Neighbour has put up huge Unite the Kingdom flag

I am gutted. I haven't seen a single flag in my town, and suddenly this union jack goes up two doors over with the words 'Unite the Kingdom' printed on it in capital letters. The flag is huge and flying from a pole on top of their shed, but it's in their own garden so nothing can be done.

I am the daughter of an immigrant mother and therefore mixed race. Now I have to see this fucking flag waving at me every time I look out of my kitchen or living room windows.

I'd go over and say, "Am I part of the kingdom you want to unite? Is there anyone currently in the kingdom that you don't want to unite?"

And unless the answers are respectively 'yes' and 'no', I'd put up my own flag saying, 'Unite the Kingdom, except the bloke at number 27 and a few others (list available on request)'

Centuriesahead · 05/10/2025 15:12

Do you know them?

Centuriesahead · 05/10/2025 15:13

I am the daughter of an immigrant mother and therefore mixed race.

Why “therefore”? My husband is the son of an immigrant mother and he’s not mixed race

MidnightPatrol · 05/10/2025 15:13

What’s the offence with ‘unite the kingdom’ written on a Union Jack?

UrticaDioca · 05/10/2025 15:13

I've not met them but I see them in their garden and going in and out of their shed/outhouse.

Sorry, good point. That's my mistake.

I would interpret Unite the Kingdom as anti racist and in opposition to the St George flag epidemic.

Centuriesahead · 05/10/2025 15:14

So are you mixed race?

sorry not clear

SpiritAdder · 05/10/2025 15:15

Go and talk to them. I’m American so don’t know specifics, but I read that the union jack 🇬🇧 was being put up by anti-racism activists to counter the Tommy Robinson/Reform racists that have been using the English flag 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 as a message that England is for the English only and anyone not of Anglo ethnicity can fuck off out of the country. They might be an ally. I’d want to know in your shoes.

BitOutOfPractice · 05/10/2025 15:15

Oh god op I would NOT be happy with that. I would immediately make assumptions about them. None of them favourable.

Amandasummers · 05/10/2025 15:16

Is it just me or does “now I have to see this fucking flag” some sort of insinuation that you find the flag insulting? You literally live here? Why the offence?

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 05/10/2025 15:17

I'm sorry, OP. It's shit, but there isn't really anything you can do when people are flying flags on their own property.

I do still believe that the majority of people in this country reject this racist shit. And even some who don't actually reject it are just too stupid to know any better.

TheFoodLife · 05/10/2025 15:17

I believe the usual MN response to judging other people is along the lines of

“maybe just mind your own business”.

Here we go with the gaslighting. Right on schedule.

Is flying a Union Jack racist now?

What’s the origin of the statement ‘unite the kingdom’?

It's just you.

Most people know that "unite the kingdom" reflects support for a racist campaign led by Tommy Robinson and his cronies.

No, it's Tommy Robinson's campaign.

Yes I'm mixed race, I am visibly not white.

There have and always will be racist pricks in this world, sadly. They will jump on any bandwagon going and hijack it - unfortunately

Maybe I’m being naive and ignorant, but I thought the whole flag thing was brought about regarding uncontrolled migration (especially by boat) not as a racist statement. Yet time and time again, I see people connecting the dots and immediately assuming the worst
Perhaps I’m wrong?

It's a Tommy Robinson slogan. Hence it is racist.

Centuriesahead · 05/10/2025 15:20

Have you had any trouble from them in the past? Any whiff that they’re racists dicks?

Tbh I wouldn't have a problem if it was just the union jack. But it has the words 'Unite the Kingdom' emblazoned across it. It's a far right campaign.

It is indeed. Despite the significant number of posters who seem eager to deny this or feign ignorance.

Anyone who chooses to support the campaign is aligning themselves with the racist Tommy Robinson.

Yeah, both my parents are immigrants but I'm the same race as them, which is white.

Britishness isn't a race.
