To find this weird and a bit cringy

This is light hearted but I still find it odd. So my BIL always stands on his tiptoes in photos to make himself look taller. He’s not even particularly short- about 5’10” . He looks ridiculous in the photos but he doesn’t want to appear shorter than any of the women - but he doesn’t seem to mind looking silly .

Please share an example so we can all see how silly he looks!

matthewMATTHEW · 12/11/2025 11:09

Why does it bother you 😂

Lightandlove · 12/11/2025 11:10

😂😂😂😂😂

ShortColdandGrey · 12/11/2025 11:11

I would get everyone else in the picture to stand on their tip toes as well. I am really short so I would also drag over a chair to stand on if there was one nearby 😂

meganorks · 12/11/2025 11:11

Yeah, pretty cringey and pathetic. But then so many women seem to state they wouldn't date anyone under 6ft or at least some height that is significantly above theirs. I literally can't think of anything less important.

My own MIL was horrified when I said I was wearing heals at my wedding as it would make me taller than my DH. And she certainly couldn't seem to comprehend that he also did not give a shit

Bundleflower · 12/11/2025 11:12

Hahahhahaha you need to share a picture

meganorks · 12/11/2025 11:12

😳

Simonjt · 12/11/2025 11:12

You could buy him some lifts for christmas 🤣

noidea69 · 12/11/2025 11:13

In fairness, women have caused this problem, with all the bullshit about how tall a guy must, and how any man under 6ft is basically pathetic.

On the contrary, I think many men have an obsession with women having to be small and petite. So some women wanting men to be bigger could be in response to wanting to feel smaller in comparison.

35965a · 12/11/2025 11:19

So weird and insecure. Similar to sucking in your stomach in every photo I guess, which a lot of people do!

Mistyglade · 12/11/2025 11:28

Not really. Most people pull a pose for the camera.

youalright · 12/11/2025 11:29

I don't know why people are laughing he obviously has low self esteem and struggling with his appearance would you all be laughing at a woman breathing in to flatten their stomach for a photo or angling their face to avoid getting a double chin

BauhausOfEliott · 12/11/2025 11:39

It’s no different from standing at an angle to look slimmer, lifting your head to avoid a double chin, taking your glasses off or holding your belly in for a photo, really.

Everyone has some little insecurities, whether they’re appearance related or otherwise. No need to pick them apart.

No but I did use to laugh when people did ridiculous pouts as it looks ridiculous. Maybe they were struggling with low self esteem? I know I laughed because I can picture it looking completely daft - I wasn’t laughing at him having low self esteem.

YorkshirePuddingsGreatestFan · 12/11/2025 11:47

I've got relatives and she's taller than him. She always does a sort of half squat and hunches her shoulders in photos so she she looks shorter than him. It just makes her look like a weird hobbit though!

rainbowunicorn22 · 12/11/2025 11:54

years ago, it was considered weird if the woman was taller than the man, but these days it does not matter.
Obviously, your BIL has a hang-up over his height. Stick him at the back, no one will see him

Men being judged for their size and treated like physical appearance is above all else? If only women were treated like this for the past century, then maybe we’d have more empathy. Oh wait..

A bit of your own medicine never killed anyone🙂

My first employer wore lifts. He was touchy about his height and, I recently discovered, his age. He was born five years earlier than he pretended to be. He tried to get me into a relationship with him when I was 17/18 in 1981 when he was in fact born in 1947 not 1952 as he claimed back then. It's creeped me out lately even though it was decades ago. His behaviour towards me messed me up for a long time and it's sort of lodged.

Lifts - definitely. : )

Yeah, I'm not so keen on laughing at people's insecurities. But saying that I hate myself in photos.

sothatsthat · 12/11/2025 12:10

Yep, that's awful and very embarrassing indeed. I do feel sorry for him tbh. He must have very low self esteem about his height.

In fairness, women have caused this problem, with all the bullshit about how tall a guy must, and how any man under 6ft is basically pathetic.

For starters, it's not 'a problem' if some men can't get any woman they want because some women prefer tall men. It's just something men under 6 foot (75%) need to accept, and find a woman who doesn't mind.
Secondly, women did not create the stereotype that men should be tall strong and powerful and women smaller and weaker. Men did.
If that's been a bit of a own goal for the men who don't meet the standards set by men in a man's world, that's a shame.
Women don't love having to be conventionally attractive and perpetually youthful much either. Sad times all round.

DontBuyANewMumCashmere · 12/11/2025 12:41

I have said YANBU however I am very tall and often sort of crouch down/hunker down for group photos - is that similar?!
