Thread 18: To feel disappointed after reading this in The Observer about the author and her husband from The Salt Path book and film?

Hello all. I've simplified the opening post as I don't think we need to keep reposting all the links, timelines and so on at this stage of proceedings.

The Observer's original exposé: The real Salt Path: how a blockbuster book and film were ...
First thread: To feel disappointed after reading this in The Observer about the author and her husband from The Salt Path book and film? | Mumsnet
Links to threads 2-16, the other 20 Observer articles and videos to date, Raynor Winn/Sally Walker's statement, our timeline and sources can all be accessed in the OP and first few posts of Thread 17: https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/5403285-thread-17-to-feel-disappointed-after-reading-this-in-the-observer-about-the-author-and-her-husband-from-the-salt-path-book-and-film?

New posters joining us in the genuine spirit of our civil discourse are welcome. It would be helpful to get the background from at least some of the Observer exposé items before posting.
To all - Please be extremely cautious when it comes to naming or implicating people and addresses not in the public eye or with no direct connection to the story, and around the understandable health speculations, especially where details are unclear or still emerging. Remember, even Hollywood rabbits attract the odd flea. Please do not engage with drive-by scolders who seem to have their own agenda and seek to derail. Avoid @'ing and quoting them as - from experience - this will only encourage them back to the threads. We have done amazingly well together for 17 very interesting, very serious and very silly threads so far. I can't be here as much as I'd like so all help with keeping our discussion walking along in our usual reasonable and respectful fashion is very welcome.

Now three months in, if these threads could wear slogan t-shirts they would be Mark Twain's often misquoted 'The report of my death was an exaggeration'. Applications in writing from correspondents seeking supply parcels of fudge and cider will be tolerated.

Here we are again
Disappointed as can be
All good pals and jolly good company
Strolling round the path
Happy on a spree
All good pals and jolly good company

Never mind the weather, never mind the rain
Now that we're together, whoops we go again!
Whoops, we go again
La-di-da-di-da, la-di-da-di-dee
All good pals and jolly good company

Keep to the path. No saltiness. May the fudge and cider be with you.

Here with fudge, cider and curative alcholic drafts for the sick!

Actually, if anyone has any cures for insomnia (it's apparently A Sepsis Thing) I'm all ears. I've been prescribed Zopiclone but would rather not take if poss.

Words · 05/10/2025 19:36

Hello @Uricon2 . Herbal nytol liquid in the green box. Not the tablets. They do bugger all. You can get it from Amazon.

Am not a herbal person at all but this works for me like a treat, though it can take a while ( 1 hr plus) to kick in. It's basically valerian and a tiny hint of alcohol.

You can also get a stronger version which I think is anti histamine based. That's locked away in the Cabinet of Scary Things at my chemist.

Have you ever done yoga nidra? It never fails for me.

Failing that, whisky, but the yoga nidra will leave you feeling fresher in the morning.

Reporting for duty!

Freshsocks · 05/10/2025 20:12

I made it, a little worse for ware, thank you @DisappointedReader for saving me a seat :)

BeguiledBrandy · 05/10/2025 20:22

Yompers.

I go out for the afternoon, between Polperro and Polruan, and when I get back you're way ahead of me, again. Merged my former names - got rid of references to Path and Silence.

Skipped through and haven't found out what's in the Gulf news or what you've all been saying .... good to be here anyway.

Dear all - public service announcement:
There are journalists circling our good ship and contacting some of us via PM, so please be wary. I understand that they are not making contact on behalf of Our Chloe. Personally my loyalties are with Our Chloe after all her hard work and I respect her integrity. I understand that she has not finished yet and I would like to support her in continuing what she started. I see it as her story to tell. Thank you to those of you who have sent me PMs about this. It's also not the done thing on Mumsnet for journalists to contact members directly like this as it tends to annoy or upset people. We have a Media Requests board for a reason.

Hwaet me hearties! Should probably change my name and my correspondent assignment now the cricket season is over - but meanwhile here I am, pursuing the not-yet-cold trail of the Salt Path (with all the tenacity of a fictional detective whose author needs to keep writing new whodunnits for the fans...)

Whoops, nearly missed the charabanc, as usual (mostly because spellchecker wanted me to catch the caravan, despite by insistance otherwise).

Depends if you have wide awake insomnia or the slightly sleepy but can't quite drop off sort. If it's the second, I usually listen to an audio book (Borrowbox is free and run by libraries). Just don't pick anything by RW or you'll get too wound up to sleep. 🛌

Just to say that I’m so sorry to hear that some of you are very unwell and I hope you get better soon. My daughter has come down with a sore throat, blocked head and a temperature today and my mother has been ill for over a week with a throat virus.

