To not understand red onion

NameChangeAgainAgainAgainAgain · 08/10/2025 16:10

People eat it RAW?? Then you stink of it and taste it all day in your mouth and it repeats on you for hours.

I mean, why??? Is it WORTH IT? Would you eat a white onion raw? If not, why not? Oh yeah, because that would be INSANE

Sure

ilovesooty · 08/10/2025 16:12

Red onion isn't as strong as white onion.

TheGrimSmile · 08/10/2025 16:13

I eat red and white onions raw. I don't get your post.

NuffSaidSam · 08/10/2025 16:13

People eat white onion raw as well.

SprayWhiteDung · 08/10/2025 16:13

But it's delicious - especially if left to 'mature' in vinegar for several hours before eating it.

Beautiful when mixed in with creamy mash.

Rottenbanana250 · 08/10/2025 16:14

Red onion tastes different to white onion...so there's that. It IS a strong flavour that hangs around but the same could be said for garlic etc, that's why the option to brush your teeth/ have some gum remains. Personally have no problem with it repeating on me. It's almost as though people have different tastes..

Ablondiebutagoody · 08/10/2025 16:14

I eat both raw. Slices/rings. Not just chew it down like an apple. Had a blt for lunch today with onion in it to add a bit of oomph.

poetryandwine · 08/10/2025 16:15

A slice of red onion is delicious on a burger

FurForksSake · 08/10/2025 16:15

I love a cheese and onion sandwich or a cheese and onion roastie.

NoSoapJustUseShowerGel · 08/10/2025 16:15

Totally agree! Just don’t get when I see huge chunks in salads, burgers etc 🤢

Tagyoureit · 08/10/2025 16:15

I love raw onion, red and white!

When I go to a salad buffet its onion, sweetcorn, pineapple piled high and 1000 island dressing!! Yummy!!

You can soak onions in water for about 20 minutes to take away the tang but I rarely do this.

MidlandsGal1 · 08/10/2025 16:17

I eat both raw, I prefer to use red onion in salads but it goes well in some cooked dishes as well.

It doesn’t repeat on me for hours and I don’t smell of it or taste it all day.

Just because you don’t like something doesn’t make people who do insane.

EchoedSilence · 08/10/2025 16:19

I always put raw onion in salads red or white. And I love a cheese and onion sandwich. I just use which ever colour onion I have in.

spiderlight · 08/10/2025 16:20

It's absolutely VILE, raw or cooked. I call it the Devil's Toenail Clippings. It's the one vegetable I absolutely will not touch, and it limits me so much as a vegetarian because it seems to be on/in so many veggie options when I'm trying to eat out at the moment. DH loves it, and many times I've spent ages picking out bits of surprise red onion from my food for him, but then he stinks of it for days.

Coldiron · 08/10/2025 16:23

It’s fine cooked but never raw. Its taste has the half life of uranium

EdgyCrab · 08/10/2025 16:24

Just to say how much your post title made me chuckle! Bloody love red onions, eat them like apples! Joking. But I do like the occasional slice/some diced in a salad, as I sometimes do brown onions too. Yeah your breath honks but who cares it's delicious! Different strokes for different folks, am squarely team raw onion.

Jollyjoy · 08/10/2025 16:27

Do you know, my auntie Joyce says onions make her angry and it’s a family joke, ‘oh no, Joyce has been eating onions again’. I think you have the same allergy!

UnaOfStormhold · 08/10/2025 16:29

I understand people do like raw onion but can't stand the stuff myself (red, white or spring)! When cooked it transforms into a lovely base for all sorts of dishes and is a staple of my cooking, but when raw it has a penetrating taste that ruins everything it touches. I wouldn't say people not liking it are insane, but I wish people wouldn't automatically add something so divisive to a mixed salad.

itsgettingweird · 08/10/2025 16:29

Yes I eat it raw.

I was expecting you to saw you don’t understand why it’s called red onion as it’s actually purple 🤣

thebear1 · 08/10/2025 16:30

Hate it raw, often have to remove it from salads when eating out.

GasPanic · 08/10/2025 16:31

Chop it up and sprinkle it on stuff. Like with cheese on chilli.

Very nice.

Arlanymor · 08/10/2025 16:32

I quite like red onion in a salad and my dad loves white onion and cheese in a sandwich. Neither of us smell like the inside of a shoe or walk around all day burping out little oniony mouth trumps.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 08/10/2025 16:35

I like a mixture of red, pink, white and brown - gives you the sense of living dangerously, especially as you can never be sure how potent the brown ones (or the little pink ones that come in sacks from the shop round the corner) are going to be. Chuck in some leeks, shallots and spring onions too, if you like.

Wonderful vegetable family. Healthy and tasty.

FeralWoman · 08/10/2025 16:37

YANBU @NameChangeAgainAgainAgainAgain. It’s gross. I don’t understand why so many people apparently like raw onion in their food or why so many recipes include it. I’d be tasting it for days and it would probably irritate the crap out of my reflux.

BusWankers · 08/10/2025 16:38

Raw white onions, finely sliced are top notch on a burger.
