To not understand red onion

NameChangeAgainAgainAgainAgain · 08/10/2025 16:10

People eat it RAW?? Then you stink of it and taste it all day in your mouth and it repeats on you for hours.

I mean, why??? Is it WORTH IT? Would you eat a white onion raw? If not, why not? Oh yeah, because that would be INSANE

Like many others here, I eat both. I love raw onion. It doesn’t repeat on me.

Hate it raw, often have to remove it from salads when eating out.

I adore red onion and everyone gives it to from their salads when we’re out. I actually said to my husband recently that my perfect salad would be nothing but raw red onion.

ginasevern · 08/10/2025 17:24

I eat red and white onion raw, usually in salads or on top of something like nachos. But I prefer white onion personally. Red onion is milder.

dollyblue01 · 08/10/2025 17:26

I love raw onion both white and red , makes a good sandwich or burger.

YorkshireGoldDrinker · 08/10/2025 17:28

I like both red and white, but red doesn't like me very much. Bad gas 😳

Threebeelee · 08/10/2025 17:29

I knew someone who used to eat white onions like an apple. Literally peel and bite into it. 🤢

They were beyond reason. And so are you OP.

There’s a happy middle ground for a smidge of raw onion when it suits.

Calliopespa · 08/10/2025 17:33

I find it sweeter than white onion and less "alium-y."

I don't mind a little raw.

All onions, cooked so they are caramelised, are delicious.

Yes, smidge is exactly right. It gives things a kick.

Yesreallyitsme · 08/10/2025 17:36

YANBU. And it’s not even red.

NameChangeAgainAgainAgainAgain · 08/10/2025 17:40

Not surprised. Just very disappointed

And, of course, one should not forget 'Green Onions' by Booker T.and the M.G.'s

I never quite got that song - is green a natural variety of onion that I haven't yet come across, or are they only green when they've gone off?!

When my DS was tiny, he had a singing tea set that somebody gave him, which mercifully broke quite quickly. The teapot sang about how you should always match your tea and cake (also supplied) by colours. It warbled about blue cake and blue tea, which I can only assume would be prepared by leaving delicious fresh cake in the fridge for a month or two and then viciously and doggedly slow-boiling up a Smurf!

OnTheBoardwalk · 08/10/2025 17:40

YANBU red onions are awful and are now everywhere

where did they appear from, who asked for them and why are they in everything?

nasty things

FurForksSake · 08/10/2025 17:41

Green onions are spring onions or scallions.

BusyExpert · 08/10/2025 17:43

Red onions are milder and are very nice in salads. If a raw onion white or red is too strong for you then pour boiling water over the sliced onion and let steep for 2 or 3 minutes. This takes the harshness away but it remains firm enough for a salad.

I eat red and white onions raw. I don't get your post.

Same! Onions are delightful.

raw, fried, caramelised, cooked in soups, stews and sauces. Just lovely!😍

Ah, thank you - mystery solved!

I know they have the word 'onion' hidden there in plain sight, but I always think of them as a completely separate non-oniony food, if that makes any sense it doesn't!

Pollqueen · 08/10/2025 17:59

I'm not a huge fan of raw white onion, but quite like raw red onion. Raw onion is also pretty good for you

Blarn · 08/10/2025 18:00

Raw onion is terrible. I am a very tolerant person, I understand we all enjoy different things but a line needs to be drawn somewhere. My dc have decided they enjoy raw onion and I can't tell them, "no it is terrible" as they are my children but they are wrong about this and I have failed as a parent.

Unpaidviewer · 08/10/2025 18:01

I love raw onion. Red is sweeter but I will also eat white and spring onions. Garlic also stinks but I eat tons of that too. It tastes nice, its worth it.

ChocolateGreenTriangle · 08/10/2025 18:01

I love it. But I’ll only eat it if I’m at home and I’m not leaving the house again. I have morals 😂

ilovepixie · 08/10/2025 18:11

People eat white and red onion raw. I don’t understand this post!

tripleginandtonic · 08/10/2025 18:13

I eat raw onion red or white

JoeSikoraTommysStory · 08/10/2025 18:13

It’s disgusting 🤮 spring onion is the only raw onion anyone should be eating.

CurlewKate · 08/10/2025 19:06

Quick pickled red onion with a splash of balsamic in the vinegar is delicious! I don’t think many people like “big chunks”!