There are a few observations I have made since that last article was posted in the previous thread… one of you had the exact same thought (I can’t remember who now). I’ll have to have a look back to refresh my memory before posting again.

@BeguiledBrandy I love your new name and don’t blame you for not wanting to reference the titles of those books any more!

I’ve just realised I’ve accidentally posted with my new name. My original name on here was Fandango52, but forgot to post with that this time - sorry!

mauvishagain · 05/10/2025 22:37

Well I have been lurking instead of typing for a while but am happy to see you all again, albeit in various states of illhealth (get well soon to all who need to!)

Prompted by something on the penultimate page of the previous thread,I just revisited SW's statement on her RW.co.uk page. On rereading it, I am absolutely certain that she has rewritten the section about Moth's health. It reads as a veiled confirmation that he has CBS, not CBD; and she now states specifically that his illness is indolent.

In other words, he's not about to die before Xmas after all. Well, I think we had guessed that.

She also states that the diagnosis comes from building a picture of symptoms; it's not made by a "single test". I'm reminded though that a LOT of credence is given by her to a single test - that scan of Moth's head, lit up like a forest of Xmas trees, that has magically reverted to normal.

KettleSmocks · 05/10/2025 22:39

I am sharing a bed of ill health and ire, tempered by medicinal alcohol, with @Vroomfondleswaistcoat — I was Pissenlit on the last thread, but even though it’s just French for dandelion, and I was looking at a dandelion in a friend’s garden in Paris whenever I last namechanged, seeing the word ‘piss’ all the time got depressing after a while. I’m still barking with a cough, though.

No journalist has contacted me. I’m feeling slightly left out. Maybe I come across as the Wrong Type.

PullTheBricksDown · 05/10/2025 22:48

Sceptical First Time Reader checking in here. I am on a research sabbatical until (if?) OWH is released, but still following the path though with too many work distractions. Should have taken the WinnWalkers' Way, where work is for other people.

@KettleSmocks I've had nothing either. We're either too salty or not salty enough 🤔

@Uricon2 I do similar to @RainyTuesdaysAndSunnyWednesdays in that I put on a film I know really well and watch that, then let my eyes close and just listen to the dialogue. 🤞you find a fix for it.

LetsBeSensible · 05/10/2025 22:58

Regarding “transference” and SalRay’s very rich rebuttal.
In my experience, the rebuttal statement was a classic “dark triad personality disorder” statement.
It accuses people of saying Moth faked illness - false opposition, nobody said that outright, just that he didn’t seem to ever be given a terminal diagnosis. Not quite the same thing, allows SalRay to silence dissent by lumping all dissenting voices in with the “you faked illness” brigade.

It accuses people of removing hope from the truly ill- SalRay rewrites history to say it turned out Moth has the rare indolent non-terminal version (of this aggressive terminal illness) and the fact that some of their number might have it easier, if not themselves, gave hope to CBD sufferers. Again, dissenters are lumped in with tearing down the hopes of the terminally ill. Who is SalRay to speak for the CBD community? How would she know? Well she doesn’t, but she’s an arch manipulator.

The final classic move is that everything is just a “bit off” and you’re supposed to accept at face value that she’s right and the dissenters are bad people who say terrible things. Unless you are a Bad Person too? if you go to the bother of fact checking and unravelling it, writing counterpoints using things like facts and recorded interviews of SalRay making opposite statements, you seem obsessed/unduly hateful/driven by spite and clearly you’re the problem. Not poor dear upset SalRay, or that like she’s married to who might be ill.

The most important thing is that, like a previous indefatigable poster tried really hard to do, is for you, dear reader, to feel sorry for SalRay. The poor thing. Imagine what this is doing to her. Only a Bad Person would continue to cause upset to SalRay.

If you have seen these people in action before, you’ll recognise this behaviour. If it’s your first time, it’s wild! Yes, they walk among us. Yes, they just rattle this stuff off the top of their heads. No, they apparently don’t feel ashamed. It’s not normal. It’s very disordered.

After checking, it is what she originally wrote in the statement. I saved it when it first published.

crossedlines · 05/10/2025 23:42

@LetsBeSensibleinteresting…. I suppose SalRay could actually have a personality disorder (will she go off and get a diagnosis? There could be another book in that!) I think though, it’s just as likely that she’s just a deceitful person with a massive chip on her shoulder.

mauvishagain · 05/10/2025 23:44

@SimoArmo really? I'm surprised, but I'm working from memory so obviously, if you've got screenshots or similar of the original, then I accept that Mistakes were Made in my post!

Ellmau · 05/10/2025 23:48

I think I missed the last thread altogether hope I haven't missed anything significant.
