To not understand red onion

NameChangeAgainAgainAgainAgain · 08/10/2025 16:10

People eat it RAW?? Then you stink of it and taste it all day in your mouth and it repeats on you for hours.

I mean, why??? Is it WORTH IT? Would you eat a white onion raw? If not, why not? Oh yeah, because that would be INSANE

YANBU @NameChangeAgainAgainAgainAgain. It’s gross. I don’t understand why so many people apparently like raw onion in their food or why so many recipes include it. I’d be tasting it for days and it would probably irritate the crap out of my reflux.

Surely you can go understand that people like to eat different things. Your delicious is someone's disgusting.

landlordhell · 08/10/2025 16:39

I eat both raw. Only a few pieces in a salad for example. If eaten with other foods it’s doesn’t really affect my breath. I wouldn’t eat it before a date but I’ve been married 29 years so we’re past that!

AllyCart · 08/10/2025 16:41

When people say "white onion" are they meaning brown skinned onions or actual white skinned onions?

splim · 08/10/2025 16:43

Soaking it for a few mins in cold water, or preferably some diluted vinegar, or put a small amount in a MN massive salad.

I prefer them well cooked & caramelised though.

Cappuccino5 · 08/10/2025 16:43

YANBU OP! Raw onions in any form kill me. Even when cooked red onion has an awfully harsh taste. Nicely caramelised white onions or shallots on the other hand.. delicious!

Justlovedogs · 08/10/2025 16:45

I don't eat any onion raw, but my late DH used to eat white onion raw. Wouldn't eat red as he didn't like the flavour. Shock and surprise, OP - different people like different things 🤷‍♀️

Frogs88 · 08/10/2025 16:46

I would eat a white onion raw as well…

Curiossir · 08/10/2025 16:47

Cheese and onion rolls with huge chunks of both. Amazing.

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 08/10/2025 16:47

Because it tastes of lovely.

maddiemookins16mum · 08/10/2025 16:52

I love raw onion.

MsWilmottsGhost · 08/10/2025 16:53

YANBU OP.

Perhaps there are supertasters for onion though? So many PP are saying it doesn't taste strong. Well it certainly does to me!

I guess most people must have the less sensitive taste buds, how else to explain why so many restaurants put it in salads?

Bleurrgh, I have to pick it all out 🤮

I eat both raw. Slices/rings. Not just chew it down like an apple. Had a blt for lunch today with onion in it to add a bit of oomph.

Edited

Cheddar and raw white onion sandwiches are delightful too

Talipesmum · 08/10/2025 16:54

I love it cooked but I really don’t like it when salads have bits of red onion running through them. Especially when it’s all chopped up small and you can’t pick it out. It is so strong tasting and lingers for so long. I don’t know why it bothers me more than other things - totally fine with strong garlic, kimchi, spices etc - it’s just the lurking red onion. The salads at my work sometimes have it and sometimes don’t - and when it’s there it’s mixed into everything, all the options. I think there’s a red onion lover who just thinks we all like it and they’re WRONG! The salad bar is a total mix and match thing so why they can’t just have it on the side next to the big tub of grated carrot and the big tub of lettuce I don’t know. Pah.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 08/10/2025 16:55

Love raw onion of any colour. In fact, I've just eaten a chopped shallot.

They add a little bit of savoury substance to otherwise bland food. A salad is not complete without chopped onion.

But then I have a cast iron digestive system and could probably digest sheet metal if someone gave it to me. Others opinions might differ.

Comtesse · 08/10/2025 16:58

A little bit of chopped red onion in a tuna mayo sandwich is lovely.

Baninarama · 08/10/2025 16:59

Raw big onion of any shade or hue has no place in a salad. Spring onions are an entirely different animal, however, as are chives. They can stay.

Catwalking · 08/10/2025 17:00

yeh & pickled onion!
but… try very thin sliced pink onion with tiny bit salt sprinkled over & covered in lemon juice, leave about 1/2hr. makes lovely fresh ‘pickle’, for curries.

InterIgnis · 08/10/2025 17:01

“Would you eat a white onion raw?”

Yes, I do. Yellow onion too.

GingerPaste · 08/10/2025 17:02

I love raw red onions too (in a salad)!

Sacrilege. There’s no shopska or srpska salad without raw onion, and that is no world to live in!

KillMeMounjaro · 08/10/2025 17:05

We eat red, white and brown onions raw. A lot! We love them. DH more than me, and he's kinda whiffy. I suppose I must be too 🤷🏻‍♀️

ReadingSoManyThreads · 08/10/2025 17:07

I eat white onions raw on top of a beef burger. But I cannot abide red onions, even the smell - boke.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 08/10/2025 17:07

Oh ffs.

I don’t know how some people go through life so offended by very everything they can smell.

BertieBotts · 08/10/2025 17:11

I would eat both raw - but red onion is nicer raw because it's sweeter.

NameChangeAgainAgainAgainAgain · 08/10/2025 17:20

Just to say, obviously people can eat what they like but it is just tossed in to everything and I cannot understand why anyone would do that
