Thread 18: To feel disappointed after reading this in The Observer about the author and her husband from The Salt Path book and film?

Hello all. I've simplified the opening post as I don't think we need to keep reposting all the links, timelines and so on at this stage of proceedings.

The Observer's original exposé: The real Salt Path: how a blockbuster book and film were ...
First thread: To feel disappointed after reading this in The Observer about the author and her husband from The Salt Path book and film? | Mumsnet
Links to threads 2-16, the other 20 Observer articles and videos to date, Raynor Winn/Sally Walker's statement, our timeline and sources can all be accessed in the OP and first few posts of Thread 17: https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/5403285-thread-17-to-feel-disappointed-after-reading-this-in-the-observer-about-the-author-and-her-husband-from-the-salt-path-book-and-film?

New posters joining us in the genuine spirit of our civil discourse are welcome. It would be helpful to get the background from at least some of the Observer exposé items before posting.
To all - Please be extremely cautious when it comes to naming or implicating people and addresses not in the public eye or with no direct connection to the story, and around the understandable health speculations, especially where details are unclear or still emerging. Remember, even Hollywood rabbits attract the odd flea. Please do not engage with drive-by scolders who seem to have their own agenda and seek to derail. Avoid @'ing and quoting them as - from experience - this will only encourage them back to the threads. We have done amazingly well together for 17 very interesting, very serious and very silly threads so far. I can't be here as much as I'd like so all help with keeping our discussion walking along in our usual reasonable and respectful fashion is very welcome.

Now three months in, if these threads could wear slogan t-shirts they would be Mark Twain's often misquoted 'The report of my death was an exaggeration'. Applications in writing from correspondents seeking supply parcels of fudge and cider will be tolerated.

Here we are again
Disappointed as can be
All good pals and jolly good company
Strolling round the path
Happy on a spree
All good pals and jolly good company

Never mind the weather, never mind the rain
Now that we're together, whoops we go again!
Whoops, we go again
La-di-da-di-da, la-di-da-di-dee
All good pals and jolly good company

Keep to the path. No saltiness. May the fudge and cider be with you.

Any chance that Ray and Moth are turned into fictional characters (which they kind of are already)? The possibilities could be endless:

" Ray and Moth embark on the King Charles III English Coastal Path
" Moth is diagnosed with a new life threatening illness
" Ray and Moth discover religion and set up a cult
" Ray and Moth reconnect with their eco warrior roots and join a Just Stop Oil protest group and spend time in prison
" Grant, the blind mystic of Culbone church, the tortoise walker of Lantic Bay, and the campsite attendant at Treen all make cameo appearances
" Ray enters politics and becomes a Green Party MP
" Ray and Moth discover that Dave and Julie are not whom they seem....
" Ray and Moth re embark on The Salt Path for one final hurrah.

"Ray and Moth jTeam Up With Satah Ferguson for More Kindmess Along The Way"

I’m seeing a series of comic books or a series of “Comic Strip presents” short films. It’s a pity Rik Mayall is no longer alive, I can visualise him playing the very fictional part of the dog owner who grins and dribbles evilly while Fido takes a leak over their tent and then shouts and swears at them when they emerge from within.

HatStickBoots · 02/11/2025 08:54

Moth: “Stick a fork in me Ray, I’m done. I can’t keep going on any more…. I don’t think I’m going to make it to 2075!”
Ray: “Shut up!! Stop talking like that!!! We’ll walk to Korea! Get some of those nano-thingies into you!!”

Hell, I think Rik Mayall would have made a fabulous Tim!
'Well, here we are, it's Tueday the 24th of May and we're at Land's End at last!'
'Shut UP Tim! It's really November and we're just setting out!'
'Oh, yes, sorry, forgetting the narrative there for a moment... Yes, it's November and we're half way through our...'
'Shut UP, Tim!'

By the way, what is tablet?

Like fudge but harder and always crumbly as opposed to smooth. I'm not keen on smooth fudge so love this!

