Repulsive perfumes

I like natural fragrances, like the scent of lavender, some essential oils etc. But for some reason artificial scents like in washing powder and perfumes make me want to gag. They really unsettle me. What's that all about?

YABU - I smell gorgeous when I put three cups of fabric softener in the machine, and adorn myself with a bath of duty-free spoils.

YANBU - People overdo fragrances, they are tacky and make me want to gag too.

I know a lot of people are sensitive to fragrance, but I'm not, and I love it, so I've never smelt one that's repulsed me or made me gag. I love fragrance. I like the clean smell of washing powder.

There are many other types of smells that repulse me. I'd rather smell fragrance any day than those!

opencecilgee · 11/10/2025 20:12

I uswd to work with someone who wore white linen

grim, pungent, over powering

GarlicPound · 11/10/2025 21:30

Angel smells like when you take fresh flowers, throw them in the bin where they mix together with a bin juice and then put freshly dug up black soil on the top and mix it all together.

No idea what the stuff smells like, but you've painted a very evocative picture 😂

AutumnLover1989 · 11/10/2025 21:40

Clarins elexir smells horrible.

Icreatedausernameyippee · 11/10/2025 21:49

There's something in imitation perfume that smells sickly and makes me gag.
Same for fabric softener.

I do wear perfume every day though. Miss Dior and Narcisso Rodriguez for her.
I love catching a whiff of nice perfume in public.

Bigpinksweater · 11/10/2025 21:53

Scent boosters always make me think of dogs and cigarettes because the only people I know who use them are trying to cover up the smell of dogs and cigarettes

I must be the only one here that loves Aromatics Elixir....... Sorry!.
Hate those Oud stalls in shopping malls I think the smell clings to you as you pass.
Most hated has got to be Youth Dew.

Don't be sorry I love it too along with White linen. I also love Miss Dior Originale and L'Occitane Cherry Blossom. The only perfume I've ever had a visceral reaction to was Elizabeth Arden Sunflowers. I was at a concert and pregnant and the woman behind me was drenched in it. I couldn't stop gagging for the entire performance.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 11/10/2025 22:09

Anything Thierry Mugler - way too strong

JMSA · 11/10/2025 22:14

There’s a green tea perfume (Elizabeth Arden?) that makes me ill, because of its association with my morning sickness.
My mother is the same with Shield soap, even after all these years!

allyjay · 11/10/2025 22:19

I'm still sad about the discontinuation of Wrappings by Clinique and Mystere by Rochas. Would love an alternative to these

UninitendedShark · 11/10/2025 20:01

Gucci Rush.. The asphyxiating scent of patchouli and hot PVC.

I love all the Gucci Floras and Bloom.

IndieRocknRoll · 11/10/2025 22:51

Oh I love Angel! I’ve had loads of different perfumes over the years but I keep coming back to it. I use the eau de toilette rather than the parfum as it’s lighter. I mist a little and then walk under it rather than dousing myself in it. I’ve had more compliments from wearing it than any other perfume (though I’m sure equally as many people are hating it after this thread!)

Sasha07 · 11/10/2025 23:09

On the Christmas Bargains thread lasted year, it was often mentioned when Arianna Grande perfume was reduced.
Seemed popular so I found the particular one, thinking to buy it for my niece... I must be the only one who can't stand it. Absolutely horrid stuff 🤢

MrsPositivity1 · 10/10/2025 18:18

The smell of Poison Perfume used to make me gag

Same

CoffeeLipstickKeys · 11/10/2025 23:15

Mumsnet posters always claim to be sensitive to perfume with hyperosmia
I mean one poster claimed she can smell scented sanitary products
People who gag at a whiff of Lenor, need a seat if someone is wearing perfume

GarlicPound · 11/10/2025 23:48

Pregnant women often become hypersensitive to smells, @CoffeeLipstickKeys, and I have a sneaking suspicion that half of Mumsnet never noticed when it had worn off, so they still think they're super-smellers.

Even when not pregnant, women have more olfactory cells and neurons than men: most women would appear extra-sensitive in comparison to most men.

Smoking, age and antidepressants have knocked a few edges off my sensitivity now, but no perfume has ever made me gag! You'd need some especially putrid biological pongs for that ...

LancashireButterPie · 12/10/2025 00:02

Anaïs Anaïs has got to be the worst. It smells like drain cleaner to me. Makes me feel sick and my chest starts to wheeze.
Poison and Youth Dew follow.

I wear Guerlain Clementine and Basil, soft, light, summery.

CoffeeLipstickKeys · 12/10/2025 00:05

Perfume is subjective, so olfactory heaven to one person is putrid wet dog to another
Yes I do think mumsnet posters are prone to hyperbole that a merest whiff of perfume has them wrenching. They can smell febreeze from half a block etc

FightingFish · 12/10/2025 00:11

I think woman are definitely more sensitive to smells. I also become hypersensitive to smells when I have my period, I imagine other women have this too?

Toofficeornot · 12/10/2025 00:39

I like nice smelling perfume but not overdone.
Although the jean paul gaultier perfume the original one in the human shaped bottle, makes me want to puke. I think it smells of stale sweaty balls.

CoffeeLipstickKeys · 12/10/2025 02:21

According to this thread posters are gagging, wheezing, retching, nauseous in proximity to regular high street perfume or fabric softener . How do they manage work, commuting or proximity to others if so very sensitive?

EmeraldShamrock000 · 12/10/2025 02:28

Perfume is a lot milder nowadays, even the ones that last all day.
As a child, perfume was so strong, my DM used opium.
I don't like anything overdosed in perfume or fabric conditioner, but I do like a lighter scent.
Each to their own.

dumberthanaboxofrocks · 10/10/2025 19:53

Angel. Smells of unhappiness.

It smells like burnt candy floss to me. It hurts my nostrils

EconomyClassRockstar · 12/10/2025 03:00

I wear Tom Ford Cafe Rose every single day and I get complimented on my smell all the time. I just think I smell clean and not wearing perfumes from the early 90s!

DrowningInSyrup · 12/10/2025 03:22

AbbeyGrange · 10/10/2025 19:50

Sorry if anyone wears these, I just don't like them!
Poison
Youth Dew
Tresor
Paris
Rive Gauche
Ma Griffe
Beautiful

Oh my God do they still make Tresor & Paris?
