Neighbour has put up huge Unite the Kingdom flag

I am gutted. I haven't seen a single flag in my town, and suddenly this union jack goes up two doors over with the words 'Unite the Kingdom' printed on it in capital letters. The flag is huge and flying from a pole on top of their shed, but it's in their own garden so nothing can be done.

I am the daughter of an immigrant mother and therefore mixed race. Now I have to see this fucking flag waving at me every time I look out of my kitchen or living room windows.

Personally it would make me think that my neighbour is a racist idiot and a big, fat neon finger would be pointing at him and no-one else.

saveforthat · 05/10/2025 15:39

I've never seen a flag with Unite the kingdom on it but it could be taken as let's everyone in the UK unite, including immigrants. Why assume it means the opposite?

EchoedSilence · 05/10/2025 15:40

Centuriesahead · 05/10/2025 15:36

Op why aren’t you able to confirm whether you’ve ever had any engagement with them or got a whiff they are racist before now?

The flag is a bit of a giveaway.

BitOutOfPractice · 05/10/2025 15:40

SpiritAdder · 05/10/2025 15:34

Thanks for that. I’ll remember to say the same to you if you ever don’t know exactly what is going on in my country.

“My country”? What do you mean by that? I’m maybe being a bit dim but I really don’t understand what you mean. What is “going on” in your country. I don’t even know where you live!

AmyDuPlantier · 05/10/2025 15:40

WalkDontWalk · 05/10/2025 15:11

I'd go over and say, "Am I part of the kingdom you want to unite? Is there anyone currently in the kingdom that you don't want to unite?"

And unless the answers are respectively 'yes' and 'no', I'd put up my own flag saying, 'Unite the Kingdom, except the bloke at number 27 and a few others (list available on request)'

Edited

Sure you would

She has. She says she doesn’t know them.

I’m American so I live in the USA. I did say my nationality when I posted.

Tbh, the flags on people's houses are quite useful. It is good to know where the racists live.

ScribblingPixie · 05/10/2025 15:42

EchoedSilence · 05/10/2025 15:39

I doubt my neighbours are racist considering both sides are muslim.I live in one of those very diverse areas that some MNers think are no go areas.

Are you seriously suggesting that no Muslim people hold racist views?

Centuriesahead · 05/10/2025 15:42

BitOutOfPractice · 05/10/2025 15:41

She has. She says she doesn’t know them.

That is not confirming whether she has ever got a whiff from them that they are racist, does it

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 05/10/2025 15:35

Great, how much do you bet?

Because I would be happy to point you to other threads where I have stated quite clearly that I think the protests should have been called off this weekend in solidarity with the Jewish community.

You can carry on making all the assumptions that you like, but some of us are as horrified by antisemitism as we are by any other form of racism.

Now, about that bet...

Oh I see so you only think all that should stop for 2 days and the Jewish community should suck it up the rest of the time.

Is it just me or does “now I have to see this fucking flag” some sort of insinuation that you find the flag insulting? You literally live here? Why the offence?

I would love if it were just you but sadly it's not

Oh sorry. I wasn’t referring to you when I spoke about disingenuous people. I was talking about people in the uk who pretend to believe that this current flag campaign isn’t racist. Sorry I didn’t mean you!

He has his views. You have yours. He’s entitled to hang flags if he wants to. You’re entitled not to hang flags,

I’d just ignore it. 🤷‍♀️

I’ve never heard of this expression in relation to Tommy Robinson until this thread TBF.

Fair enough, I guess it might pass you by if you don't read/watch the news or keep up with current affairs. I think most people are probably aware of it though.

And I think anyone who was thinking of flying a flag with a particular slogan would at least take a minute to Google what that slogan was associated with before deciding to put it up. So I think it's safe to assume that those who choose to promote that particular message are fully aligned with the Tommy Robinson campaign.

I've not met them but I see them in their garden and going in and out of their shed/outhouse.

Ok are you new in the area.
Are they new in the area.
How do generally get along with everyone else as I see you haven’t yet had the opportunity to pass the time of day with these neighbours yet.
I bet they didn’t even think you would find offence as it’s a general feeling in the country not at you personally.

How the hell would she get a whiff of racism if she doesn’t know them? From how they look?

So you’re angry at a British flag being flown in Britain?! Really?

lovernotafighterr · 05/10/2025 15:51

What does Unite the Kingdom mean? I haven’t seen this before on a flag.

I live in a flag free street luckily. I would worry if someone started to put them up because I am planning to move soon and I think it would affect property prices. Personally would not want to move in anywhere with lots of flags as I would immediately think it was a by downmarket with not very bright people living there.

SpiritAdder · 05/10/2025 15:51

IsEveryUserNameBloodyTaken · 05/10/2025 15:42

Oh I see so you only think all that should stop for 2 days and the Jewish community should suck it up the rest of the time.

You think that Palestinian-British should suck up dozens of their people dying every day, including women and children ?

A Sussex mosque was set on fire with people inside it last night in an arson attack. The second attack in 3 days.

No one is even thinking of asking for protests to be suspended.

meadster · 05/10/2025 15:51

I'm sorry that's made you feel sad OP. I'm sure you know that most people just view those flags as an easy way to identify the racist idiots.

Whenever I see a "Unite the Kingdom" flag I want to add the words "by showing tolerance and respect towards others" underneath. I'm hoping it's a short-lived thing. Maybe by Christmas your neighbours will have replaced it with a great big flashing snowman!

Well obviously OP has to ignore it, there is no other action she can take really. But it’s still annoying, that would tick me off so much to have to look at that on a regular basis. I’m not surprised OP is annoyed/ disappointed about it.

Boundaries of land/nations are man made. We all come from the same pool. Some have different looks/customs/food/values. Humans are all mixed together, just look at your and other peoples genes. We are all the same just a different mix. Accept everyone you come in contact with for who they are as individuals. No borders for me.
