put my hair in a bun, it doesn’t usually get wet in the shower.

lostintranslation148 · 12/11/2025 16:04

I'm like you OP, don't need to be showering every 5 minutes. It's really drying in our hard water and if I was in the shower all the time even if I didn't wash my hair it would be horribly frizzy from the humidity.

I couldn't care less if people think it's dirty and gross, it saves money, is much better for the environment and no one would know unless I told them. I do have a bath rather than a shower though because I like a good soak and don't feel clean just standing under a spray of water for 2 minutes.

I don't understand how people feel clean from showering even if they do it every 5 minutes. Maybe that's why they feel they need to?

Who is doing it every five minutes? What a bizarre thing to say. How is once a day excessive? Plus a bath uses much more water than a shower...

Feel much cleaner with a two minute shower where the dirty water runs away, rather than sitting in human soup for half an hour. Horses for courses isn't it?

You’re someone who doesn’t shower and you have a dog, of course you and your house will stink.

Toutafait · 12/11/2025 16:30

I know what you mean, OP. I don't think you should feel there's anything wrong with not showering every day, just because most other people do. The bottom line is whether other people think you smell, have greasy hair, etc. And that will depend on your lifestyle and on the local climate. If it's winter and your house isn't overheated and you don't do vigorous exercise, then showering once every 2 days is totally fine. And you can probably shower every 3 days if you use a flannel or wipe on smelly parts of the body occasionally. That's what lorry drivers do when they sleep in their trucks. Not so long ago, people used to have a bath (or go to the public baths) once a week, and use a flannel on the other days. Much better for the environment.

I hate showering but I do so every day . I think it’s because i hate coming out the shower into the cold .

SpigTheFish · 12/11/2025 16:32

I shower every day but i hate it. It's boring and i hate feeling cold afterwards. I suck it up though.

My house doesn’t stink, I have cleaners once a week, I don’t stink either. I did say if i’m on holidays/ not working going out really, but this is not a regular thing! But I don’t shower every day, always on work days and meeting friends etc

TreeDudette · 12/11/2025 16:36

I'm autistic and showering is not my friend. I do it everyday as long as my morning follows routine. If I have to step off course even slightly then showering becomes something I just can't do. I had to get up first this morning instead of second so now I am a minger and didn't shower.

I don't like the transition from warm bed to removing clothes, to being wet, to towelling, to being chilly, to dressing. If I can just get jammies off and clothes on it is so much easier. Bathing is no better, same number of transitions.

Once in the shower I am ok with cosmetics that smell of roses but don't like most others. I won't shower if there is a shower curtain - they are cold and slimy and touch you. If my towels aren't perfect then that is horrible too. Damp bathmats - yuck. Overall it is a sensory minefield I'd rather avoid.

But my hair get's greasy so after 1 day without a shower my head itches and that is a worse sensory nightmare so I am driven back into the shower. I'd be happy never to shower again if I could remain clean and un-itchy without.

You are not alone.

Yeah but the dog smell is just another factor on top of infrequent showers, it’s an extra smell that will linger in your clothes, hair, bedding etc. how often do you wash your dog?

Sprangle · 12/11/2025 16:41

I find it a bit of a faff too, but I do shower every day. I wash my hair about twice a week, and the rest of the time use a shower cap to keep my hair completely dry- I always found the wet hair was the most annoying bit! Is your bathroom chilly? I find it much easier now I've got a much warmer bathroom, and a towel sitting on a heated rail within arms reach. I can't bear being cold and wet, and in my old bathroom I would do an old fashioned strip wash at the basin on the really icy mornings- it was less faff, much quicker, and much more bearable! Or if you have a hand shower over your bath then sit in the bath (as if you were having a bath), and hose yourself down, soap, and wash yourself that way. Somehow you stay warmer when sitting rather than standing under the shower starkers, and there's less water splashing about so less steam and drips to clean up. I basically persevered, but found the ways that kept the faff to a minimum! 😂
