To find this weird and a bit cringy

This is light hearted but I still find it odd. So my BIL always stands on his tiptoes in photos to make himself look taller. He’s not even particularly short- about 5’10” . He looks ridiculous in the photos but he doesn’t want to appear shorter than any of the women - but he doesn’t seem to mind looking silly .

I can't say that the requirement for men (for romantic purposes) to be over 6ft is something within my friendship groups.

Is it really something that women are demanding, or is it something that men are saying that women are demanding (as an excuse for women not dating them, because it obviously can't be their awful personalities)?

Why does it bother you 😂

Oh come on. Do you not find it cringe as well as funny? 😂

QueenClinomania · 12/11/2025 12:53

When you take a photo you should yell everyone stand on tiptoes and say cheese

I have read enough threads on here to know it absolutely is a thing for some women. Some. Not all, nowhere near all. Just a preference some have. We all have preferences.

For me, height is something i dont care about. My husband is 5ft 8 which is plenty tall enough

What a cheesecake.

Goditsmemargaret · 12/11/2025 12:58

I see.

Does nobody here pull their shoulders back, tummy in and arrange their feet and body into a flattering angle for photos?

No more so than the sucking in stomachs or angling chins other people refer to upthread -- people have insecurities about being photographed.

The one photo habit that irrationally irritates me is the vaguely red-carpet-y 'standing with one leg in front of the other' pose, especially when a bunch of women standing in a line are all doing it. I think it reminds me of those naff bridesmaid photos where there are loads of bridesmaids all posing symmetrically with one leg forward n either side of the bride.

Dollymylove · 12/11/2025 13:13

Bundleflower · 12/11/2025 11:46

No but I did use to laugh when people did ridiculous pouts as it looks ridiculous. Maybe they were struggling with low self esteem? I know I laughed because I can picture it looking completely daft - I wasn’t laughing at him having low self esteem.

Oh my God the pouting. My DIL, lovely girl otherwise, always does the pout on photos.
I really truly wish she wouldnt 😂😂

nomas · 12/11/2025 13:15

It's probably a family in joke.

Sounds like you are picking on him for a very small thing.

CowTown · 12/11/2025 13:16

One of my friends does this (photo attached). My FIL does it too.

Otherwise you risk looking like you have the stance of an American Football Linebacker.

In fairness, women have caused this problem, with all the bullshit about how tall a guy must, and how any man under 6ft is basically pathetic.

This isn't even a thing.

Oh dear! The shoes are making this look like a child on tiptoes 🙈

Definitely a middle-aged man.

BunnyLake · 12/11/2025 13:27

Mistyglade · 12/11/2025 11:28

Not really. Most people pull a pose for the camera.

🫣 guilty of stomach sucking

ThatChristmasMug · 12/11/2025 13:27

Women don't love having to be conventionally attractive and perpetually youthful much either.

no one is making us.

I like trying to be as attractive and youth-looking (ish) as I can get away with, so? There are worst goals.

Most people try to look their best on photo, why wouldn't you? It's a bit weird when he's that obvious, but how many women use filters on photos, that's obvious too. Some people don't mind looking silly and obvious when trying to improve their appearance, same thing.

Ciccici · 12/11/2025 13:28

youalright · 12/11/2025 11:29

I don't know why people are laughing he obviously has low self esteem and struggling with his appearance would you all be laughing at a woman breathing in to flatten their stomach for a photo or angling their face to avoid getting a double chin

This. I was really surprised at the first comments on this thread.

If this was a thread about how sad/cringe/pathetic a woman is for trying to hold a pose that she feels is more flattering/trying to hold in her stomach/whatever, I can't help feeling that the comments would be very different.

Loads of people feel insecure about their appearance, and how they look on photos, and height is something that cannot be changed.

In any event, someone apparently feeling insecure about how they look isn't something I'd rush to take the piss about, tbh.

BunnyLake · 12/11/2025 13:29

Buy him a pair of ballet pointes.

333FionaG · 12/11/2025 13:31

I am guilty of angling my head so I don't look as if I have a double chin, and yes, holding in my stomach even though I'm not fat! Leave the poor man alone, he's obviously insecure about his height. Short women can wear skyscraper heels, men get laughed at if they wear shoes with inbuilt lifts or cuban heels. Simon Cowell is good example of a short man who tried to appear taller.

gamerchick · 12/11/2025 13:31

I think everyone has something when it comes to photos.

How many people suck in their guts or arrange their head so they have a jawline, not face the camera head on but to the side.

This is his thing. Let him be.

gamerchick · 12/11/2025 13:34

I widen my eyes because I have droopy eyelids. All it does is make me look like a surprised serial killer every time like.

That's where pulling a face comes in handy instead. Grin

ilovesushi · 12/11/2025 13:41

That is hilarious. Do you all laugh at him? Who is he trying to fool? Can you see the feet in the photos?

Ariel896 · 12/11/2025 13:46

WitchesCauldron · 12/11/2025 12:56

😂😂😂 This will be my new go to insult

MissDoubleU · 12/11/2025 13:48

Just make sure you get his feet in the photo from now on. Make it a game.

I don’t, I’m 5’9” so I am tall. DH is just a smidge taller than me but is comfortable with his height. Contrary to the bloke that dumped me for being ‘too tall’ as he was 5’7”.
