To buy myself a kitchen aid?

i have always been a keen baker and have been asked to do a few cakes for family, I try to bake weekly and want to expand my skills. But I really struggle at the moment as I live with my parents and we only have hand whisks.

I have the money saved and am able to afford it, I’ve had a pretty rubbish year and would like to treat myself to one ahead of Christmas. AIBU to just buy it?

Yes get it - but maybe wait for Black Friday as I got a great deal on ours 5 years ago. Still use it every day.

randomchap · 05/11/2025 09:23

I would say yes, but aren't you better off trying to save to get your own place?

Is there room in the kitchen to store it?

Ferro · 05/11/2025 09:23

It's just a mixer and some would say other, cheaper, uglier mixers are better at mixing. But if you crave one and have the money, get the KitchenAid.

LadyLucksalot · 05/11/2025 09:23

Enjoy it OP. I bought myself one years ago at the end of a big work project. They are amazing - sturdy and beautiful.

I use it every day and it makes me smile. Makes bread-kneading easy peasy and makes the fluffier, softest sponges.

Enjoy! Oh, and YANBU.

citychick · 05/11/2025 09:23

I have one. And an old magimix. I love them both. Kitchen aid is out on counter top and I admire it every day. Magimix is in a cupboard.

I admit I don't use kitchen aid very often, or magimix actually. But I also treated myself to my kitchen aid.
Life is short. Buy it. Enjoy.

It’s £200 off at the moment so I think I won’t get a better deal!

I can’t afford my own place, we’ve all agreed this is the case and my parents are happy.

It’s quite bulky though and I’m sure you can get an upgrade from hand whisk without going to the full kitchenaid…
and if you’re still living at home are your parents happy for such a large item?

A lot of the black Friday deals have started early so go for it! What colour have you chosen?

whiteblossoms · 05/11/2025 09:25

I love my KitchenAid, have had it for 15 years and is used 2-3 times per week. It also looks so pretty sitting on the kitchen bench and I would buy another one tomorrow if anything happened to my current one.

I say buy one if you have the money and are a baker. What colour would you get?

Mum2twoandacockapoo · 05/11/2025 09:25

I just saw someone saying it’s in the Amazon sale for £350 .

Nutmuncher · 05/11/2025 09:25

Get one as long as you’ll use it.

Ours became a dust collector, albeit a shiny smart one but nevertheless the novelty eventually wore off.

PlatinumBrunette · 05/11/2025 09:26

Treat yourself! There is nothing wrong with rewarding yourself with something you desire.
The main problem with a Kitchenaid, though, is - which colour?

My mum has said it’s fine 😁 I’ve gone for pistachio

Lovely colour :)

We have a mini one. I love it.

Grumpynan · 05/11/2025 09:34

I’m thinking of getting one too.

I have a kenwood, it’s 61 years old and has finally stopped working. It might be fixable and I’m tempted to look into getting it done, but I just fancy an nice new machine.

research is pushing me to stick to a Kenwood, I have my eye on the kenwood titanium which is rather over budget but I’m waiting for Black Friday to see if it’s reduced. If not I will look at what is before deciding.

the kitchen aids look good, but I’ve heard they aren’t such good work horses as kenwood, though I would like to hear other peoples opinions.

i think you need to think about what you want to use it for, I’m mainly thinking of bread and pasta with the occasional cake so I need something that can handle the kneading.

I really want to step up my bread game 😂 I hate kneading by hand which was one reason I wanted a stand mixer

The pasta maker attachment for kitchenaid is excellent

OrlandointheWilderness · 05/11/2025 09:44

I had one years ago and one of the greatest regrets of my adult life was selling it. It was honestly worth every penny, they are fab. Very good timing actually as I spent most of yesterday telling DP how much I needed one! 😂

Do it! Dont do what I did and get a cheaper model, I've regretted it ever since.

Tillow4ever · 05/11/2025 10:04

I won one at work years ago now (8-10 years I think) and I love it! It’s lasted me so well - I highly recommend it.

I have both and would kenwood. I have an older kenwood titanium and prefer that to my posh kitchenaid. They're at different properties so I am stuck using the kitchenaid and there's some good stuff but as a baker of many years now, cooking too and hosting a couple times a week, I wish my kenwood was here. I don't want to vocalise it as I know my partner would just get the kenwood but I don't want to seem ungrateful so I'm holding out - also depends what you use it for. KA has better pasta shape maker than KW. I got both in stainless steel so all paddles go in dishwasher but I prefer the titanium ones (but I haven't seen the newest titanium I'd have to proper look into it I prefer the thicker hooks) Overall kenwood is the winner imo but I'll enjoy the kitchenaid a bit longer it looks much nicer on the counter but the kenwood is a workhorse!!! I'm team kenwood overall 😶

Mindyourfunkybusiness · 05/11/2025 10:14

For kneading bread my kenwood managed better, hate to say it. I do sourdoughs mostly and kenwood better but I also do melonpan regularly and kitchenaid handled recipe for 20 easily - sounds like a lot but it really wasn't. You can also use break maker for kneading if there's a lot of dough or it's like, hard to mix in the kitchenaid. Kenwood dough hook is nicer IMHO but not all kenwoods! They've had different dough hooks at different times and there's a specific one that was 10/10!
