Repulsive perfumes

I like natural fragrances, like the scent of lavender, some essential oils etc. But for some reason artificial scents like in washing powder and perfumes make me want to gag. They really unsettle me. What's that all about?

YABU - I smell gorgeous when I put three cups of fabric softener in the machine, and adorn myself with a bath of duty-free spoils.

YANBU - People overdo fragrances, they are tacky and make me want to gag too.

Rive Gauche. Revolting and I was frequently forced to smell it as a colleague used to spray it all over her clothes a few times a day like a cheap body spray. When I saw that black and blue bottle I'd cringe. She also waxed lyrical about her M&S purchases like it was bloody Harrods.

HRTQueen · 10/10/2025 20:12

Issey Miyake 🤢 but I like the men’s fragrance

Angel and Poison give me a headache and Anas Anais is horrible. I used to get it for my Nanny every Christmas but she never wore it she eventually admitted she didn’t like it and was wearing 4711 which I love 🥰 I wondered why it smelt different on her

no farts don’t give me a headache but strong perfumes can

The smell of Poison Perfume used to make me gag

Oh that’s a vile perfume. And Britney Spears fantasy.

Sounds like my Aunty Barbara 😆 who I thought was very glamorous when I was young

it was Marks though not M&S

Angel. Smells of unhappiness.

That's the only perfume I've ever had to wash off after testing. I remember standing in a restaurant toilet years ago scrubbing it off. Someone in the building I worked in used to wear it and it made me gag if I smelt it.

daddysgirlnot · 10/10/2025 20:17

The 80’s was grim… in my classroom you would have smelled the following:
poison
rive gauche
lulu
anais anais
revlon charlie
giorgio Beverley hills.
the boys:
jazz
aramis
davidoff
all vomit inducing.
i really don’t like Chanel no5

DashboardConfession · 10/10/2025 20:19

I just can't abide jasmine. It's in so many scents, in fabric softener and perfumes, and it just smells of wee.

CalzoneOnLegs · 10/10/2025 20:20

Does anyone remember …
clinique ‘aromatics elixir’
Estée Lauder ‘youth dew’

both crimes against humanity

Oh god that Aromatics elixir was hideous!
I hated Dewberry too.
Anything with a supposed fresh “green” grassy scent or “ocean-y” smells nothing like. Anything watery and insipid yet allergy provoking by Calvin Klein.

comeondover · 10/10/2025 20:26

I'm in a hotel tonight. Even the corridor smelled very strongly of some kind of pseudo apple-scented cleaning product. I was practically asphyxiated when I walked in the room, it was so overpowering. I left the door and window open for 6 hours to air, and when I came back I could still smell it but at least it's tolerable now

suburburban · 10/10/2025 20:29

Yes

my dgm bought this for me as a teenager and I think I had to give it to my dm

elixir and the Beverly Hills giorgio

plus an 80s YSL exotic one opium?

IggyAce · 10/10/2025 20:32

Angel smells awful on me, gave me a headache. Sauvage, bloody hate it and why do men think it’s a good idea to dowse themselves in it.

Ketzele · 10/10/2025 20:33

Angel has to be the worst.

BBCK · 10/10/2025 20:34

The 80s brown box one is Opium. I love it but most people don’t

Lavender14 · 10/10/2025 20:35

I like the smell of most fabric softeners especially the gentle one I washed all ds baby clothes in probably for the nostalgia but I like the fact it smells (to me) 'clean' and fresh.

I tend to also wear the likes of lavender natural deodorants and I struggle with perfume as a lot would trigger headaches for me but I like most floral scents as long as they aren't over powering like rose.

NormasArse · 10/10/2025 20:36

GiddyDog · 10/10/2025 18:26

L'air du temps 🤮 I had a colleague who would douse herself in it and we worked in very close quarters so couldn't get away from the smell, it made me nauseous. That was years ago and I never actually knew what it was till I encountered someone wearing it recently and asked what scent she had on (did not disclose that I was asking because I hate it!).
Don't really mind smelling washing powder etc or most other perfumes.

I used to wear that as a teenager 😬

Cardomomle · 10/10/2025 20:36

I used to love Giorgio Beverley Hills when I was younger!
Also Laura Ashley did lovely perfumes.
I always thought Poison was too strong, they did a lighter cologne version which was better.

nildesparandum · 10/10/2025 20:37

I used to love perfume tilL I developed COPD.Now every perfume, cheap to very expensive goes straight to my lungs and they close up and leave me fighting for breath and reaching for my inhaler like a mad woman.
I never use fabric softener for same reason and also after a washing machine repair man told me about the damage done to washers by using fabric softeners.

Ledwood85 · 10/10/2025 20:38

Came for the Angel hate, leaving satisfied.

Surviving the morning cloud of Lynx Africa, for anyone with teenage boys.

Came here to say Lynx Africa makes me gag! (Don’t have teenage boys tho)
Someone mentioned Suavage, don’t particularly like that one either.

Generally tho I love perfumes and fabric conditioner smells, tho not if so much is used that it’s overpowering.

Overtheatlantic · 10/10/2025 20:46

I was mentioning my husband’s aunts perfume and before I even finished my sentence my FIL said derisively, “That will be the Youth Dew.”

Cardomomle · 10/10/2025 20:49

You have not fully experienced Lynx Africa until you have taught a yr9 group in a hot classroom after they've done PE and the boys have liberally doused themselves in it.
Oh and the girls have similarly sprayed Ariana Grande Sweet Like Candy....
