Don’t know why I hate i?! Does anyone else?

I shower on working days (3 x per week) and if meeting up with friends etc, but if i’m off for a while, I don’t, is that gross? I could easily go a week if only doing school drop off and food shop, dog walks

I shower every morning. I can't do anything until I shower, just habit I guess.
I wash my hair once or twuce a week as it takes so long to dry and style and I work from home anyway so doesnt need to be perfect.

I don't judge you though, shower when you like as long as you don't smell and your hands and face are washed then I don't see the issue.

Why?

I was wondering this as I’m similar to the OP with regard to washing and I am severely depressed

Are you ND by any chance?

I have ADHD and it takes all my might to force myself to shower regularly. However as you’ve described - if I don’t have anywhere to be in person it falls by the wayside! I’m good for 2-3 days and then it falls apart.

It’s strange because I’m hygiene obsessed - the skin on my hands is so dry because of how much I wash my hands. But I just can’t get myself in gear.

It’s also only in the last year that I regularly brush my teeth morning & night too (and I’m late 30s). I was always good at doing them in the morning but I could never remember to do them at night & when I remembered I couldn’t physically be bothered! I’ve cracked that because I have a goal to be looking my best by 40 and part of that was a smile makeover, so dental hygiene needed to be prioritised but it’s taken so much brain space and effort for me to make this happen.

It blows my mind that NT people just brush their teeth and shower without thinking about it!

This sounds like me too, possibly ND…I do wonder if this is part of it

I shower every single day even if I’m ill or am staying home alone. I can’t imagine ever doing differently, like others have said I like feeling fresh. Unwashed people have a smell - sorry but it’s true. Nothing you can cover up with perfume, it’s unmistakably ‘stale’.

My bingo card is out again 🙄

Is it really too much to expect posters to remember that not everyone is able to shower every day? Claiming that everyone who doesn't shower every day 'smells' is awful.

Bogfrog · 12/11/2025 16:10

Bath twice a day, wash hair every other day. Can’t imagine not cleaning myself every day

Cranarc · 12/11/2025 16:10

I shower and hair wash every day if I have got sweaty or gone to the gym. If neither of those things has happened I shower and hairwash every other day. On the non shower days I always wash face, pits and bits.

EatMoreChocolate44 · 12/11/2025 16:10

You will get a mixture of responses OP, some people think if you don't shower every day you smell, your disgusting, have mental health problems etc! 🙈 I shower every other day and wash my hair and shave then too. I don't smell, it's better for my skin, electricity bill is smaller and it's better for the environment. Personally I think every second day is fine unless you've exercised or it's very hot.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 12/11/2025 16:10

CasperGutman · 12/11/2025 16:08

You have no way of knowing how many of the non-smelly people you meet have daily showers. Many may shower on alternate days, for example. Yes, if a person doesn't shower for long enough they'll smell. But exactly how long that takes will vary between individuals, activities, temperature, etc.

ETA: but yes, going a week without a shower is a bit much!

You can tell, it isn't difficult.

PizzaPowder · 12/11/2025 16:11

I shower every day (if i'm going to leave the house) Have some lazy sundays where i don't. I wash my hair as little as possible.

Twice a day is over the top for anyone

My whole life i detested showering, and it took until moving into my own place that i figured out it was because in my family home, it was always done in the morning and the house was always colder than was comfortable to me (its a me problem, I run cold!) Switched to showering in the afternoon or evening before bed in my nice warm house and stopped feeling this way. Could it be a time/temperature thing with you?

Edit to add: suspect i am ND

It’s true I find it easier in the summer

Yes I shower and wash my hair every day without fail although I’m in the minority in my friendship circle .

You are right. And generally what smells, if people adhere to basic bodily hygiene without necessarily showering, is clothes that have not been washed.

Zov · 12/11/2025 16:12

I shower every morning, and then also in the late afternoon after my daily 2-3 mile walk. I only wash my hair every 3 days though. Why are you washing your hair every day?

I wasn't commenting on the OP. It was another poster who said they used to shower daily but now can only manage it twice a week. I'm not saying they do have an issue with their mental health, just that if it was me I would be concerned. I have a family member who has struggled with depression and personal hygiene is one of the first things that seems to be affected.
Wishing you well.

You can tell, it isn't difficult.

How on earth can you say that someone doesn't smell because they showered that day, or because they don't actually smell bad? You simply don't know unless you're in the bathroom with them that morning.

If I miss a day washing my hair it is very greasy by the next day.

drinkwaterx · 12/11/2025 16:13

I shower every day at least once a day

Sometimes its morning and night.
Even if I'm ill I will still drag my arse in the shower every day.
I wash my hair about 3 times a week.

chocaholic73 · 12/11/2025 16:14

It's societal pressure that the norm has become to shower and, probably hair wash, every day. If you had a manual job or did tons of sweat inducing exercise, you would clearly need to. Growing up in the sixties, bath night was Sunday. Hot water came out of a geyser in the bathroom or a smaller ascot thing in the kitchen which was where my mum would wash my hair over the sink. Of course, times have changed, we expect to have hot water throughout our homes and heating when needed but I've heard it's actually not good for your skin to shower every day - dries it out. I shower 2 or 3 times a week and that's fine.

I hate this, there is plenty of people with adhd who live in a tidy clean home and wash themselves daily, run businesses, show up.
It is "can't be bothered" mode, procrastination at its finest, labelled as ND.

You assert that you can tell, but if you meet someone who looks well groomed and doesn't smell 'stale', then HOW can you tell?

handsdownthebest · 12/11/2025 16:14

I shower at least once a day, and when exercising twice a day.
However, I hate washing my hair so dry shampoo comes in handy. Probably wash my hair twice a week unless I’m going out out.

Crikey. Well that's everyone told then.

It takes 2 minutes to shower. 5 with hair wash
