Repulsive perfumes

I like natural fragrances, like the scent of lavender, some essential oils etc. But for some reason artificial scents like in washing powder and perfumes make me want to gag. They really unsettle me. What's that all about?

YABU - I smell gorgeous when I put three cups of fabric softener in the machine, and adorn myself with a bath of duty-free spoils.

YANBU - People overdo fragrances, they are tacky and make me want to gag too.

Angel and alien, bloody alien in particular. I think it makes everyone who wears it smell absolutely filthy, that BO/greasy hair masked with cheap body spray smell in a bottle.

Ghost is another of those scents.

I really disliked CK1 (I think that’s what it was called) but mostly because I really disliked someone who used it.

I wore that as a student. 25 years ago. In secondary I house shared with a guy who wore it and was fascinated by how different it smelt on him.

ShortColdandGrey · 10/10/2025 22:40

Chanel No5 smells like absolute shit when it comes in contact with my skin 🤣 My husband didn’t believe me. So we went to Debenhams and I put a small amount on my wrist. He spent the next half hour trying not to gag until I got home and washed it off. I am also glad CK1 is no longer popular. My nose would burn as soon as I smelt it and then I wouldn’t be able to stop sneezing.

UnNiddeRides · 10/10/2025 22:41

I also have smells I like that are probably considered stinky (Aramis) but it was what one of my first boyfriends wore & I still love it. Same goes for Mandate!

One of my exs always smelled really clean, but manly at the same time. I found out that he wore CK1. He turned out to be a twat in many ways, but at least he smelt nice.

I'm glad no one has mentioned Narciso Rodriguez as it's my favourite. I actually prefer wearing For Him. A perfumer once told me that there's sometimes no difference between a scent that's aimed at men and one that's aimed at women. It's really down to marketing. So I ignore the label and wear whatever seems to work well on me.

In the 80's I was with my Mum in Boots, they sprayed her with Poison and she hated it, it stained her coat and she could not get rid of the smell. I loved it, bought it and wore it, she would always say " Eugh you are wearing that horrible perfume". I still love Poison, but sadly it no longer smells or lasts as it did, but i still giggle at the memory of my Mum's reaction.

ThePoliteLion · 10/10/2025 22:52

I wore and loved Ysatis by Givenchy in the 80’s.
Aromatics Elixir is the pits. Chanel No 5 seems so dated.
these days my house stinks of Sol de Janeiro (tween DDs). Just like fly spray.

Baccarat Rogue and it's 100 dupes.

I can smell if someone is wearing it in a shop and we are not even in the same aisle.

Awful stuff.

Same for me. I think it smells dirty and can leave me with a headache.

FartyAnimal · 10/10/2025 22:56

Angel, alien, chanel no 5, soleiro vanilla one (bleugh).

Back in the eighties I liked the Paloma Picasso one in a black oval bottle, and one in a blue round bottle, that I think (on googling) was called boucheron jaipur saphir?

sweeneytoddsrazor · 10/10/2025 22:59

Poison is my all time favourite perfume
Never liked White musk which used to be very popular. We recently had some scented candles which smelled like bonfires- vile.
If I am burning incense sticks I tend to go for Patchouli or Frankincense.

ChaosDreamV2 · 10/10/2025 22:59

@AbbeyGrangetotally agree - it’s so heavy and gives me the heave when I smell it on someone

Ghostellas · 10/10/2025 23:00

Clinique Happy was gifted to me and I felt anything but….had to throw it away as it makes me feel sick.

I went off a lot of male fragrances while pregnant but if anyone wears Aventus Creed I always find it smells amazing!

tsmainsqueeze · 10/10/2025 19:44

Estee Lauder Youth Dew.

My mum works on a perfume counter and can confirm this with gusto !

CrispsPlease · 10/10/2025 23:04

My mum also palmed off a disgusting smelling perfume on me: JPG 'scandal' , 'heavy' strong and unpleasant 🤢

UnNiddeRides · 10/10/2025 23:05

Ah! Body Shop White Musk. I had the whole range. Even used to spray some on a cotton wool ball & shove it down the fins of the radiators!

LamonicBibber1 · 10/10/2025 23:06

Anäis perfume? I think it was?don't know if they still make it but I know that if I smelled it all these years later, I'd be transported back to some very traumatic times of my youth courtesy of someone who wore it.

Also Joop, it was really popular on men in early 2000s and you'll still occasionally smell far too much of it wafting off a passing man wearing a blazer with mid blue bootcut jeans and brown pointy shoes 😂

CrispsPlease · 10/10/2025 23:09

Nettleskeins · 10/10/2025 20:59

The smell of scented nappy sacks and scented sanitary pads is horrendous.

I totally get this. I think it's because you smell the contents interlaced with the 'perfume' and your mind then naturally associates the smell with shit or old dried up period blood.

I always remember a rogue of a casual ex taking me in his banged up crappy motor when I was about 17 and some girl (probably someone he was shagging) vommed in the back seat and he'd sprayed it with "oust". And still to this day I smell oust and want to gag as all I can smell is cheesy/alcohol vomit 🤮

My mum used to wear Anaïs Anaïs back in the day. I can still smell it now. Flowers and sugar with a tiny drop of gin ! Very old fash smell.

In fairness joop is actually a nice masculine scent. But unfortunately it attracted the chavs, and everyone who wears it splashes it on it Pools. Two distanced sprays should be enough!

The smell of Poison Perfume used to make me gag

I was just going to say the same!! How did this ever make it to market??

Lotusflow · 10/10/2025 23:19

Alien is objectively a masterpiece, but I don’t wear it personally. There’s a whole world of perfumery — niche, natural and extremely high quality ingredients. I cannot abide the generic washing powder smell though. Revolting.

Lavenderandbrown · 10/10/2025 23:20

I have a very specific demographic of patients who I can smell even before I walk in the exam room….al wearing Estée Lauder youth dew.

another very very old scent is Tabu. My mum hated it and would always say…oh no someone is wearing Tabu. We still joke about stinky perfume wearing women and my dsis will say…Tabu.

BauhausOfEliott · 10/10/2025 23:25

Being utterly disgusted by any scent other than fresh air is one of things that I constantly see people going on about on Mumsnet - where everyone seems to feel sick and get a migraine or an asthma attack if they catch so much as whiff of someone’s soap - and yet never hear anyone mention in real life.

I don’t do the laundry in our house and I’ve no idea if DP uses a scented fabric softener; I haven’t noticed or asked him. I wear perfume every day though.

I’ve never in my life been bothered by someone else’s perfume. There are certainly plenty I’d never wear myself in a billion years but I still don’t really find them offensive if someone sits next to me wearing them.

What does bother me is someone near me chewing mint chewing gum or eating things like Polos or breath mints. They smell utterly rank to me for some reason. Obviously that’s my problem rather than theirs though! I wouldn’t complain about it.

Crispynoodle · 10/10/2025 23:27

There used to be an aftershave for men called Noir not the Drakkar one. I blooming loved it and wore it myself I would give anything to smell that again. In my classroom one of the girls recently sprayed a Victoria secret body fragrance that too was lovely. Poison or the tree car fresheners are instant migraine inducers

bugalugs45 · 10/10/2025 18:27

Same ! My auntie wore it in the 80s/90s 🤢

Me too!
I couldn't understand how anybody could like it and it was everywhere in the late '80's
It smelled acidic to me. Like paint stripper.
I used to love my Charlie Red though 😁
