To not understand red onion

NameChangeAgainAgainAgainAgain · 08/10/2025 16:10

People eat it RAW?? Then you stink of it and taste it all day in your mouth and it repeats on you for hours.

I mean, why??? Is it WORTH IT? Would you eat a white onion raw? If not, why not? Oh yeah, because that would be INSANE

Just to say, obviously people can eat what they like but it is just tossed in to everything and I cannot understand why anyone would do that

I feel similarly about gluten. But then I give myself a metaphorical kick up the backside and reason that it's only 140 million+ in the world who could agree with me.

XenoBitch · 08/10/2025 19:35

I love red onion. Actually I love all onions, and I do eat white onion raw. I am partial to a half inch thick slice in a bun. No cheese. Just a little butter and salt. Lovely!

Tagliateriroa · 08/10/2025 19:41

I totally agree. It’s one of the great mysteries of the world

LaurieFairyCake · 08/10/2025 20:02

This is going to BLOW YOUR MIND.

with red onion the BIGGER the piece (like a ring of it) the MILDER the flavour

all you people CHOPPING IT UP SMALL are making it STRONGER

this blew my mind when a chef told me that and it’s true

coxesorangepippin · 08/10/2025 20:11

😂

AC246 · 08/10/2025 20:11

I adore onions, red, white or green, especially raw.
I add them to everything.
Red onion is very good for you, raw and roasted.

Really?
I was confused when OP said red onion milder raw. When I have chopped it up (small) it can blow my head off.
This now makes sense.

Not surprised. Just very disappointed

Disappointed???

That's and odd choice of word when it's a matter of personal taste!

I love thinly sliced raw onion - Red and white - in lots of foods. Others don't but I'm certainly not disappointed by their different tastes!

BMW6 · 08/10/2025 20:19

My Dad used to eat raw white onions just like an apple.

LaurieFairyCake · 08/10/2025 20:34

xenobitch

yes, really. It’s amazing.

dontcrowdthemushrooms · 08/10/2025 20:48

Red onions are the superior onion. No place for white onions in my house!

NoisyMonster678 · 08/10/2025 21:14

When red onion is added to salad but was hiding under the lettuce and you you eat it by accident.

Then taste nothing else for the day.

Its ok it tiny amounts but not whole rings, I can't digest it raw any way.

Hankunamatata · 08/10/2025 21:17

Amazing in a Greek salad

UnaOfStormhold · 08/10/2025 21:21

With all alliums, the more you damage the cells the more flavour is released. So crushed garlic is more pungent than sliced garlic, and the same is true for onions.

DiscoBob · 08/10/2025 21:23

I love it in salads, it's essential to me in fact in one. I don't think it's any stronger than white or yellow onion. I love all onions and aliums, cooked and raw.

Plenty of people dislike onions in general, but I don't see why red ones should be singled out for particular vitriol.

gemdrop84 · 08/10/2025 21:26

Everyone has a preference either way.
I do eat onions raw, usually with cheese in a sandwich or with peppers and sweetcorn mixed in with tuna on jacket potatoes, yum!
All I can think of when reading your post is the Grinch eating an onion 🤣

Fibrous · 08/10/2025 21:28

i have to soak mine in milk for an hour or so and thoroughly rinse otherwise it gives me bad bloat. Or lightly pickle it. I used to be fine with it untreated but onion sensitivity seems to be a thing you can develop with age.

evtheria · 08/10/2025 21:34

I used to never eat any raw onions, but then had Greek salad with finely chopped red onion in it. Smooshing the bread in the leftover olive oil/tomato juice, with the oregano and crunchy bits of red onion… Spectacular. Makes a very good pickle too. I still don’t like the onion breath after, though.

Was he a champion onion yutter?? I think this (linked) might not be an event for @NameChangeAgainAgainAgainAgain , but some of the other posters on the thread should get themselves along!

Aliums. Mmmmmmm.

BedlingtonFloof · 08/10/2025 21:43

I can’t stand onion of any kind. It just totally overpowers all the other flavours in a dish for me. I hate the smell, the texture’s horrible and the taste is unpleasant too. Apparently this makes me very unusual, and it can make eating out difficult but I really hate onion.

NameChangeAgainAgainAgainAgain · 08/10/2025 22:45

@BMW6 disappointed that I did not find my people. You great hordes of onion chomping iron stomached women are in another league and I am here in my lonely bloated world of indigestion and horrible breath

It actually feels like it burns if I eat it

Maybe it's medical 😂

OP posts:
FurForksSake · 08/10/2025 22:46

Some people like the way it burns.

NameChangeAgainAgainAgainAgain · 08/10/2025 22:48

@NeverDropYourMooncup are there 140million ceoliacs? Is that a lot or not very many? Can't work out what you mean

OP posts:
MeganM3 · 08/10/2025 22:49

I love it cooked or raw. But it took me until I was about 32years old! Maybe tastes mature at different times
