To buy myself a kitchen aid?

i have always been a keen baker and have been asked to do a few cakes for family, I try to bake weekly and want to expand my skills. But I really struggle at the moment as I live with my parents and we only have hand whisks.

I have the money saved and am able to afford it, I’ve had a pretty rubbish year and would like to treat myself to one ahead of Christmas. AIBU to just buy it?

DH bought me one for Christmas about 12 years ago. At the time I was ready to murder him but it's honestly one of the best kitchen gadgets I've ever had. It makes such amazing cakes and batter mixes - but I thought I'd treat myself to the glass bowl as mine came with the stainless and it broke very quickly. And messily.

Argos has black and cream kitchen aid for £189

tothelefttotheleft · 05/11/2025 21:49

Sorry £280

I had (admittedly, weird) dreams of saving up to buy one and having a lovely time in John Lewis selecting one to take home. I felt that getting the cheaper one would do the job and scratch the itch.
As it turned out, I reached my savings target in lockdown and couldn’t find a smaller one available for delivery. So I went for the bigger model. My only wish is that I’d ordered the white mixing bowl but I can’t justify that now.
It brings me joy.

PineappleCoconut · 05/11/2025 22:21

Oh get one
you won’t regret it
Harts of Stur usually has some great offers, we got ours with free attachments and a lovely chopping board set to.
ice cream maker is good
as is the mincer
and the grater
I don’t do homemade pasta, so haven’t got that one yet

The second hand kenwoods last forever and are great for bread. The older ones are the best. Not stylish but great to use.

IcingOnTheTop · 06/11/2025 06:46

It’s arriving today and I’m so excited! The main thing I’m excited for is to make bread etc., I love the end results (eating carbs) but hate the kneading

Enjoy your kitchenaid and hopefully it'll handle the loaves you plan to bake! (My kitchenaid struggled with some recipes but not others, kenwood handles all without issue)

soupyspoon · 06/11/2025 07:48

How could you possibly think this was unreasonable!!

You didnt even need to give any OP just the thread title will do

We need a picture 😬

I have a black one and use it a lot. It's a thing of beauty.

This guy on insta is worth a follow too. @mr._mixer

He has lots of hints and tips on maintenance if ever you need it. Put kitchen aid geekdom 😂

I've seen quite a few comparisons between Kitchen Aid and Ankarsrum. The Ankarsrum one is more expensive but is a superior machine. Sorry

OMG, what the hell have you done to me.

Biggles27 · 06/11/2025 08:39

I treated myself to a Kenwood Chef in 2020. I have, 5 years on, absolutely NO regrets

Go for it

BadgernTheGarden · 06/11/2025 08:42

I just use a hand held electric mixer, it has dough hooks as well. Works well and much easier to store.

Grumpynan · 05/11/2025 09:34

I’m thinking of getting one too.

I have a kenwood, it’s 61 years old and has finally stopped working. It might be fixable and I’m tempted to look into getting it done, but I just fancy an nice new machine.

research is pushing me to stick to a Kenwood, I have my eye on the kenwood titanium which is rather over budget but I’m waiting for Black Friday to see if it’s reduced. If not I will look at what is before deciding.

the kitchen aids look good, but I’ve heard they aren’t such good work horses as kenwood, though I would like to hear other peoples opinions.

i think you need to think about what you want to use it for, I’m mainly thinking of bread and pasta with the occasional cake so I need something that can handle the kneading.

I’d def look into getting it fixed, that’s a family member xx

Viviennemary · 06/11/2025 08:44

Absolutely go for it. They look amazing. I'd love one but I never bake so can't justify it. You can.

As I’ve said down the thread I burnt the motor out on a ur handheld after about a month 😅 they can’t handle buttercream icing!

Do it! I covet one but I have no room. If I win the lottery the first thing I’m doing is buying one - then building a bigger kitchen to house it 😂

Dzer · 06/11/2025 08:47

I did lots of research and chose a Kenwood mix instead. No regrets at all.

Lasecretaire · 06/11/2025 08:48

Just a curve ball! Look at Kenwood as well - they have one with a inbuilt scale and also 7L bowls too. But they arnt as pretty! I managed to get 200 quid off in prime day so I would definitely wait until black Friday.
Even my 40 year old Kenwood was my favourite kitchen thing so I would definitely go for it. It will last you years and be something just for you.

Thanks for sharing, I wasn't aware of this brand, they look excellent.

amilliondreamsofsleep · 06/11/2025 10:25

I have a kmix I bought with a small bonus for a major project I did about 10 years ago. It still gives me joy and i use it 2-3 times a week. Do it!

steff13 · 06/11/2025 13:17

I bought mine 25 years ago. I use it multiple times a week. It would have been worth it at twice the price.

NowWhatUsernameShallIHave · 06/11/2025 18:08

I waited until it was on TSV on QVC.
normally they have a decent discount and additional accessories- I got a glass mixing bowl as well as the metal one.
Plus you can return it even if it’s been used

My advice would be to buy an older one - they are made better and there is a guy on you tube that can show you how to do a refurb should you need it

Taniot · 06/11/2025 18:34

Enjoy the bread making OP!

If you don’t have it yet, a KA-TH beater blade is a game changer. The flexible sides mean no more stopping every so often to scrape down the sides of the bowl!

Example photo attached, you can get it on Amazon, eBay (~£12.95) or elsewhere