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 02/11/2025 09:33

RainyTuesdaysAndSunnyWednesdays · 01/11/2025 21:34

Seen tablet mentioned before- what is it? Am I missing a delicacy? But maybe I am better off not knowing, too many calories being consumed already, anyone would think I was about to hibernate!

Tablet tastes like the really good fudge you can buy or make at home - it's crumbly and sweet and buttery. It's not like the fudge you get nowadays that's chewy and tastes of nothing.

It is also severely addictive and if anyone tries to lay their hands on my supply, I might have to be put off the charabanc for Unruly Behaviour.

HatStickBoots · 02/11/2025 11:00

Oooh I love that sort of crumbly fudge! Roly’s fudge comes in slabs which get crumbled off into a bag. My son likes to buy me some for Christmas and it’s basically soft brown sugar and butter 😋

I think Rik could have had multiple roles in this spoof. Robbie Coltrane too.
I just had a vision of Sal with lots of different heads like Worzel Gummidge.

Edit: My phone exchanged Roly’s for Rocky’s! 😱

Uricon2 · 02/11/2025 11:15

@HatStickBoots I had never heard of Roly's fudge. They have now been added to my 'Christmas suppliers list' for order nearer the time.

I thank you!

I'm loving the Rik Mayall (bless him) multiple roles idea and pretty sure we could find something for Ade Edmondson too. Jennifer Saunders as various snooty ladies who encounter the Desperate Duo perhaps?

Innermagnolia · 02/11/2025 12:14

@HatStickBoots it is an exercise of my willpower to get past Roly’s on the High Street. Especially as it is on a hill and I could almost justify the need for fuel to get to the top. There are times when I have to succumb because the smell of hot freshly made fudge is irresistible.
@Vroomfondleswaistcoat I grew up on delicious tablet, thanks to my beautiful Scottish grandmother who was a dab hand at it. It is a wonder my teeth survived really!

Cornishwafer · 02/11/2025 13:47

Apologies if it's already been mentioned, but im pleased to see that Sky are due to broadcast a documentary about 'the real salt path' in December.

Uricon2 · 02/11/2025 14:07

I'm getting a distinct 'Dennis Potter/ The Comic Strip Presents ' mashup vibe to all this. It could be massive! Grin

Any hop-on roles for the rabbits (on loan from Pets At Home in the film)?

In a reversal of fortune, SalRay could develop an illness* and Mothtim becomes the carer and writer.

This film review may have been shared already. It expresses some misgivings about the story,

There are those that think that Moth is a puppet and his image is carefully curated.

Hmm. What could have given them that idea?

Now then. Let's keep to The Path. The Royal Family topic is that way. >>>

PS Is that you Fergie?

In Fudge news, we recently received a gift of Copperpot's All Butter Fudge. It has won Great Taste and Taste of the West Gold awards. It didn't last long.

The fudge sounds delicious @DisappointedReader, glad I haven't missed the charabanc, got a lift for the last bit in a little tartan van, I gave the driver the last of my fudge and he gave me a box of something called tablet? I'm going to pop it in my knapsack before I board :) Catching up on all your posts, I am chuckling away :)

TonstantWeader · 02/11/2025 20:27

<lobs rucksack through charabanc window, swings self up, settles into seat>

I offer Richard E Grant alongside Rik Mayall (yes, excellent choice) for the role of Grant, with Billie Piper as one of the massaging beauties.

HatStickBoots · 02/11/2025 22:12

It’s probably too late to mention that I’m not really sure what a charabanc is… (I’ll look it up) … but it seems to be spinning its wheels in some mud right now .. careful Fergie and Meg! Right, we’ve got Rik, Richard, cardboard Simon and a very pristine looking expensively attired Moth who has shed the hippie eco threads like a cocoon and is resembling Captain Sensible more and more by the day.

HatStickBoots · 02/11/2025 22:13

🤣🤩 I love this charabanc!!

I've got spiced cider as my preferred tipple.
