Men violently preventing women from congregating, communicating and networking, is what the Taliban do. Why is it happening in the UK?

The FiLiA Women's Liberation Conference was targeted overnight, the attackers even live tweeted the violence.

Local politicians are so far silent.

This is literally terrorism, using fear and violence to shut down legitimate peaceful discussions.

Live: Venue vandalised and protesters demonstrate at feminist conference

The Brighton Centre has been vandalised as a feminist conference begins there today.

I didn't say that, did I? I said people - including women - have historically smashed things when they're angry.

Not sure why such a basic fact is so controversial.

You MUST be being deliberately obtuse at this point.

dudsville · 10/10/2025 17:26

It's such a powerful behavioural display. I'm easily shaken. I've not been around much violence. I'd really enjoy a feminist conference but violent acts like these frighten me and keep me away. It is a powerful form of control.

Exactly. The purpose was absolutely intimidation. Which some people seem to be conveniently ignoring.

@SingleSexSpacesInSchools the answer to the question posed in your title is "because...far left". Similarities with the Taliban are very clear.

Angry people break stuff when they feel they’re not being listened to. Especially when the people who aren’t listening pop up in their back yard”

a feminist conference, you mean.

Angry men smash things. Yep I can see why women don’t want them involved.

And that bolded quote is justifying it.

Sorry i dont agree with you on this. Terrorism is about causing fear and (hopefully) harm in the name of a cause. Protest is objecting to something that you disagree with. Protest does not have to be violent, particularly in a democracy. This action last night against the venue was deliberate, illegal and clearly designed to be intimidating. If not then why were masks necessary? It fits a domestic terrorism brief perfectly.

While I do not agree with criminal damage as a method of protest in most circumstances, it would obviously have a severe chilling effect on freedom of if we started treating all protesters who broke the law as terrorists. Extinction Rebellion smashed a lot of windows (including while people were in the buildings) and spilled a lot of paint over buildings too. Banksy spray painted the Royal Courts of Justice a couple of weeks ago. Protesters attacked the police at the "raise the flag" Tommy Robinson protest recently. I mean there are lots of examples. They are illegal acts, done in the name of ideology, but they are not terrorist acts. Criminality + a view you disagree with does not = terrorism.

ContentedAlpaca · 10/10/2025 17:43

To be clear - Angry people break stuff when they're not being listened to. The people this particular bunch are angry about popped up in their back yard, so they went and broke their stuff. It's not that deep

I've just had a look at the speaker list. The first 3 I've clicked on was a survivor of human trafficking, someone campaigning against sex dolls and female robots that position women as sexual objects and someone who suffered extreme injuries when the Taliban tried to kill her for trying to educate girls.

It makes no sense to be angry at these women or to try to scare them, or prevent them from speaking.

Appalonia · 10/10/2025 17:44

I've been to The Filia conference in Portsmouth, Cardiff and Glasgow. Every single time there were protests outside the venue. This has escalated though, causing actual physical damage to a building. I don't think it is an overreach to call them domestic terrorists, as their aim is to terrorise women who are simply meeting to talk about their rights, as women.

Since there is video footage and this group have claimed responsibility, I really hope they get the book thrown at them!

Of course.

Their name is literally promising violence against people who have challenged them.

If they had been blown up, they'd probably have asked for it.

Yes. Those Terfs have blood on their hands and must pay for it. ALL.

Smashed windows and spray paint is hardly "hold the front page" stuff and your reference to the Taliban and "violently preventing women from congregating, communicating and networking" is complete hyperbole.

Still, I am sure they are glad of the publicity you have given them OP.

I think we all want them to have plenty of publicity so I’m not sure what your point is.

Absolutely we do. The more the world sees their violent, unreasonable nature, the better. Already Wes Streeting has called them out.

Terrifying. Why are these men like this?

Do they think wearing a dress somehow means this isn't a violent crime that proves they are just men who hate women?

They've come back like a bad smell recently and I'd love to know why. Really was a nice break for a while. I think the public has definitely seen through them though, largely because it's so bloody obvious they don't even like women.

When was there a break? I was ill for a chunk of 2023 so I might well have missed it.

They are left wing when the left pander to them and the right wants to protect women and girls (when it comes to this subject - not others).

The right’s motivations may not be championing women and girls but they aren’t the ones calling for men in women’s space. We need to accept this is a left wing problem.

Not all people on the left think this way. It's not as clear cut as you assume.

If a man smashes an inanimate object near to a woman she is advised to leave. Its a sign of danger and him demonstrating “you’re next”. How on earth is this any different to that? The minimising is disgusting. We see you. Traliban indeed.
