Repulsive perfumes

I like natural fragrances, like the scent of lavender, some essential oils etc. But for some reason artificial scents like in washing powder and perfumes make me want to gag. They really unsettle me. What's that all about?

YABU - I smell gorgeous when I put three cups of fabric softener in the machine, and adorn myself with a bath of duty-free spoils.

YANBU - People overdo fragrances, they are tacky and make me want to gag too.

I'm in a hotel tonight. Even the corridor smelled very strongly of some kind of pseudo apple-scented cleaning product. I was practically asphyxiated when I walked in the room, it was so overpowering. I left the door and window open for 6 hours to air, and when I came back I could still smell it but at least it's tolerable now

Re hotel scents. Has anyone ever stayed in a Westin hotel. They used to have their own scent in the bathroom toiletries and pumped through the aircon and you could actually taste it it was so strong. Haven’t stayed in a westin in years would be interested to know if it still smells sure the fragrance was ‘white tea’ and something else?

YouMightLikeCats · 10/10/2025 20:54

I hated Ghost and CK Be when I was younger, but I know they were very popular.

crazeekat · 10/10/2025 20:55

I don’t mind too much the smells but what pisses me off is at work. Coffee room. Eating lunch, someone finishes their food gets up to go, opens their bag and sprays themselves with their perfume or body spray head to toe and it’s in my mouth trying to eat. It really gets my back up.

Nettleskeins · 10/10/2025 20:56

I love Clinique aromatics elixir and White Linen; oh dear...

But I hate the smell of pomegranate noir Jo Malone and Poison.

Also Rive Gauche and Chanel always smell slightly off to me. But I can see they are meant to smell nice ...it's just a wrong note somewhere perhaps ?

Rive Gauche

Because we like it?

I love perfume, absolutely love it. I wear different scents each day depending on my mood and the weather. I lean towards niche brands and have different perfumes for different times of the year. I have just brought out my autumn/winter bottles and I'm genuinely excited to wear them all again after six months of different smells.

Wearing perfume brings me huge joy. And when I feel down or ugly or just not myself, a spray of something I love really gives me a boost. Call me shallow, but that's what I like. I even have bedtime scents that relax me and make me feel warm and safe. Make of that what you will.

And as someone who works with the beauty industry, not all of it is as toxic as you believe.

There's a middle ground between overusing washing powders, over-spraying a very strong perfume etc and being a sweet child of nature smelling of just skin and maybe a subtle flower. It isn't one or the other. The only time I have been overwhelmed by smell is when a yoga teacher popped a lavender bag on my eyes during Savasana. I'm not overly keen on lavender at the best of times but this was so doused in lavender oil it made me exclaim a very non-yogic "fuck me that's hideous."

Have you come across Cursed perfumes. Pretty as Poison and Vampiren Veil are amazing!!
The Mens scents are really nice too particularly From Hell.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 10/10/2025 20:59

nildesparandum
I never use fabric softener for same reason and also after a washing machine repair man told me about the damage done to washers by using fabric softeners.

White vinegar instead softens fabrics and, surprisingly, doesn't leave the towels and clothes smelling of vinegar. In fact it softens towels better than fabric softener does!

The morning primary school run used to be hell for me because every single mum who was dropping off the kids and going on to work would have put on her favourite scent ready for the day, and most of them really don't go well with all the others. It felt like chemical warfare all round me. I'm sure the scents were each of them ok (in moderation: my sainted ma used to say the idea of scent is to allure men at close quarters, not stun them at fifty paces) but as a collective they were awful.

Nettleskeins · 10/10/2025 20:59

The smell of scented nappy sacks and scented sanitary pads is horrendous.

I really want to have a collection of beautiful perfumes! But I have only smelt about 3 I actually like, and if I don't like something I tend to really loathe it, so it's hard for me to ever find ones I love when I can't stand 99% of them!

MrFluffyDogIsMyBestFriend · 10/10/2025 21:09

I hate air fresheners, fabric conditioners, scented candles etc and think it's a very bad idea to use them as they're so toxic. I also can't understand why people use antiperspirant sprays...why would you want to breathe in aluminium? I use Ecover washing liquid and it just has a very slight fresh smell.

However, I do like perfume, particularly Shalimar and Hypnose. I only do two or three sprays though, mostly because I don't want to upset my dog :)

Puffalicious · 10/10/2025 21:27

I do love a perfume. I'm quite particular about mine.

A friend of mine used to wear Angel & it smelled utterly delicious on her. My sister bought me a bottle one Christmas & it smelled absolutely awful on me, like truly awful. It's mad.

suburburban · 10/10/2025 21:28

I did like White Linen. It was light and airy and Anais Anais

also wore Jonty

I think they were of their time

also had Je Reviens but wouldn’t wear it now

I used to wear White Linen a lot and I loved Anais Anais! I read that it was Princess Diana's favourite perfume!
My sister still wears it.

Blingismything · 10/10/2025 21:37

The smell of nappy sacks reminds me vividly of the first night in hospital with my daughter, changing her first nappy, I was delirious with happiness despite being in agony from the birth and breast feeding. Had never experienced them before.

CoffeeCantata · 10/10/2025 21:37

tsmainsqueeze · 10/10/2025 19:44

Estee Lauder Youth Dew.

I totally agree. It’s like fly spray. An elderly relative once gave me some, and anything less dewy or youthful would be hard to imagine.

Loved White Linen.

YetiRosetti · 10/10/2025 21:43

I agree Poison is an awful scent, but I love Pure Poison, Hypnotic Poison and Midnight Poison!

I also love Alien, which has had some hate but I can see why it would be marmite.

i dislike Flower by Kenzo

FightingFish · 10/10/2025 21:45

Totally agree with the office spraying. I have a colleague that sprays pound shop perfumes over herself after lunch like it’s the most normal thing in the world.

The scent from my youth that is most gag worthy is the truly disgusting ‘sunflowers’, haven’t smelt it on anyone for a few years now thankfully!

ginislife · 10/10/2025 21:47

Keno Jungle. Revolting

XWKD · 10/10/2025 19:43

I detest the fabric softeners smells I've come across. I wish I could confiscate them from my neighbours. 🤣

Edited

I feel your pain and share it. I could smell next door's fabric softener from the washing on their line in their back garden from my front garden. It is so so strong, it wafts all over my house if my windows are open.

UnNiddeRides · 10/10/2025 21:56

I really disliked CK1 (I think that’s what it was called) but mostly because I really disliked someone who used it.

SNAP 🤣 she also used White Linen. I hated her so much that any perfume she used went on my shit list.

Does anyone remember …
clinique ‘aromatics elixir’
Estée Lauder ‘youth dew’

both crimes against humanity

The skank who was shagging my ex wore aromatics. I used to wear it in the early 90s but gave it all away to someone who lived overseas. I was pregnant at the time too, so it fuelled my morning sickness.
Poison, giorgio armani, dune, all the big 80s scents(except obsession, still love it. But would never wear it again)

AbbeyGrange · 10/10/2025 22:23

Omg Aromatics Elixir, headache in a bottle
